# AI lead finders in 2026: what the AI does, what the data does, and how to test one in 15 minutes

Four kinds of product share the label. We read the pricing pages and docs of eight products on October 16, 2026 to show how each finds people, what it charges and how to check it before you pay.

By Enrich.chat Editorial. Updated October 16, 2026.

**Short answer:** An AI lead finder is a search interface: you describe your buyers in plain English, and the AI turns that into a query and a summary. Instantly's own FAQ draws the same line between [the search interface and the contact database](https://instantly.ai/b2b-lead-finder). The data source decides whether emails work, so ask where contacts come from, what a miss costs, and whether your own agent can call it.

## Key takeaways

- The label covers four products: a database with an AI search box, a chat that calls a contact API, a research agent that reads the web, and a tool that mines your CRM history.
- Billing differs. On October 16, 2026, Instantly said it charges no credits when a verified work email is not found, and Apollo said it charges only for emails it can verify.
- Seamless.AI and ZoomInfo's sales plans hide paid prices. Leadsforge lists $49 a month, Instantly $47 and Apollo $49 per seat on annual billing, and The Quantum Leap sells a $5,000 pilot.
- A model on its own is not a data source. A 2025 paper argues that training and testing reward guessing over admitting uncertainty.
- You can run the loop yourself: describe the target, find the people, look up the email. Enrich.chat has saved lists and CSV export in its dashboard, but no sequencing or sending.

## What is an AI lead finder?

An AI lead finder is a search tool that takes a plain-English description of your buyers and returns a list of people. The label covers four different products, and they differ in the one way that matters: where the contacts come from.

- **A database with an AI search box.** You type "heads of operations at US logistics companies" and the tool turns it into filters over the contact database the vendor provides. [Apollo's AI Assistant](https://www.apollo.io/ai/assistant) and [Leadsforge](https://www.leadsforge.ai/) work this way. [Instantly's FAQ](https://instantly.ai/b2b-lead-finder) states the split plainly: the contact database is the data source, and the lead finder is the interface that queries it.
- **A chat or agent that calls a contact API.** The AI is a general assistant such as ChatGPT or Claude. It reaches a data service through an API or [MCP](https://modelcontextprotocol.io/docs/getting-started/intro), an open standard for connecting AI apps to outside systems. [Apollo](https://docs.apollo.io/docs/apollo-mcp), [Seamless.AI](https://seamless.ai/products/mcp) and [ZoomInfo's GTM AI](https://gtm.ai/pricing) each offer an MCP server or API, and so does Enrich.chat. Our guides cover [Apollo MCP](https://enrich.chat/blog/apollo-mcp-alternative/), [ZoomInfo MCP](https://enrich.chat/blog/zoominfo-mcp/) and the [best MCP servers for sales](https://enrich.chat/blog/best-mcp-servers-for-sales/).
- **A research agent that reads the web.** [Coherence's free AI Lead Finder](https://www.getcoherence.io/tools/ai-lead-finder) and [Clay's Claygent](https://www.clay.com/pricing) read public pages and write notes or a shortlist. Coherence says each result links to a source, and that it does not promise private contact details or verified emails. Our [Claygent guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/claygent/) covers the Clay version.
- **A tool that mines your CRM history.** [The Quantum Leap's AI Lead Finder](https://thequantumleap.business/ai-lead-finder) reads the call notes, tasks and emails already in your CRM and flags buying signals, such as contract end dates. It uses only your own records and is sold as a service.

Most pages that rank for this phrase are vendor lists. [Salesforge's guide](https://www.salesforge.ai/blog/ai-lead-generation-tools) says it checked where the AI helps and where a tool is "a filter panel with a chat box in front of it." That guide ranks Leadsforge first, and Salesforge's own site lists Leadsforge among its products, so read it as a vendor view.

**Figure 1: Four kinds of AI lead finder and where their contacts come from.** A table of four products sold as an AI lead finder, with what the AI does and where the contacts come from. A database with an AI search box turns a sentence into filters and a summary, and the contacts come from a contact database the vendor provides. A chat or agent that calls a contact API picks tools and writes up the answer, and the contacts come from a data API or MCP server. A research agent that reads the web browses pages and writes notes, and the contacts come from public web pages. A tool that mines your CRM history reads call notes and flags buying signals, and the contacts come from your own CRM records.

*Four products sold as an AI lead finder, grouped by where the contacts come from. Editorial grouping based on vendor pages read on October 16, 2026, including [Instantly](https://instantly.ai/b2b-lead-finder), [Coherence](https://www.getcoherence.io/tools/ai-lead-finder) and [The Quantum Leap](https://thequantumleap.business/ai-lead-finder).*

For a plain lead finder with no AI claim, see our guide to the [best lead finders](https://enrich.chat/blog/lead-finder/). For how AI fits each outbound step, read [AI lead generation: what works](https://enrich.chat/blog/ai-lead-generation/).

## What does the AI do, and what does the data source do?

The AI reads your request, writes the query and writes the summary. The data source holds the people. It decides whether a result exists, whether the email works and what a miss costs.

A language model alone is not a data source. A [2025 paper by Kalai and colleagues](https://arxiv.org/abs/2509.04664) argues that models hallucinate because training and testing reward guessing over admitting uncertainty. For contact data, that is a problem. A guessed address such as first.last@company.com looks just like a real one, so a finder with no data behind it still returns a tidy list. Our guide on [whether ChatGPT can find email addresses](https://enrich.chat/blog/can-chatgpt-find-email-addresses/) goes further.

**Figure 2: Where the AI ends and the data source begins.** Four steps in a vertical flow show where the AI ends and the data begins. First, you describe the buyer in plain English, for example heads of operations at US logistics firms with 200 to 1,000 staff. Second, the AI turns the sentence into a query with title, industry, country and headcount filters. Third, the data source returns the people with names, titles, emails and a status, and this step decides the result. Fourth, the AI writes a table or note that can only repeat what came back.

*One AI lead finder request, step by step. The AI handles the first and last steps. The data source in the middle sets what can be true. Editorial model; the risk of a model guessing is described in [Kalai et al., 2025](https://arxiv.org/abs/2509.04664).*

Vendor pricing shows the split. Apollo says its AI Assistant [does not use credits itself](https://www.apollo.io/ai/assistant), but some actions it runs, such as enrichment, may. ZoomInfo's GTM AI sells [data credits and AI credits](https://gtm.ai/pricing) as two meters. Clay charges [one Action per AI prompt, plus data credits](https://university.clay.com/docs/ai-pricing) that depend on the model. In each case you pay once for the thinking and once for the data.

The AI part is still useful. It is good at three jobs: turning a loose request into precise filters, ruling out poor fits in a result list, and writing a short note about each account. It cannot create a fact the source did not return. So judge the source, and treat the AI as the interface.

## Which AI lead finders exist, and what do they charge?

Eight products are below, at least one per type, with the pricing model each vendor published on October 16, 2026. Prices change, so confirm on the vendor's page before you buy.

| Product and type | Published pricing, checked October 16, 2026 | What the vendor says about misses | Free way to try it |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Apollo](https://www.apollo.io/pricing) Database with AI Assistant | Free $0. Basic $49, Professional $79, Organization $119 per seat a month, billed annually. The AI Assistant is [free as an introductory offer](https://www.apollo.io/ai/assistant) on paid plans. An email costs [1 credit and a phone number 8](https://www.apollo.io/pricing/about-credits). | Email credits only for emails Apollo can verify | Free plan, 5 AI Assistant chats a month |
| [ZoomInfo GTM AI](https://gtm.ai/pricing) Database queried by MCP, API or CLI | Search and lookup are free. A data credit was $0.38 at the 5,000-credit setting and an AI credit $0.05. Top-ups start at $20, no contract. Sales plans are [quote only](https://www.zoominfo.com/pricing). | Not stated on the pages read | 1,000 data and 1,000 AI credits at signup, no card |
| [Seamless.AI](https://seamless.ai/pricing) Database with an [MCP server](https://seamless.ai/products/mcp) | Paid prices are hidden: the pricing page is a contact form. The [help center](https://seamless.ai/customers/education/articles/seamless-ai-credit-and-license-types) lists Basic with 250 credits a month and Pro with 10,000, but no prices. | Not stated on the pages read | Free license: 50 credits, once |
| [Leadsforge](https://www.leadsforge.ai/pricing) AI chat search; API, MCP and CLI | Essential $49 a month for 2,000 credits, or $588 a year. Credits go to verified results, searching costs nothing, and credits never expire. | Searching is free; credits go to verified results | 100 free credits at signup |
| [Instantly](https://instantly.ai/pricing) Database with a lead finder agent | Data credits from $47 a month for 1,500 credits. A [work email costs 1 credit](https://help.instantly.ai/en/articles/11381241-supersearch-credit-system) if Instantly finds it and 2 if it comes from data partners. | No credits when a verified work email is not found | [Start for free](https://instantly.ai/b2b-lead-finder), no credit card |
| [Clay](https://www.clay.com/pricing) Research agent (Claygent) with a data marketplace | Free $0 with 100 data credits and 500 Actions a month. Launch from $167 a month and Growth from $446, both billed annually. Each AI prompt uses 1 Action plus data credits. | Not stated on the pages read | Free plan includes Claygent |
| [Coherence](https://www.getcoherence.io/tools/ai-lead-finder) Research agent on public web sources | The search tool is free with no account, capped per visitor. Workspace plans start at $0; paid plans are per user, and the [pricing page](https://www.getcoherence.io/pricing) applies regional pricing. | Not applicable: the search tool is free | The tool itself, no signup |
| [The Quantum Leap](https://thequantumleap.business/ai-lead-finder) CRM-history miner, sold as a service | A $5,000 fixed-fee pilot on one slice of your CRM history. No self-serve price. | Not applicable | None |

Two things show up in the table. First, [Seamless.AI](https://seamless.ai/pricing) and [ZoomInfo's sales plans](https://www.zoominfo.com/pricing) hide paid prices behind a form. Our [Seamless.AI pricing](https://enrich.chat/blog/seamless-ai-pricing/) and [ZoomInfo pricing](https://enrich.chat/blog/zoominfo-pricing/) guides give sourced ranges. Second, the units differ: seats at Apollo, credits at Leadsforge, Instantly and ZoomInfo's GTM AI, Actions plus credits at Clay, and a fixed fee at The Quantum Leap. Compare the cost of a usable contact, not the headline price.

If you want the database without the AI layer, our [Apollo](https://enrich.chat/blog/apollo-pricing/), [Clay](https://enrich.chat/blog/clay-pricing/), [Lusha](https://enrich.chat/blog/lusha-pricing/) and [RocketReach](https://enrich.chat/blog/rocketreach-pricing/) pricing guides show each plan in detail.

## Which kind of AI lead finder should you pick?

Pick the kind that matches what you need back. A list you can send from, a tool call inside your agent, notes on the public web and old CRM conversations each point to a different product.

- **You want a list you can browse and send from.** Choose a database with an AI search box, such as Apollo or Instantly. Apollo's Basic plan lists [unlimited sequences](https://www.apollo.io/pricing), and Instantly sells [outreach plans](https://instantly.ai/pricing) beside its credits.
- **You already work in ChatGPT, Claude or Cursor.** Choose a contact API behind your own agent. Apollo, Seamless.AI and ZoomInfo's GTM AI need an account on their service. [Clay MCP](https://enrich.chat/blog/clay-mcp/) and Enrich.chat are other options.
- **Your question is about the public web.** Coherence's examples include [companies hiring a founding designer](https://www.getcoherence.io/tools/ai-lead-finder). Choose a research agent, and expect sources rather than guaranteed emails.
- **Your best leads are old conversations.** Choose CRM mining. It only works if your CRM holds years of call notes.

## How do you test an AI lead finder in 15 minutes without paying?

Run six checks, two to four minutes each. Every product in the table except The Quantum Leap has a free way in, so you can test before you spend anything.

**Figure 3: A 15-minute test plan for an AI lead finder.** A timeline of six checks that fill 15 minutes. Ask for the contact source takes minutes 0 to 2. Repeat the ask in new words takes minutes 2 to 5. Check five known contacts, the strongest test, takes minutes 5 to 9. Cause a miss and read the bill takes minutes 9 to 11. Read the reason on results takes minutes 11 to 13. Call it from your own agent takes minutes 13 to 15.

*The 15-minute test, in minutes. Checking five contacts you already know is the strongest step, because you know the right answer. This is an editorial checklist, not a benchmark.*

1. **Ask for the contact source (2 minutes).** Look for a data page or help article. A vendor that cannot say what kind of source it uses gives you nothing to judge. Coherence says its leads come from [current public web sources](https://www.getcoherence.io/tools/ai-lead-finder). Instantly prices emails it finds itself and emails from data partners [differently](https://help.instantly.ai/en/articles/11381241-supersearch-credit-system).
2. **Repeat the ask in new words (3 minutes).** Search for "heads of operations at US logistics firms", then "operations leaders, logistics, United States". With a real data source behind the AI, you should see mostly the same people. If the two lists barely overlap, the AI is reading your words loosely.
3. **Check five contacts you already know (4 minutes).** Pick five people from your own CRM whose work emails you know are right, such as customers who have replied. Ask the tool for them and compare. This is the strongest check, because you know the answer. Use only contacts you hold lawfully.
4. **Cause a miss and read the bill (2 minutes).** Search for a role at a company that cannot hold it, or a made-up domain. Compare your balance before and after. Instantly's help center says [no credits are consumed](https://help.instantly.ai/en/articles/11381241-supersearch-credit-system) when a verified work email is not found, and Leadsforge says [searching costs nothing](https://www.leadsforge.ai/pricing). If a vendor does not say, this check tells you.
5. **Read the reason on results (2 minutes).** A useful result says why it is there: a status on the email, a source link, or a signal such as a job posting. Coherence [attaches a source to each result](https://www.getcoherence.io/tools/ai-lead-finder). A bare list of addresses with no status cannot tell you which ones are risky. The [catch-all checker](https://enrich.chat/tools/catch-all-checker/) shows why that matters.
6. **Call it from your own agent (2 minutes).** Look for API docs, an MCP endpoint or a CLI, and note the sign-in. Apollo's MCP server uses [OAuth, or a master API key](https://docs.apollo.io/docs/apollo-mcp) for headless clients. Seamless.AI uses [OAuth](https://seamless.ai/products/mcp). ZoomInfo's GTM AI says [MCP, API and CLI access](https://gtm.ai/pricing) are always included. Enrich.chat's MCP server needs no key.

Stop at the first failure. A tool that cannot name its source, or charges you for a miss without saying so, costs more than its price tag. Apply the same six checks to Enrich.chat: the free tier needs no signup and no key.

## How do you run the find-and-look-up loop with your own agent?

You can build an AI lead finder yourself. A general agent such as ChatGPT, Claude or Cursor does the thinking, and a contact API does the finding. The loop has three steps: describe the target, find the people, look up the email. Paste this prompt into your agent to run it.

```text
Use www.enrich.chat to find 15 heads of operations at US logistics companies with 200 to 1,000 employees. Show name, title, company and LinkedIn URL. Then look up the work email for the 5 best fits, show the status of each email, and tell me the credits_used. Never guess an email: say not found when nothing comes back.
```

Behind that prompt, the agent works through three steps:

1. **Describe the target.** The agent reads [agents.md](https://enrich.chat/agents.md) once, then turns your sentence into a call such as `GET /v1/search?q=heads of operations at US logistics companies&limit=15`. Filters such as `title`, `seniority`, `industry`, `country`, `employees_min` and `employees_max` narrow it, and one request returns up to 25 people with name, title, company and LinkedIn URL.
2. **Find the people.** The agent shows the list and drops poor fits, which is where the AI earns its keep. A LinkedIn URL is only a lookup key. Enrich.chat never logs in to LinkedIn.
3. **Look up the email.** For each person you keep, the agent calls `GET /v1/person?linkedin_url=...&fields=email` and reports `work_email.status` as `verified`, `catch_all` or `unknown`. A lookup that finds nothing returns `found: false` and uses 0 credits.

That run is one search plus up to five person lookups, so it fits in the free tier (10 lookups a day, no signup). If you want to repeat it on a plan, 15 people and 5 emails use 125 credits: 5 per person from search and 10 per work email found. That is a small part of the Growth plan at $29 a month, with unlimited seats and no annual contract. See the [pricing page](https://enrich.chat/pricing/) for every plan.

To skip the paste, add the MCP server at `enrich.chat/mcp`. The [install page](https://enrich.chat/install/) has the steps for each app. The free [AI lead list builder](https://enrich.chat/tools/lead-list-builder/) tool runs the same kind of search in your browser and returns a short shortlist, not a saved list. The [guide for AI agents](https://enrich.chat/agents/) covers the full setup. Treat every contact as a strong lead, not a guarantee, and read the email status before you send.

## What can't Enrich.chat do, and when is another tool the better choice?

Enrich.chat is a data layer for your own agent first. Its [dashboard](https://enrich.chat/platform/) also takes a plain-English description of who you want and keeps saved lists you can export as CSV. It has no sequencing or sending and no table builder like Clay's, so you send from the tools you already use.

- **Choose Apollo or Instantly** if you want one app where you browse a list, save it and send sequences. Our [best AI SDR tools](https://enrich.chat/blog/best-ai-sdr-tools/) guide covers tools that send for you.
- **Choose Clay** if you want a table with a research agent on every row and several data providers behind it. See [Clay pricing](https://enrich.chat/blog/clay-pricing/) and [waterfall enrichment](https://enrich.chat/blog/waterfall-enrichment/).
- **Choose Coherence's free tool** if the question is about the public web, such as businesses with no website.
- **Choose The Quantum Leap** if your best leads sit in old CRM notes.
- **Choose ZoomInfo** if you need an enterprise contract and its sales platform. Its prices are quote only.

Choose Enrich.chat when you want contacts as a tool call inside ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor or your own code. You get 10 lookups a day with no signup, then monthly credit plans from $29. Nothing is used when a lookup finds nothing. You stay responsible for CAN-SPAM, TCPA and GDPR in your outreach, and anyone can opt out at [enrich.chat/opt-out/](https://enrich.chat/opt-out/). This is general information, not legal advice.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is an AI lead finder?

An AI lead finder is a search interface that turns a plain-English description of your buyers into a list of people. The AI writes the query and the summary. The contacts come from a data source: a database the vendor provides, a data API your agent calls, public web pages, or your own CRM. That source, not the AI, decides whether a result exists and whether its email works.

### Is there a free AI lead finder?

Yes, several have a free way in. [Coherence's AI Lead Finder](https://www.getcoherence.io/tools/ai-lead-finder) runs searches with no account, capped per visitor. [Apollo's Free plan](https://www.apollo.io/ai/assistant) includes 5 AI Assistant chats a month, [ZoomInfo's GTM AI](https://gtm.ai/pricing) gives 1,000 data credits and 1,000 AI credits at signup, and [Leadsforge](https://www.leadsforge.ai/pricing) gives 100 free credits. Enrich.chat gives 10 lookups a day for free, with no signup.

### Can ChatGPT or Claude find leads on their own?

They can plan a search and write the summary, but they have no contact database of their own. Asked for an email from memory, a model may produce a plausible guess, because a [2025 paper](https://arxiv.org/abs/2509.04664) argues that training and testing reward guessing. Connect the assistant to a data tool over an API or MCP, and tell it to report only what comes back. See [can ChatGPT find email addresses](https://enrich.chat/blog/can-chatgpt-find-email-addresses/).

### How much does an AI lead finder cost?

It depends on the unit. On October 16, 2026, [Leadsforge](https://www.leadsforge.ai/pricing) listed $49 a month for 2,000 credits, [Instantly](https://instantly.ai/pricing) $47 a month for 1,500 credits, [Apollo](https://www.apollo.io/pricing) from $49 per seat a month billed annually, and [Clay](https://www.clay.com/pricing) from $167 a month billed annually. [Seamless.AI](https://seamless.ai/pricing) hides its paid prices. Enrich.chat plans start at $29 a month.

### How is an AI lead finder different from a lead database?

A lead database holds the contacts. An AI lead finder is the search layer on top, where you describe buyers in plain English instead of stacking filters. Some products sell both together. Others sell only one half: a research agent has no contact file, and a data API alone has no chat. Our [lead finder guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/lead-finder/) compares the database side.

### Can I use my own AI agent as a lead finder?

Yes. Give a general assistant a contact data tool and a clear prompt. With Enrich.chat, add the MCP server at enrich.chat/mcp (no key needed) or let the agent read the agents.md file, then ask it to find people and look up their emails. The [install page](https://enrich.chat/install/) lists per-app steps, and the free tier covers a first run.
