# The Clearbit API in 2026: what still works after HubSpot, and how to replace the rest

We read Clearbit's release notes, archived API docs and help center, and HubSpot's enrichment articles on October 16, 2026. Here is each API's status, how to get a key, and a field map for your code.

By Enrich.chat Editorial. Updated October 16, 2026.

**Short answer:** Clearbit has published [no end date for its paid APIs](https://clearbit.com/changelog), but it sells [no new standalone plans](https://web.archive.org/web/20250807091411/https://help.clearbit.com/hc/en-us/articles/20717192156695-How-Can-I-Buy-Clearbit), and its free Logo API ended on December 8, 2025. HubSpot's [enrichment docs](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/records/get-started-with-data-enrichment) describe no lookup API. To replace Person and Company calls, map the fields to Enrich.chat's [/v1/person](https://enrich.chat/api/person-enrichment/) and [/v1/company](https://enrich.chat/api/company-enrichment/).

## Key takeaways

- Clearbit's release notes, last updated November 24, 2025, set no end date for the Enrichment, Prospector, Reveal or Discovery APIs. Its help center says it sells no new standalone subscriptions.
- The Logo API ended on December 8, 2025, after an earlier December 1 date moved. Free use of the Name to Domain and Risk APIs ended on April 30, 2025.
- Clearbit's live API docs now redirect to a login. The archived June 2024 docs list Prospector, Reveal and Discovery as Enterprise-only.
- HubSpot's enrichment articles list 14 contact and 29 company properties. None of the contact properties is an email address or mobile number, and the articles describe no lookup API.
- On Enrich.chat, one Clearbit Combined call becomes two calls, /v1/person and /v1/company, at 5 credits each when found. A miss uses 0.

## Does the Clearbit API still work in 2026?

Clearbit has announced no end date for its paid APIs, so existing customers can keep using them as far as its public pages show. New customers cannot buy in. [Clearbit's release notes](https://clearbit.com/changelog) have no entry after November 24, 2025, and none sets a shutdown date for the Enrichment, Prospector, Reveal or Discovery APIs. [Clearbit's help center](https://web.archive.org/web/20250807091411/https://help.clearbit.com/hc/en-us/articles/20717192156695-How-Can-I-Buy-Clearbit), last updated April 30, 2025, says it is focused on current customers, sells no new standalone subscriptions, and sends new buyers to HubSpot.

What we cannot tell you is whether your own key answers today. Clearbit's API docs now sit behind a login. On October 16, 2026, `clearbit.com/docs` redirected to a Clearbit sign-in page, and we did not log in. We called no Clearbit endpoint. So read "still works" as "not ended in any notice we found", and ask your account contact for an end date in writing. Figure 1 sorts the cases by what you hold today.

**Figure 1: Can you get Clearbit API access today?** A four-row guide. A Clearbit customer from before December 4, 2023, or on a Clearbit by HubSpot plan, keeps using the key, and no end date is published. A person whose teammate has a Clearbit by HubSpot account joins through HubSpot first. A team whose records are in a paid HubSpot hub can use data enrichment, which the docs describe with no lookup API. Anyone else cannot buy Clearbit on its own and needs a different API.

## Which Clearbit APIs have ended, and which are still documented?

The free ones have ended, and the paid ones have not, as far as Clearbit says. The Logo API shut on December 8, 2025, and free use of the Name to Domain and Risk APIs ended on April 30, 2025. The table uses [Clearbit's API docs as archived on June 12, 2024](https://web.archive.org/web/20240612203412/https://dashboard.clearbit.com/docs), because the live docs need a login.

| Clearbit API | Who could use it | Status on October 16, 2026 |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Enrichment: Person, Company, Combined | Customers with a key on a paid plan | No end date in the [release notes](https://clearbit.com/changelog). No new standalone subscriptions. |
| Prospector | Enterprise plans only, per the archived docs | No end date in the release notes. |
| Reveal, IP address to company | Enterprise plans only, per the archived docs | No end date in the release notes. |
| Discovery, company search | Enterprise plans only, per the archived docs | No end date in the release notes. |
| Autocomplete | Anyone, with no account or key | Free and not regularly maintained, per the [help center](https://web.archive.org/web/20251011095034/https://help.clearbit.com/hc/en-us/articles/8502992633111-Autocomplete-Name-to-Domain-and-Risk-API-FAQ). Its logo field has returned null since September 9, 2025. |
| Name to Domain, Risk | Customers with a key | Free use ended April 30, 2025. Both are legacy and unsupported. The [June 10, 2025 notice](https://clearbit.com/changelog/2025-06-10) still lists Name to Domain for subscribers. |
| Logo | Anyone, with no key | Ended December 8, 2025, per the [November 24 notice](https://clearbit.com/changelog/2025-11-24). |

Guides disagree on dates. Clearbit's [February 2025 notice](https://clearbit.com/blog/the-future-of-clearbits-free-tools) and its June notice gave December 1, 2025 for the Logo API, and the November notice moved it to December 8. Some guides still print December 1. Follow Clearbit's latest notice. The archived docs say nothing about HubSpot, so they cannot tell you which plan covers which API. Our [Clearbit alternatives](https://enrich.chat/alternatives/clearbit/) page lists a replacement for each endpoint, including Logo.dev for logos, which Clearbit's own notice names.

## How do you get a Clearbit API key now?

New customers cannot. Clearbit's [account article](https://web.archive.org/web/20250807093100/https://help.clearbit.com/hc/en-us/articles/31991180154007-How-Do-I-Create-an-Account) says it is not offering new sign-ups, and its [purchase article](https://web.archive.org/web/20250807091411/https://help.clearbit.com/hc/en-us/articles/20717192156695-How-Can-I-Buy-Clearbit) says free accounts are not being created. One door stays open. If your company already has a Clearbit by HubSpot account, add the new user in HubSpot first, then send them to Clearbit's Sign Up with HubSpot page. That page works only when an account already exists for the HubSpot account.

Existing customers find their keys in the Clearbit dashboard. Per the archived docs, a request sends the key as the HTTP Basic username or as a Bearer token. The docs show keys that start with `sk_`, and publishable keys that start with `pk_` for the browser-side Reveal endpoint. Clearbit's help center says accounts created in 2024 are on a Sales Intelligence for HubSpot plan, Free, Growth or Business. It does not say what API access each includes, and no page we read does. If you depend on a key, copy the docs pages and field mappings you use while you still have a login.

## Does HubSpot have an API that replaces Clearbit's Person and Company APIs?

We found none. HubSpot's data enrichment articles describe a feature of CRM records, not an endpoint you can call from code. [HubSpot's getting started article](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/records/get-started-with-data-enrichment), updated July 10, 2026, says contact enrichment uses a first name, last name and work email, and company enrichment uses a domain. Records are enriched automatically, continuously, one at a time or in bulk. Enrichment does not use HubSpot Credits.

The result fills HubSpot properties. [HubSpot's property list](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/records/enrich-your-contact-and-company-data), updated October 7, 2026, has 14 contact properties and 29 company properties. No contact property is an email address or phone number, and personal addresses such as Gmail are not enriched. The list also shows bulk enrichment from an index page, capped at 100 records at a time, from a segment, from an import and from a workflow action. So HubSpot replaces a Clearbit Enrichment call only if you wanted the data inside HubSpot. For seat prices see our [Clearbit pricing guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/clearbit-pricing/), and for what each old product became see the [HubSpot Breeze Intelligence guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/hubspot-breeze-intelligence/).

## How do Clearbit's Person and Company fields map to Enrich.chat?

Enrich.chat's `/v1/person` and `/v1/company` return compact records, so many Clearbit fields have no match. For a person, the match is name, job title, company, level, function, location and LinkedIn URL, plus a work email and a mobile if you ask. For a company, it is name, domain, industry, size band, location and, where we hold them, a revenue band, founded year and funding stage. Clearbit's Combined API returned a person and a company in one reply. On Enrich.chat that is two calls, or three with a separate tech stack call. Figure 2 shows the split.

**Figure 2: One Clearbit Combined call becomes two or three Enrich.chat calls.** On the left, Clearbit's Combined API takes an email and returns a person and a company in one reply. On the right, Enrich.chat splits the job. A GET to the person endpoint with the email returns name, title, company and LinkedIn URL. A GET to the company endpoint with the domain returns name, industry, size band, revenue band and location. An optional GET to the company tech endpoint returns technologies with categories. Each result found uses credits and a miss uses 0.

*Clearbit's Combined call returned person and company in one reply. On Enrich.chat the same job is two calls plus an optional third. Each result found uses the credits shown, and a miss uses 0. Sources: [Clearbit's archived API docs](https://web.archive.org/web/20240612203412/https://dashboard.clearbit.com/docs), [Enrich.chat agent docs](https://enrich.chat/agents.md).*

The tables use field names from Clearbit's archived Person and Company docs and from Enrich.chat's [OpenAPI spec](https://enrich.chat/openapi.json). "None" means the reply has no equivalent field.

### Person fields

| Clearbit Person API | Enrich.chat /v1/person | Note |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `name.fullName` | `name` | One string. No separate first and last name fields. |
| `employment.title` | `title` | The current job title. |
| `employment.name` | `company.name` | Also carries the company's domain, size band and industry. Call `/v1/company` for a profile. |
| `employment.domain` | `company.domain` | You sent the email, so you also have the part after the @ sign. |
| `employment.role`, `subRole`, `seniority` | `function`, `level` | Level is c_suite, vp, director, manager, staff or other. Seniority also works as a filter on `/v1/search` and `/v1/company/people`: c_suite, founder, owner, vp, head, director, manager. |
| `linkedin.handle` | `linkedin_url` | A full URL, not a handle such as in/name. |
| Lookup by `email` | Lookup by `email` | Work emails only. Personal mailboxes such as Gmail are not looked up. |
| `phone` | `mobile.value`, `mobile.line` | Add `fields=mobile`. 250 credits when found. The line is mobile or unknown. |
| `location`, `geo.*`, `timeZone` | `location` | City, state and country where we hold them. No time zone. |
| `bio`, `site`, `avatar`, `twitter.*`, `github.*`, `facebook`, `gravatar` | None | No social profile data and no images. |
| `indexedAt`, `activeAt`, `inactiveAt`, `fuzzy`, `emailProvider` | None | A work email you ask for carries a status instead: verified, catch_all or unknown. |

### Company fields

| Clearbit Company API | Enrich.chat /v1/company | Note |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `name`, `domain` | `name`, `domain` | Send a bare domain. A full URL is reduced to its domain. A LinkedIn company page or a company id also works. |
| `category.industry` | `industry` | One plain-text label. Clearbit's sector, industry group, sub-industry and GICS, SIC and NAICS codes have no match. |
| `metrics.employees`, `employeesRange` | `employees_on_linkedin`, `size` | The first is people who list the company on LinkedIn, a signal for size and not an exact headcount. The second is a band such as 51-200. |
| `geo.city`, `geo.state`, `geo.country` | `city`, `state`, `country` | Names only. Postal code, coordinates and codes have no match. |
| `tech`, `techCategories` | `technologies` from `/v1/company/tech` | Add `include=technologies` to the company call, or make the separate call, 5 credits when found. Each item has a `name` and a `category`. |
| `metrics.annualRevenue`, `estimatedAnnualRevenue` | `revenue` | A band such as 10M-50M where we hold one, not an exact figure. |
| `raised`, `marketCap` | `funding` | The latest funding stage and date where we hold them. No amount raised and no market value. |
| `foundedYear`, `description` | `founded`, `description` | Present where we hold them. Founded is a year. |
| `tags`, `legalName`, `domainAliases`, `type`, `ticker` | None | No tags, legal name, aliases, company type or ticker. |
| `logo` | None | Enrich.chat returns no logos. See the Logo.dev route on our Clearbit alternatives page. |
| `linkedin` | `linkedin_url` | The company's LinkedIn page. A follower count comes with it. |
| `twitter`, `facebook`, `crunchbase`, `site.*` | None | No other social handles and no website contacts. |
| `parent`, `ultimateParent` | None | No corporate hierarchy. |

Two input rules also differ. Clearbit accepted hints beside an email, such as names, a company domain or a LinkedIn URL, to improve a match. Enrich.chat takes one identifier per call, so pick the strongest you hold: a LinkedIn URL, then a work email, then a name plus a company website. A company name alone is not supported. Our [Clearbit alternatives](https://enrich.chat/alternatives/clearbit/) page has the endpoint-by-endpoint map, the auth changes and a Python version. The [person enrichment API](https://enrich.chat/api/person-enrichment/) and [company enrichment API](https://enrich.chat/api/company-enrichment/) pages show full responses.

## What does a migrated Clearbit lookup look like on Enrich.chat?

It is two GET requests, using the email and domain you already hold. Say a sign-up form sent maya.ortiz@example.com to Clearbit's Combined API. On Enrich.chat you send that work email to `/v1/person`, then the part after the @ sign to `/v1/company`. The person, company and replies below are fictional and illustrative.

```
# Illustrative request. Maya Ortiz and example.com are fictional.
curl -G "https://enrich.chat/v1/person" \
  --data-urlencode "email=maya.ortiz@example.com" \
  --data-urlencode "fields=profile"
```

```
{
  "found": true,
  "id": "per_4Hk2x9QmVb7LrTzE",
  "name": "Maya Ortiz",
  "title": "Head of Revenue Operations",
  "company": {"name": "Example Freight", "domain": "example.com", "size": "201-500", "industry": "freight and logistics"},
  "level": "director",
  "function": "Operations",
  "location": {"city": "Dallas", "state": "Texas", "country": "United States"},
  "linkedin_url": "https://www.linkedin.com/in/maya-ortiz-example",
  "credits_used": 5,
  "free_lookups_remaining": 9
}
```

```
curl -G "https://enrich.chat/v1/company" \
  --data-urlencode "domain=example.com"
{
  "found": true,
  "id": "org_7Qw2eRt5YuI9oPaS",
  "name": "Example Freight",
  "domain": "example.com",
  "industry": "freight and logistics",
  "size": "201-500",
  "employees_on_linkedin": 420,
  "revenue": "10M-50M",
  "founded": 2009,
  "city": "Dallas",
  "state": "Texas",
  "country": "United States",
  "credits_used": 5,
  "free_lookups_remaining": 8
}
```

Each reply shows `credits_used`. The pair uses 10 credits, 5 for the person and 5 for the company. The counter `free_lookups_remaining` falls from 9 to 8 because each call is one of the day's 10 free lookups. If nothing matches, the reply has `found: false` and uses 0 credits. Check that field where your Clearbit code checked for a 404.

To add contact details, change `fields`. A lookup by name plus company website with `fields=email` returns a `work_email` with a value and a status of `verified`, `catch_all` or `unknown`, for 10 credits when found. `fields=mobile` returns a mobile with a line of `mobile` or `unknown`, for 250 credits. These are labels, not delivery guarantees, so treat every contact as a strong lead.

The free tier needs no key. A key is optional: it comes with a paid plan and lifts the free cap, and the [pricing page](https://enrich.chat/pricing/) lists the plans. Keep batches to about one request a second. To skip the HTTP code, your agent can read [agents.md](https://enrich.chat/agents.md) or add the MCP server at enrich.chat/mcp, and the [install page](https://enrich.chat/install/) has the steps. Paste this into ChatGPT, Claude or Cursor to test a few stored sign-ups:

```text
Use www.enrich.chat to replace a Clearbit lookup. For each work email below, return the person's name, title, company name and LinkedIn URL. Then look up the part after the @ sign as a company website and return its industry, size band, state and country. Mark misses as not found and tell me the total credits_used: [paste work emails]
```

For a single company, the free [tech stack lookup](https://enrich.chat/tools/tech-stack-lookup/) shows the technologies a domain runs. For one person, try the free [LinkedIn email finder](https://enrich.chat/tools/linkedin-email-finder/).

## How many credits does a Clearbit-style workload use?

A job that enriches 3,000 sign-ups a month uses 30,000 credits if every lookup finds a match. That fits the Growth plan at $29 a month. Clearbit never published API prices, as our [Clearbit pricing guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/clearbit-pricing/) explains, so this page compares workloads, not bills.

| Monthly job on Enrich.chat | Credits if all are found | Plan and cost |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 3,000 sign-ups: a person profile and a company profile each | 30,000 | Growth plan, $29 a month |
| The same, plus a tech stack for each company | 45,000 | Growth plan, $29 a month |
| Work emails for 500 leads, by name and company website | 5,000 | Growth plan, $29 a month |
| Mobile numbers for 100 of those leads | 25,000 | Growth plan, $29 a month |

A plan is a fixed monthly price, so these jobs use only part of it. Priced at the plan's own credit rate, the first job uses $8.70 of credits. Misses add nothing, so the table is an upper bound. Credits renew with each monthly payment and do not roll over.

The counting rules differ, and they matter when you migrate. Clearbit's docs say a Combined call counts as one API request, while Enrich.chat charges for each result found, so the same job is two found results. Clearbit also counted a 404 as a request. Figure 3 sets the two side by side.

**Figure 3: How Clearbit and Enrich.chat count a request.** Two cards with three rows each. Clearbit counts 200, 201 and 202 replies, counts a 404 not found reply against your quota, and counts the same email once in a billing period. Enrich.chat uses credits on a result found and shows them in credits_used, uses 0 credits when found is false, and lists no repeat rule, so you should store what you fetch.

*How each side counts a request. Clearbit's rule comes from a help article last updated December 21, 2022 for its older plans. Sources: [Clearbit help center, archived](https://web.archive.org/web/20251011094658/https://help.clearbit.com/hc/en-us/articles/115015390748-What-Counts-as-an-API-Request), [Clearbit's archived API docs](https://web.archive.org/web/20240612203412/https://dashboard.clearbit.com/docs), [Enrich.chat agent docs](https://enrich.chat/agents.md).*

Clearbit's [request-counting article](https://web.archive.org/web/20251011094658/https://help.clearbit.com/hc/en-us/articles/115015390748-What-Counts-as-an-API-Request) says only unique requests count in a billing period, and its docs say you pay once per period for each unique request. That let teams re-run a list without a second charge. Enrich.chat's docs list no repeat rule, so plan as if a repeat lookup uses credits again. Save each result in your own database the first time, and look a record up again only when you need a refresh.

## What do you lose when you leave Clearbit's API?

You lose most of the fields, a few whole endpoints and the speed limit you were used to. Here are the gaps, stated plainly.

- **Some company fields.** `/v1/company` has a revenue band, a founded year and the latest funding stage only where we hold them. It has no exact revenue, funding amount, industry codes, logo or most social handles, so check every field your code reads.
- **Reveal and Discovery.** Enrich.chat has no IP address to company lookup. For company search it has `/v1/companies`, which filters on traits such as industry, location, size, revenue band, technology and funding stage, and `/v1/search` finds people with the same company filters.
- **Name to Domain.** Company lookups take a website, a LinkedIn company page or a company id, and a company name alone is not supported. Add each company's website first, or ask your agent to find it with company search.
- **Personal emails and extra hints.** Gmail and other personal mailboxes are not looked up, and each call takes one identifier.
- **Social profiles and images on a person.** The person reply has a LinkedIn URL but no bio, avatar or other social handles.
- **Batching and speed.** A single call looks up one record. `POST /v1/batch` takes up to 25 records per call, and a [background job](https://enrich.chat/features/background-jobs/) runs up to 5,000 rows on the server, even after you close the tab (see [Bulk enrich](https://enrich.chat/features/bulk-enrichment/)). Clearbit's docs allowed 600 requests a minute. Keep Enrich.chat to about one request a second. For bulk files, ask about Enterprise at sales@enrich.chat.
- **Change alerts.** Clearbit's `subscribe` option let you subscribe to changes in a record. Enrich.chat has no equivalent: its signed webhooks announce finished jobs only, not changes to a person or company.
- **Client libraries and extensions.** Clearbit published Ruby, Node, Python, Go and Java bindings. Enrich.chat has no SDK yet, and SDKs are planned. It has no Gmail or Chrome extension either, so see the [Clearbit Connect alternatives](https://enrich.chat/alternatives/clearbit-connect/) for that job.
- **An EU filter.** Clearbit's lookups took a `suppression` option to leave out EU records. Enrich.chat has no such option.

## When is Clearbit or HubSpot the better choice?

Stay with Clearbit or HubSpot when your code reads fields Enrich.chat does not return, or when your records already live in HubSpot. Based on the sources above:

- **You use Reveal, Prospector or Discovery under a contract.** The archived docs describe an IP address to company lookup, contact search by role and seniority, and a company search with over 30 filters. Enrich.chat has no IP address lookup, and its search filters are not the same as those, so compare them with your queries first.
- **You read firmographic fields.** If your code uses NAICS or SIC codes, funding totals, exact revenue figures or logos from the Company API, Enrich.chat will not cover it. It returns a revenue band and the latest funding stage, not amounts.
- **Your CRM is HubSpot and a seat is paid.** HubSpot enriches new records on its own, can keep them updated, and needs no call code. See our [HubSpot enrichment guide](https://enrich.chat/integrations/hubspot/) for filling the email and mobile gaps it leaves.
- **Your contract has not ended.** With no end date published, there is no rush. Plan the move before renewal, and ask for terms in writing.

Choose an API like Enrich.chat when code or an AI agent makes the call, when you want to start with no signup, or when you do not want seats or an annual contract. For a wider field, see the [best company data APIs](https://enrich.chat/blog/best-company-data-apis/). Whichever you pick, you are responsible for TCPA rules on calls and texts and for CAN-SPAM and GDPR on email. This is not legal advice. Anyone can ask to be removed from Enrich.chat at [enrich.chat/opt-out/](https://enrich.chat/opt-out/), and the [terms](https://enrich.chat/terms/) cover account use.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is the Clearbit API still available in 2026?

For existing customers, nothing Clearbit has published says otherwise. Its [release notes](https://clearbit.com/changelog), last updated November 24, 2025, give no end date for the paid APIs, and its [help center](https://web.archive.org/web/20250807091411/https://help.clearbit.com/hc/en-us/articles/20717192156695-How-Can-I-Buy-Clearbit) says it focuses on current customers. It sells no new standalone subscriptions. We called no Clearbit endpoint, so ask your account contact for an end date.

### Can I still get a Clearbit API key?

Not as a new customer. Clearbit's [help center](https://web.archive.org/web/20250807093100/https://help.clearbit.com/hc/en-us/articles/31991180154007-How-Do-I-Create-an-Account) says it is not offering new sign-ups. If a teammate already has a Clearbit by HubSpot account, add yourself in HubSpot first, then use Clearbit's Sign Up with HubSpot page. For lookups without a key, Enrich.chat gives each IP address 10 free lookups a day with no signup.

### Is there a free Clearbit API?

Only Autocomplete. Clearbit's [help center](https://web.archive.org/web/20251011095034/https://help.clearbit.com/hc/en-us/articles/8502992633111-Autocomplete-Name-to-Domain-and-Risk-API-FAQ) says it needs no account or key but is not regularly maintained, and its [June 10, 2025 notice](https://clearbit.com/changelog/2025-06-10) says its logo field returns null from September 9, 2025. Free use of Name to Domain and Risk ended April 30, 2025. We did not call Autocomplete, so we cannot say how it answers today.

### What replaced the Clearbit Logo API?

Clearbit's [November 24, 2025 notice](https://clearbit.com/changelog/2025-11-24) says the public Logo API URL ended after December 8, 2025. Its [June 10 notice](https://clearbit.com/changelog/2025-06-10) says subscribers can still read a logo field from the Company Enrichment and Name to Domain APIs. [Logo.dev's guide](https://www.logo.dev/docs/migrations/clearbit) describes a host swap to img.logo.dev. Enrich.chat returns no logos.

### Does HubSpot have an API that replaces Clearbit's Person and Company APIs?

We found none. HubSpot's [getting started article](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/records/get-started-with-data-enrichment) and [property list](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/records/enrich-your-contact-and-company-data) describe a CRM feature and mention no lookup endpoint. A contact needs a business email and a company needs a domain. See our [HubSpot Breeze Intelligence guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/hubspot-breeze-intelligence/) for what each old Clearbit product became.

### What can I use instead of Clearbit's Person and Company APIs?

If code or an agent made the calls, Enrich.chat covers the common lookups with two GET endpoints. `/v1/person` takes a work email, a LinkedIn URL, or a name plus company website. `/v1/company` takes a domain, a LinkedIn company page or a company id. A profile found uses 5 credits and a miss uses 0. The replies have fewer fields than Clearbit's. See our [Clearbit alternatives](https://enrich.chat/alternatives/clearbit/) for other APIs.
