# Account-based marketing: a practical guide, from target list to named contacts

ABM means working a short list of accounts as if each were its own market. Here are the three types, the five steps, how account-based sales differs, and which statistics you can trust.

By Enrich.chat Editorial. Updated October 16, 2026.

**Short answer:** Account-based marketing (ABM) is a B2B approach where marketing and sales pick a short list of target accounts, find the buying group at each, and run coordinated campaigns for those accounts only. [Demandbase](https://www.demandbase.com/faq/account-based-marketing-101/) describes three types: one-to-one, one-to-few and one-to-many. Work in five steps: choose accounts, map the buying group, personalize, coordinate channels and measure by account.

## Key takeaways

- ABM comes in three types, and sources disagree on their size. Demandbase puts one-to-few at clusters of 5 to 15 accounts, while Factors.ai says 50 to 200.
- Buying groups are large. Forrester (January 2026) reports 13 internal stakeholders and nine external influencers in a typical decision, and procurement decides in 53% of buying cycles.
- Gartner's survey of 632 buyers (2024) found content tailored to the whole buying group raised consensus by 20%, while content aimed at one person's relevance had a 59% negative impact.
- Many ABM statistics online name no study. Forrester's 2024 survey, as reported by CRM Magazine, found the top challenges were too little staff (37%) and budget (35%).
- Enrich.chat covers the contact-data step: account websites in, buying-group titles from /v1/search, work emails with a status from /v1/person. It has no intent data, ad platform or CRM app.

## What is account-based marketing (ABM)?

Account-based marketing (ABM) is a B2B strategy where marketing and sales choose a defined set of high-value accounts and run coordinated campaigns for those accounts, instead of for a wide audience. [Demandbase](https://www.demandbase.com/faq/account-based-marketing-101/) describes it as flipping the usual B2B funnel: you start from the accounts, then organize marketing, sales and advertising around them. [Salesforce](https://www.salesforce.com/marketing/account-based-marketing-guide/) treats each key account as its own market, a "market of one." Even [Salsify's short glossary entry](https://www.salsify.com/glossary/account-based-marketing-abm-meaning) puts marketing and sales collaboration at the center.

ABM is a strategy, not software. Salesforce says products support it but it is not a product itself, and that it should complement lead generation, not replace it. [LinkedIn's guide](https://www.linkedin.com/business/marketing/blog/abm/what-is-account-based-marketing-10-definitions-from-the-experts) adds that ABM and inbound work together, because inbound content can bring in an account your target list missed.

|  | Lead-based marketing | Account-based marketing |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Starting point | A wide audience that forms and content pull in | A named list of accounts |
| Unit you count | Leads | Accounts |
| Who agrees the targets | Mostly marketing | Sales and marketing together |
| Success measures | Form fills, leads, lead quality | Engaged accounts, pipeline, revenue |

The shift shows up in what you count. Demandbase says successful programs move from lead-based metrics to account-centric ones such as engaged accounts, pipeline and revenue. LinkedIn's guide says sales and marketing must agree on goals, messaging, execution and metrics before launch.

## What are the three types of ABM, and how many accounts does each cover?

ABM comes in three types: one-to-one, one-to-few and one-to-many. They differ in how much custom work each account gets. [LinkedIn's guide](https://www.linkedin.com/business/marketing/blog/abm/what-is-account-based-marketing-10-definitions-from-the-experts) credits ITSMA with pioneering ABM in the 2000s and names its three approaches strategic, lite and programmatic. [Demandbase](https://www.demandbase.com/faq/account-based-marketing-101/) uses the one-to-one, one-to-few and one-to-many labels.

| Type | What each account gets | Size, by source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| One-to-one, also called strategic ABM | A dedicated senior marketer partners with the account team on a custom program for one account (Demandbase) | About 10 to 50 accounts ([Factors.ai](https://www.factors.ai/blog/what-is-account-based-marketing-abm)). HubSpot tier 1: 20 to 50 |
| One-to-few, also called ABM lite | A shared program for a cluster of accounts with similar issues or one industry (Demandbase) | 5 to 15 per cluster (Demandbase). 50 to 200 (Factors.ai). HubSpot tier 2: about 200 |
| One-to-many, also called programmatic ABM | Personalization at scale for hundreds of named accounts, supported by technology (Demandbase) | 200 or more (Factors.ai) |

The counts do not agree. For one-to-few, Demandbase means clusters of 5 to 15 accounts and Factors.ai means 50 to 200 (Figure 1). [HubSpot's account-based sales guide](https://blog.hubspot.com/sales/account-based-sales) uses tiers instead: about 20 to 50 accounts in the first tier and about 200 in the second. Size the tiers to your team, not to a label. Our rule of thumb is to count how many accounts one marketer can research well in a quarter, and cap the one-to-one tier there.

**Figure 1: How many accounts each ABM tier holds, by source.** A range chart on a scale of 0 to 250 accounts. Factors.ai puts one-to-one at about 10 to 50 accounts and HubSpot puts its first tier at 20 to 50. Demandbase puts one-to-few at 5 to 15 accounts per cluster, while Factors.ai puts it at 50 to 200. HubSpot puts its second tier at about 200. Factors.ai puts one-to-many at 200 or more.

*Sources disagree on tier size. The two orange bars are both called one-to-few. Ranges are from [Demandbase](https://www.demandbase.com/faq/account-based-marketing-101/), [Factors.ai](https://www.factors.ai/blog/what-is-account-based-marketing-abm) and [HubSpot](https://blog.hubspot.com/sales/account-based-sales). HubSpot's second tier is "approximately 200," drawn as a dot. Factors.ai's one-to-many is "200+," drawn open-ended.*

Blend the types. Demandbase says high-performing companies mix all three: one-to-many for a broad set of prospects, one-to-few for mid-tier accounts, and one-to-one for critical strategic customers. It adds that few companies can afford true one-to-one ABM for more than a handful of critical accounts.

## How do you run account-based marketing in five steps?

Run ABM in five steps: choose the accounts, map the buying group, personalize, coordinate the channels and measure by account. Figure 2 shows each step and the data it needs. We condensed the steps from the processes in [Demandbase's six steps](https://www.demandbase.com/faq/account-based-marketing-101/), [Salesforce's four](https://www.salesforce.com/marketing/account-based-marketing-guide/) and [LinkedIn's seven](https://www.linkedin.com/business/marketing/blog/abm/what-is-account-based-marketing-10-definitions-from-the-experts), to fit a small team.

**Figure 2: The five ABM steps and the contact data each needs.** Five stacked steps. One, choose accounts, needs your ideal customer profile, tiers and one website per account, and uses GET /v1/company. Two, map the buying group, needs names, titles and LinkedIn URLs, and uses GET /v1/search. Three, personalize, needs role, industry and the tools an account runs, and uses GET /v1/company/tech. Four, coordinate channels, needs work emails, an ad list and sales calls, and uses GET /v1/person. Five, measure, needs engaged accounts, pipeline and revenue, and is not covered by Enrich.chat.

*The five ABM steps in this guide, with the Enrich.chat endpoint that supports each one. Measurement stays in your CRM and ad tools. Endpoints are from [Enrich.chat's agents.md](https://enrich.chat/agents.md).*

### Step 1: Choose the target accounts

Start from your ideal customer profile and turn it into a named list with one row per company. [HubSpot's guide](https://blog.hubspot.com/sales/how-to-choose-target-accounts-account-based-marketing) says to settle the campaign goal first, such as winning a brand-name logo or re-engaging closed-lost deals, because the goal changes which accounts qualify. It builds the profile from your largest deals and repeat customers, plus at least seven interviews with sales and service colleagues. For technographics, it suggests accounts that run a complementary tool, or a rival product you often beat. Our guides to the [ideal customer profile](https://enrich.chat/blog/ideal-customer-profile/), [firmographic data](https://enrich.chat/blog/firmographic-data/) and [technographic data](https://enrich.chat/blog/technographic-data/) cover this work.

Two ABM points matter here. First, most listed accounts are not buying today. Research by the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute for LinkedIn's B2B Institute, [reported by Marketing Science](https://marketingscience.info/news-and-insights/ehrenberg-bass-95-of-b2b-buyers-are-not-in-the-market-for-your-products), finds that only about 20% of businesses are in the market for services such as software or banking in a given year, and just 5% in a given quarter. So the list is a plan to be known when an account starts looking. [6sense's 2025 survey](https://6sense.com/report/buyer-experience/) of nearly 4,000 buyers found the winning vendor was on the buyer's day-one shortlist 95% of the time. Our [intent data guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/intent-data/) covers signals that help with timing.

Second, keep the company website in every row. It is the key for every later lookup: contacts, tech stack, and matching in ad platforms.

### Step 2: Map the buying group

List the people who will shape the decision at each account, by role, not only the one contact you know. [Forrester's 2026 buying report](https://www.forrester.com/press-newsroom/forrester-2026-the-state-of-business-buying/) says the typical decision includes 13 internal stakeholders and nine external influencers, and that procurement is a decision maker in 53% of buying cycles. A Gartner survey of 632 B2B buyers, [republished by IT-Online](https://it-online.co.za/?p=296904), found groups of five to 16 people across up to four functions. Our [decision makers guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/decision-makers-in-a-company/) has the role table, and the [company org chart guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/company-org-chart/) shows how to draw it.

Set the depth by tier. Our suggestion, not a benchmark: 6 to 10 named people at a one-to-one account, 3 to 5 at one-to-few, and 1 or 2 at one-to-many. [SalesIntel](https://salesintel.io/blog/account-based-marketing/), a contact-data vendor, says that if you cannot reach the decision makers inside your target accounts, you cannot turn those accounts into customers. It builds its lists by department and by persona. You can build yours by hand from company pages and LinkedIn, or with a lookup by company website and title, as shown at the end of this guide.

### Step 3: Personalize for the group, not just the person

Write to the shared business problem first, then add a role angle. In the Gartner survey above, tailoring content to the buying group raised consensus by 20%. Content aimed at individual-level relevance had a 59% negative impact on consensus. Those are effects on consensus, not on win rates, so read them as direction, not a promise.

Depth should follow the tier. In [HubSpot's tiers](https://blog.hubspot.com/sales/account-based-sales), the first tier gets deep research and one-to-one custom outreach. The second tier gets personalization by industry and persona. For one-to-many, personalize by segment. Public facts about the business are enough: industry, headcount, location and the tools the account runs. Keep personalization about the company's work, not about a person's private life.

### Step 4: Coordinate the channels

Run every channel against one list, so each account hears a consistent story and no one is contacted twice by different teams. [LinkedIn's guide](https://www.linkedin.com/business/marketing/blog/abm/what-is-account-based-marketing-10-definitions-from-the-experts) names email, special events, direct mail and ads. In HubSpot's second tier, SDRs work by phone, email and social while marketing runs ads and events, in multi-touch campaigns that span several weeks.

Check the limits of your ad platform before you plan a tier around it. [LinkedIn's help page](https://www.linkedin.com/help/lms/answer/a423102) says a company list needs at least 300 rows to upload, must match at least 300 member accounts to run in an active ad set, and can take up to 48 hours to build. It matches on at least one of company name, website, email domain, Company Page URL or stock symbol. So a 20-account one-to-one list cannot be its own LinkedIn audience. Give those accounts events, direct mail and sales outreach, and use LinkedIn ads for the larger tiers.

Check the email rules before you send. The [FTC's CAN-SPAM guide](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/can-spam-act-compliance-guide-business) says the law makes no exception for business-to-business email, and that you must honor an opt-out within 10 business days. In the UK, the [ICO says](https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/direct-marketing-and-privacy-and-electronic-communications/business-to-business-marketing/) the email rule does not cover companies, but sole traders and some partnerships count as individuals, and a person's right to object to direct marketing is absolute. This is general information, not legal advice. Our guides to [cold email](https://enrich.chat/blog/cold-email/) and [B2B cold calling](https://enrich.chat/blog/tcpa-b2b-cold-calling/) go further, and [B2B lead generation strategies](https://enrich.chat/blog/b2b-lead-generation-strategies/) lists what to log before a first send.

### Step 5: Measure by account

Measure accounts, and compare them with accounts you leave alone. [Demandbase](https://www.demandbase.com/faq/account-based-marketing-101/) lists leading indicators (downloads, marketing qualified accounts) and lagging ones (win and loss rates, funnel velocity, annual contract value). For ad spend it suggests cost per engaged account. Our [lead scoring model guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/lead-scoring-model/) shows how to turn fit and engagement into one score.

Many teams do not measure this far. In Forrester's 2024 survey, [as reported by CRM Magazine](https://www.destinationcrm.com/Articles/CRM-Insights/Insight/ABM-Grows-but-Limits-Persist-168334.aspx), most firms measure market engagement and influence, only half measure marketing lift, and only one in five track lifetime customer value and post-sale results. A [third-party analysis](https://ivristech.com/abm-benchmarks/) argues that no published benchmark tells you your win rate. Only a comparison against your own non-target accounts does. Our suggestion: pick a holdout group of similar accounts, record a baseline before launch, and review quarterly. LinkedIn's guide warns that early on you are more likely to see small gains than big ones.

## What is account-based sales, and how does it differ from ABM?

Account-based sales (ABS) is the sales-led version of the same idea: reps own a defined list of target accounts and work several people inside each one. ABM is the marketing program around those accounts. [Saber's glossary](https://www.saber.app/glossary/account-based-sales) says ABS aligns sales activity with account-based marketing programs. In practice the two share one list.

[HubSpot's guide](https://blog.hubspot.com/sales/account-based-sales) says an account-based model treats every account like a market of one. Instead of one salesperson working one contact, a team works several stakeholders at the account. It quotes TOPO CEO Scott Albro, who proposes the name "Account-Based Everything," because the work spans sales, sales development, marketing, customer success and more.

|  | Account-based marketing | Account-based sales |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Led by | Marketing, with sales | Sales, with marketing |
| Unit of work | A campaign for an account or tier | An account plan for each named account |
| Typical tactics | Ads, content, events, direct mail, web pages | Research, calls, email and social, executive outreach |
| Needs from contact data | Contacts to match to ad lists and send to | Several named, reachable people per account |

HubSpot lists five checks for when ABS fits. Mid-market sellers with average deals above $50,000 are a strong fit, a view it quotes from sales author Trish Bertuzzi. A sales cycle of three months or more makes ABS sensible. Many stakeholders per deal call for a multi-threaded approach. Subscription products fit well. HubSpot says ABS is likely the wrong approach if you sell to small and medium businesses. Multi-threading is also protection: if your one contact leaves or goes quiet, the deal does not stall.

## Which ABM statistics can you trust?

Trust only the numbers that name a study, a sample, a method and a year. Many figures repeated in ABM guides do not. On October 16, 2026, [Salesforce's ABM guide](https://www.salesforce.com/marketing/account-based-marketing-guide/) said that B2B companies with ABM programs report a 38% higher sales win rate, 91% larger deal sizes and 24% faster revenue growth. The text names no study, sample or year. [Factors.ai's guide](https://www.factors.ai/blog/what-is-account-based-marketing-abm) credits "Forrester's 2025 ABM benchmark" for a figure that 87% of B2B marketing teams run an ABM program. The Forrester page we could open, [the 2024 report](https://www.forrester.com/report/the-state-of-account-based-marketing-in-2024/RES181829), shows only a summary behind a login, so we do not repeat that number.

An independent write-up by [Ivris](https://ivristech.com/abm-benchmarks/), dated August 2026, found three widely repeated claims with no traceable study: 35% higher close rates, 28% shorter sales cycles and "1.9 times" more likely to beat revenue targets. Treat any ABM number without a source trail the same way.

These figures do name their source, method and date:

| Finding | Source and method | Date | Caveat |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| ABM took 28% of marketing budget. 72% said ABM beats other marketing on ROI | [Momentum ITSMA and ABM Leadership Alliance](https://www.demandbase.com/press-release/the-abm-leadership-alliance-and-momentum-itsma-release-sixth-annual-abm-benchmark-report/), survey of almost 300 ABM leaders and practitioners | December 2022 | Self-reported by people who run ABM, and four years old |
| Top challenges: too little staff 37%, too little budget 35%, data usability 22%, unable to measure 20% | [Forrester 2024 State of ABM survey](https://www.destinationcrm.com/Articles/CRM-Insights/Insight/ABM-Grows-but-Limits-Persist-168334.aspx), B2B marketers with ABM duties, via CRM Magazine | Report December 2024, article March 2025 | Sample size not stated in the article. The full report is paid |
| 13 internal stakeholders and nine external influencers per decision. Procurement decides in 53% of cycles | [Forrester, State of Business Buying 2026](https://www.forrester.com/press-newsroom/forrester-2026-the-state-of-business-buying/) | January 2026 | The release gives no sample size or method. It covers buying, not ABM results |
| Group-tailored content: consensus up 20%. Individual-level content: 59% negative impact | [Gartner survey](https://it-online.co.za/?p=296904) of 632 B2B buyers | Survey August to September 2024 | Effect on consensus, not on revenue |

One row matters for contact data. Data usability was a top challenge for 22% of respondents in Forrester's survey, up from 19% in 2022. A list with stale or missing contacts weakens every step above. Our [B2B data decay guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/b2b-data-decay/) explains why lists age.

## When is ABM the wrong choice?

ABM is the wrong choice when you cannot name enough accounts worth the effort, when deals are small, or when sales will not take part. [Salesforce](https://www.salesforce.com/marketing/account-based-marketing-guide/) says you need enough high-value customer accounts to make the strategy worthwhile. HubSpot's checks point the same way: it calls ABS likely wrong for small and medium businesses, recommends it for mid-market deals above $50,000, and says a sales cycle of three months or more makes it sensible. In Forrester's survey, 18% of respondents named lack of sales buy-in as a top challenge, and 37% named too little staff.

If that sounds like your team, start with a wider motion. Our guide to [B2B lead generation strategies](https://enrich.chat/blog/b2b-lead-generation-strategies/) compares twelve, and a single one-to-few pilot of 10 to 20 accounts is a cheaper test of ABM than a full program. The pilot size is our suggestion, not a benchmark.

## How does Enrich.chat handle the contact-data step of ABM?

Enrich.chat turns an account's website into named people and work emails with a status, from an AI agent or a plain API. It covers steps 1 to 4 of Figure 2 for contact data only. The agent reads [enrich.chat/agents.md](https://enrich.chat/agents.md) once, or you add the MCP server at `https://enrich.chat/mcp`. The [install page](https://enrich.chat/install/) has steps for ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor and more. No key is needed to start.

| ABM job | Request | What comes back |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Check the account against your ICP | `GET /v1/company?domain=acme-freight.example.com` | Name, industry, headcount, state and country |
| See what the account runs | `GET /v1/company/tech?domain=acme-freight.example.com` | Technologies, each with a category |
| Find the buying group by title | `GET /v1/search?company_domain=...&title=...` | Up to 25 people per call: name, title, company, LinkedIn URL |
| Get the work email | `GET /v1/person?linkedin_url=...&fields=email` | Work email with a status of verified, catch_all or unknown |
| Intent, ad audiences, CRM sync, sending | Not covered | Use the tools you already have |

**Figure 3: One target account in, a buying group with statuses out.** An illustrative account website goes into Enrich.chat, which searches by title, looks up emails and reads the status. Four people come back. The VP Operations and the Head of Procurement have verified emails, the Head of IT has a catch_all email and no email was found for the CFO. Four people returned and three emails found use 50 credits, and the lookup with no email used 0.

*One illustrative account on the free tier or a plan. Names, titles and statuses are made up. Credits are spent on matches, and a lookup that finds nothing uses 0. Endpoints are from [Enrich.chat's agents.md](https://enrich.chat/agents.md).*

### What do the requests look like?

The agent searches by company website and title, then sends each LinkedIn URL to the person endpoint. A search returns up to 25 people, and a LinkedIn URL is only a lookup key: Enrich.chat never logs in to LinkedIn. The names, company and URLs below are made up.

```
GET https://enrich.chat/v1/search
  ?company_domain=acme-freight.example.com
  &title=procurement
  &limit=5
{
  "found": true,
  "count": 2,
  "people": [
    {
      "name": "Sam Rivera",
      "title": "Head of Procurement",
      "company": "Acme Freight",
      "linkedin_url": "https://www.linkedin.com/in/sam-rivera-procurement"
    },
    {
      "name": "Ana Costa",
      "title": "Procurement Manager",
      "company": "Acme Freight",
      "linkedin_url": "https://www.linkedin.com/in/ana-costa-procurement"
    }
  ],
  "credits_used": 10,
  "free_lookups_remaining": 9
}
```

```
GET https://enrich.chat/v1/person
  ?linkedin_url=linkedin.com/in/sam-rivera-procurement
  &fields=email
{
  "found": true,
  "name": "Sam Rivera",
  "title": "Head of Procurement",
  "company": {"name": "Acme Freight"},
  "work_email": {
    "value": "sam.rivera@acme-freight.example.com",
    "status": "catch_all"
  },
  "credits_used": 10,
  "free_lookups_remaining": 8
}
```

Read the status before you send. `verified` is the strongest label. `catch_all` means the domain accepts every address, so the mailbox cannot be confirmed, and Sam's email above belongs on a hold list. The free [catch-all checker](https://enrich.chat/tools/catch-all-checker/) and our guide to [catch-all emails](https://enrich.chat/blog/what-is-a-catch-all-email/) explain the risk. Treat every contact as a strong lead, not a guarantee.

```text
Use www.enrich.chat to build the buying group for each of these target account websites: [paste up to 25 websites]. For each website, find the VP of Operations, the head of IT, the head of procurement and the CFO, with name, title and LinkedIn URL. Then look up each person's work email, one request at a time, at about one request a second. Return one table per account with name, title, work email and email status. Put catch_all and unknown emails in a hold list, write not found where nothing matches, do not send any email, and tell me the total credits_used.
```

### What does it cost for a 400-account program?

Take an example program with three tiers. Each person returned uses 5 credits, each work email found uses 10, and each company check uses 5. A lookup that finds nothing uses 0, so the totals below are a ceiling. You get 10 free lookups a day with no signup, and one search counts as one lookup however many people it returns.

| Tier | Accounts | People | Credits if every person has an email |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| One-to-one, 8 people each | 20 | 160 | 2,400 |
| One-to-few, 4 people each | 80 | 320 | 4,800 |
| One-to-many, 2 people each | 300 | 600 | 9,000 |
| Company check, every account | 400 |  | 2,000 |
| Total | 400 | 1,080 | 18,200 |

The whole program uses at most 18,200 credits. That fits the Growth plan at $29 a month, billed monthly with unlimited seats and no annual contract. At about one request a second, the 1,080 email lookups take roughly 18 minutes, plus the searches. Mobiles cost 250 credits each, so ask only when a call is part of the plan. Mobiles for the 160 one-to-one contacts would add up to 40,000 credits, and calling or texting brings TCPA rules. See [Enrich.chat pricing](https://enrich.chat/pricing/) for every plan.

### What does Enrich.chat not do?

- **No intent or signal data.** It cannot tell you which accounts are in the market. Our guides to [intent data](https://enrich.chat/blog/intent-data/) and [sales signals](https://enrich.chat/blog/sales-signals/) cover that layer.
- **No ad platform and no sending.** You upload your own company list to LinkedIn, and Enrich.chat does not build audiences, send emails or run sequences.
- **No CRM app, saved lists or bulk export on self-serve plans.** Your agent or your own automation writes the results to your CRM. Enterprise adds bulk files and data licenses.
- **Titles, not roles.** It returns people by title and seniority. It does not label an economic buyer or a champion, so you assign the roles.
- **Websites, not names.** A company must be a website. The email input takes work emails only, not personal mailboxes. A search returns up to 25 people per call.

For the full field lists, see the [people search API](https://enrich.chat/api/people-search/), the [person enrichment API](https://enrich.chat/api/person-enrichment/) and the [company enrichment API](https://enrich.chat/api/company-enrichment/). The free [tech stack lookup](https://enrich.chat/tools/tech-stack-lookup/) and [lead list builder](https://enrich.chat/tools/lead-list-builder/) let you try one lookup first, and the [agents page](https://enrich.chat/agents/) shows the setup. ## Frequently asked questions

### What is account-based marketing in simple terms?

Account-based marketing is a B2B approach where marketing and sales choose a short list of target companies and run campaigns for those companies only. You pick the accounts first, then the people who buy inside each one, then write to them. [Salesforce](https://www.salesforce.com/marketing/account-based-marketing-guide/) calls ABM a strategy, not a product, meant to complement lead generation. See the [ideal customer profile guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/ideal-customer-profile/) for choosing accounts.

### What are the three types of ABM?

One-to-one ABM builds a fully custom program for a single strategic account. One-to-few ABM serves clusters of similar accounts, which [Demandbase](https://www.demandbase.com/faq/account-based-marketing-101/) sizes at 5 to 15 and [Factors.ai](https://www.factors.ai/blog/what-is-account-based-marketing-abm) sizes at 50 to 200. One-to-many ABM uses technology to personalize for hundreds of named accounts. Many teams blend all three, with the most effort on the smallest tier.

### What is the difference between ABM and account-based sales?

ABM is the marketing-led program around a target account list. Account-based sales is the sales-led version, where reps own named accounts and work several stakeholders at once. [HubSpot's guide](https://blog.hubspot.com/sales/account-based-sales) says an account-based model treats every account like a market of one, and suggests it for sales cycles of three months or more. Most teams run both from one shared list.

### How many accounts should be in an ABM target list?

It depends on the tier and on your team. [HubSpot](https://blog.hubspot.com/sales/account-based-sales) suggests 20 to 50 accounts for a deep one-to-one tier and about 200 for a second tier. Demandbase says few companies can afford true one-to-one ABM beyond a handful of critical accounts. Start small and count the hours each account needs. LinkedIn company-list ads need at least 300 companies, so small tiers need other channels.

### How do you find contacts at your target accounts?

List the website for each account, then look up people by title and seniority. With Enrich.chat, an agent sends a website and a title to `/v1/search`, gets names and LinkedIn URLs, then sends each URL to `/v1/person` for a work email with a status of verified, catch_all or unknown. 10 lookups a day are free with no signup. See the [people search API](https://enrich.chat/api/people-search/).

### How do you measure account-based marketing?

Measure accounts, not leads. [Demandbase](https://www.demandbase.com/faq/account-based-marketing-101/) lists engaged accounts, pipeline and revenue, with downloads and marketing qualified accounts as leading signs and win rates, funnel velocity and annual contract value as lagging ones. A [third-party analysis](https://ivristech.com/abm-benchmarks/) says only a comparison with your own non-target accounts shows your win rate, so keep a holdout group of similar accounts you do not touch.

Build the buying group for each target account

```text
Use www.enrich.chat to build the buying group for each of these target account websites: [paste up to 25 websites]. For each website, find the VP of Operations, the head of IT, the head of procurement and the CFO, with name, title and LinkedIn URL. Then look up each person's work email, one request at a time, at about one request a second. Return one table per account with name, title, work email and email status. Put catch_all and unknown emails in a hold list, write not found where nothing matches, do not send any email, and tell me the total credits_used.
