# Direct dials: what they are, how they compare to mobiles, and how to find them

A direct dial rings one person instead of a switchboard. Here is how desk lines, mobiles, main lines and extensions differ, what vendor call data shows, and the US rules for calling each.

By Enrich.chat Editorial. Updated October 15, 2026.

**Short answer:** A direct dial is a phone number that rings one specific person, with no switchboard, receptionist or phone menu in between. In telecom terms a desk direct dial is a DID (direct inward dialing) number: the [ATIS Telecom Glossary](https://glossary.atis.org/glossary/direct-inward-dialing-did/) defines DID as a feature that lets outside calls reach a specific extension without human intervention. Sales teams also count mobiles, which [Nooks found](https://www.nooks.ai/blog-posts/nooks-insights-heres-who-picks-up-the-most) connect 45% more often than other numbers.

## Key takeaways

- A desk direct dial is a DID: one outside number mapped to one extension, with no operator in between.
- Across nearly 3 million dials, Nooks found mobile numbers connected 45% more often than non-mobile numbers (2025).
- Desk numbers belong to the employer. US median job tenure was 4.1 years in January 2026, per the BLS.
- The FTC exempts most business-to-business calls from the Do Not Call Registry, but TCPA consent rules cover autodialed calls to every mobile.

## What is a direct dial?

A direct dial is a phone number that rings one specific person, with no switchboard, receptionist or phone menu in between. Call a company's main line and someone, or something, decides whether you get through. Call a direct dial and the person's own phone rings.

In telecom terms, a desk direct dial is a DID, short for direct inward dialing. The [ATIS Telecom Glossary](https://glossary.atis.org/glossary/direct-inward-dialing-did/) defines DID as a feature that lets outside calls reach a specific PBX extension without human intervention. A company rents a block of numbers from its carrier and maps each one to an extension. The numbers share trunk lines, so a company [might rent 100 numbers and run them over eight physical lines](https://www.techtarget.com/whatis/definition/Direct-Inward-Dialing-DID), as TechTarget explains. You will also see the term DDI, for direct dial-in, which [Dialpad's glossary](https://www.dialpad.com/uk/glossary/direct-inward-dialing/) treats as another name for the same thing.

Sales teams use the phrase more loosely. To them, a direct dial is any number that reaches the person: a desk DID or a mobile. In [Gong's study of more than 300 million cold calls](https://www.gong.io/resources/labs/the-hidden-power-of-cold-calling-insights-from-300m-calls/), top reps prioritize direct dials, which Gong describes as numbers that put a rep straight through to the contact. Data providers split the two. [Apollo's help center](https://knowledge.apollo.io/hc/en-us/articles/31969477982221), for example, labels personal numbers as mobile, work direct, home or other, and keeps the company HQ number apart.

**Figure 1: How a call reaches one person: main line, direct dial or mobile.** Three rows compare call paths. Dialing the main line reaches a receptionist or phone menu before the extension. Dialing a direct dial, or DID, goes through the company phone system with no human and rings a desk phone, laptop app or forwarded mobile. Dialing a mobile goes through the carrier straight to the person's own phone.

*How a call reaches the same person through a main line, a direct dial and a mobile. Sample numbers. Sources: [ATIS Telecom Glossary](https://glossary.atis.org/glossary/direct-inward-dialing-did/) and [Microsoft's Teams Phone features](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftteams/here-s-what-you-get-with-phone-system).*

## Direct dial vs mobile vs main line vs extension: what is the difference?

A main line reaches the company. An extension reaches a desk from inside the phone system. A direct dial reaches the person's desk from outside, and a mobile reaches the person wherever they are. The table sets the four side by side.

| Number type | What it rings | Gatekeeper? | Stops working when |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Main line (HQ or switchboard) | A receptionist, a phone menu or a call queue | Yes | The company changes its number |
| Extension | One desk, but only once you are inside the phone system | Yes, you reach it through the main line | The person moves desks or leaves |
| Direct dial (DID) | One person's desk phone or laptop app, from outside | No | The person leaves and IT takes the number back |
| Mobile | The person's own phone, wherever they are | No | The person changes their number |

Two details matter when you buy or clean phone data. First, a "phone" field in a contact record is often the company's main number. Check the label, or compare it with the company's HQ line, before you count it as a direct dial. Apollo, for one, [charges credits for personal numbers but not for HQ or corporate numbers](https://knowledge.apollo.io/hc/en-us/articles/31969477982221), which shows how differently the market values the two.

Second, a direct dial is not always a landline. Under [FCC porting rules](https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/porting-keeping-your-phone-number-when-you-change-providers), a number can move between wireline, IP and wireless providers in the same area. A desk number can live on a cloud phone system, and an old landline number can now be a mobile. A [phone number validator](https://enrich.chat/tools/phone-number-validator/) shows the current line type.

## Why do mobiles connect more often than desk lines?

Mobiles connect more often because they ring the phone the person carries, while desk lines ring a phone the person may not be near. Nearly everyone has one: [98% of US adults own a cellphone](https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/fact-sheet/mobile/), according to Pew Research Center's 2025 survey.

Every published comparison of number types we found comes from a sales software vendor. Read these as vendor data, not independent research.

- In a February 2025 study, [Nooks analyzed nearly 3 million dials](https://www.nooks.ai/blog-posts/nooks-insights-heres-who-picks-up-the-most) on its platform. Mobile numbers had a 45% higher connect rate than non-mobile numbers, and conversations on mobiles turned into meetings 18% more often.
- [Nooks' help center](https://nooks.help.usepylon.com/articles/9595602343-strategies-to-increase-your-connect-rates) says its data shows mobile numbers get twice the connect rate of work lines, and tells reps to dial mobiles first.
- In a 2020 case study [published by SalesIntel](https://salesintel.io/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/ScaleX-Case-Study-1.pdf), ScaleX called 100 VP and C-level executives at software companies. It took 73 dials to reach one person on desk direct dials and 10 dials on work mobiles. The sample was small, and the numbers came from SalesIntel's own data.

For context, connect rates are low on any number. Gong found that [the average rep connects with 5.4% of prospects](https://www.gong.io/resources/labs/the-hidden-power-of-cold-calling-insights-from-300m-calls/), and top-quartile reps with 13.3%. [Orum reported a 5.3% connect rate](https://www.orum.com/blog/dramatically-improve-your-cold-call-connect-rate-using-orum-s-ai-dialer) across its platform in 2023, or roughly one connect in 19 dials. At that rate, a lift of 45% or more from better numbers changes how many conversations a rep has in a day.

**Figure 2: Mobile connect rates compared with other lines in three vendor studies.** Horizontal bars show how many times more often mobile numbers connected than other numbers: 1.45 times in Nooks' analysis of nearly 3 million dials in 2025, 2 times against work lines according to Nooks' help center, and 7.3 times against desk direct dials in a 2020 SalesIntel case study of about 100 executives.

*Vendor-reported connect rates for mobiles, as a multiple of the other number type. Each study makes a different comparison, so the gap is a range, not one number. The 7.3x figure is 73 versus 10 dials per conversation. Sources: [Nooks Insights](https://www.nooks.ai/blog-posts/nooks-insights-heres-who-picks-up-the-most), [Nooks help center](https://nooks.help.usepylon.com/articles/9595602343-strategies-to-increase-your-connect-rates) and [SalesIntel](https://salesintel.io/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/ScaleX-Case-Study-1.pdf).*

The studies do not agree on the size of the gap, and they measure different things. Nooks compares mobiles with all other numbers. The SalesIntel study compares mobiles with desk lines at a time when most offices were empty. The gap also depends on who you call: in the [Nooks data](https://www.nooks.ai/blog-posts/nooks-insights-heres-who-picks-up-the-most), finance contacts were 148% more likely to answer on a mobile, while the edge for IT and support roles was smaller. Test on your own list before you plan around any one figure.

## How did remote work and softphones change direct dials?

Remote work moved the desk phone into a laptop app. A direct dial can now ring a softphone at home, a mobile app, or a desk phone in an empty office.

A large share of the workforce is still remote some of the time. [22.6% of US workers teleworked or worked at home for pay in March 2026](https://www.bls.gov/opub/ted/2026/22-6-percent-of-workers-teleworked-in-march-2026.htm), according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Office phone systems moved with them. Microsoft's [Teams Phone](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftteams/here-s-what-you-get-with-phone-system) replaces an office PBX and runs on PC, Mac and mobile. Users can set forwarding and simultaneous ring to any Teams colleague or outside number, and can move a live call from a laptop to the mobile app. With [Teams Phone Mobile](https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/office/getting-started-with-teams-phone-mobile-c37a6764-6c4f-4685-a26f-b84c12a71697), a company-issued SIM shares one number with the Teams app, and every signed-in device rings at once.

For the caller, this cuts both ways:

- A well set-up DID now follows the person. With forwarding or simultaneous ring turned on, a desk direct dial behaves much like a mobile.
- A DID that rings only a desk phone goes to voicemail when nobody is in the office. The [SalesIntel case study](https://salesintel.io/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/ScaleX-Case-Study-1.pdf) made this point in 2020: with most people at home, calls to office numbers rarely reached anyone.
- You cannot tell from the number which setup a company uses. Only dialing, and logging what happens, tells you.

## What happens to a direct dial when someone changes jobs?

A desk direct dial belongs to the employer, so it stops reaching the person the day they leave. A personal mobile belongs to the person and usually goes with them to the next job.

Job changes are common. The BLS found that [the median worker had been with their current employer for 4.1 years in January 2026](https://www.bls.gov/news.release/tenure.nr0.htm), and workers aged 25 to 34 for only 3.0 years. When someone leaves, the company's phone admin takes the number back. In Microsoft Teams, an admin [removes the number from the user's account](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftteams/assign-change-or-remove-a-phone-number-for-a-user) and can later assign any unassigned number to someone else. So a stale desk number in your CRM may ring a new hire, a stranger or a dead line.

Mobiles last longer. [FCC rules let people keep their number](https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/porting-keeping-your-phone-number-when-you-change-providers) when they switch carriers in the same area, so a personal mobile can outlive both a job change and a carrier change. A company-issued mobile is the exception: it can stay with the employer, like a desk line.

**Figure 3: What happens to each number when someone changes jobs.** Three lanes follow one person, Jane, from Acme to Beta. Her Acme desk direct dial and work email stop at the job change: the desk number stays with Acme, the inbox is closed, and she gets new ones at Beta. Her personal mobile continues unchanged across both jobs. US median tenure with one employer was 4.1 years in January 2026.

*Desk numbers and work inboxes belong to the employer. A personal mobile belongs to the person. Sample numbers. Sources: [BLS Employee Tenure in 2026](https://www.bls.gov/news.release/tenure.nr0.htm), [Microsoft Learn](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftteams/assign-change-or-remove-a-phone-number-for-a-user) and [FCC porting rules](https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/porting-keeping-your-phone-number-when-you-change-providers).*

Work email goes stale the same way, since the address dies with the job. That is why contact data is worth checking at the moment you use it, not when it was collected. Enrich.chat returns a status with every work email and a line type with every mobile. Our guide to [waterfall enrichment](https://enrich.chat/blog/waterfall-enrichment/) covers how teams combine sources to keep records current.

## How do you find someone's direct dial or mobile number?

Start with what the person has published, then try the company's own phone system, then a data provider. Free methods work for a handful of key accounts. For a list, you need a provider or an API.

| Method | Where to look | Best for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Company website | Team, press and contact pages, and event speaker pages | Senior and public-facing roles |
| Email signature | Any email from the person, or a reply to one you send | People you already email |
| LinkedIn Contact Info | The Contact Info link on the profile. A phone number [appears only if the person added it](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a1342405), and [some fields show only to connections](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a565128/contact-info-section-of-your-profile) | Your first-degree connections |
| Dial-by-name directory | Call the main line and use the phone menu's directory. Teams auto attendants, for example, [support dial by name or number](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftteams/here-s-what-you-get-with-phone-system) | Reaching a desk line at a known company |
| Data provider or API | Look up the person by LinkedIn URL, email, or name and company | Lists, CRMs and AI agents |

If you use a data provider, check three things on every number. Is it labelled mobile, direct or HQ? Does it differ from the company's main line? Does it say what kind of line it is? Enrich.chat returns a mobile only when it finds one for that person and marks its line `mobile` or `unknown`. That is the number's type, not proof that it works or belongs to the person, so log who answers.

To try one lookup without code, paste a profile into the [LinkedIn email and phone finder](https://enrich.chat/tools/linkedin-email-finder/). For lists, the [LinkedIn URL to email and mobile API](https://enrich.chat/api/linkedin-to-contact/) takes one profile per request, and an [AI agent](https://enrich.chat/agents/) can work through the whole list from one prompt. Our step-by-step guide covers [how to find a phone number from a LinkedIn profile](https://enrich.chat/blog/find-phone-number-from-linkedin/).

## How much does a direct dial cost?

Direct dial prices depend on how a provider bills. Some charge per number found. Others charge credits against a plan, and some charge for personal numbers but not for main lines.

- **Enrich.chat** sells monthly plans from $29 for 100,000 credits. A mobile found uses 250 credits and a lookup that finds none uses 0. Each response includes `credits_used`, so your agent can report the total. Your agent gets 10 free lookups a day with no signup. See [Enrich.chat pricing](https://enrich.chat/pricing/).
- **Apollo** [charges credits to access a verified personal number](https://knowledge.apollo.io/hc/en-us/articles/31969477982221), even if that number is on a do-not-call registry, and gives HQ numbers for free. Our [Apollo pricing guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/apollo-pricing/) works out what a credit costs.
- **ZoomInfo** is covered in our [ZoomInfo pricing breakdown](https://enrich.chat/blog/zoominfo-pricing/), which collects what buyers report paying.

Compare the price per number you can use, not the price per lookup. A cheap number that rings the switchboard costs rep time on every dial. For a wider view of vendors, see the [best B2B data providers](https://enrich.chat/blog/best-b2b-data-providers/).

## Is it legal to cold call a direct dial or mobile in the US?

Usually yes, but the rules depend on the number type. Most business-to-business calls are exempt from the federal Do Not Call Registry under FTC rules. The TCPA's consent rules still cover autodialed or prerecorded calls and texts to any mobile, business or personal. This is a summary, not legal advice.

### Do Not Call rules for B2B calls

The FTC's Telemarketing Sales Rule says the ban on calling registered numbers [does not apply to business-to-business calls](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/complying-telemarketing-sales-rule). One exception: B2B calls that sell nondurable office or cleaning supplies are covered. The FCC has its own Do Not Call rule, which protects [residential telephone subscribers](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/47/64.1200) who register their numbers. A switchboard or desk DID is a business line, so it generally falls outside that rule.

Mobiles are less clear. In its 2003 order, the FCC said it would [presume that wireless subscribers who register are residential subscribers](https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/FR-2003-07-25/html/03-18766.htm). In 2025, the Supreme Court held in [McLaughlin Chiropractic v. McKesson](https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/24pdf/23-1226_1a72.pdf) that district courts are not bound by the FCC's reading of the law. They must interpret it themselves, while giving the FCC's view appropriate respect. Courts now decide whether a registered mobile counts as residential, and a [TCPAWorld review of the cases](https://tcpaworld.com/2025/06/25/the-death-of-presumption-are-cell-phones-still-residential-post-mclaughlin/) shows they have split. The safe habit is to scrub mobiles against the national registry and the [statewide lists many states keep](https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/stop-unwanted-robocalls-and-texts), even for B2B. Sellers who use the registry must [refresh their lists every 31 days](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/complying-telemarketing-sales-rule).

### TCPA consent rules for mobiles

The TCPA bars calls made with an autodialer or an artificial or prerecorded voice to [any number assigned to a cellular telephone service](https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/47/227) without prior express consent. The statute does not exempt business mobiles. The FCC adds that [autodialed texts need consent and commercial texts need written consent](https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/stop-unwanted-robocalls-and-texts), and that these rules apply even if the number is not on the Do Not Call Registry. For landlines, the prerecorded-voice ban covers [residential lines](https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/47/227). Each violation can cost $500, and up to three times that if it was willful or knowing.

| US rule | Switchboard or desk DID | Mobile (work or personal) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| FTC Do Not Call Registry | Most B2B calls exempt | Most B2B calls exempt |
| FCC Do Not Call rule | Covers residential lines, so business lines generally fall outside | Registered mobiles presumed residential since 2003; courts now decide |
| Autodialed or prerecorded calls | Prerecorded ban covers residential lines | Prior express consent needed |
| Texts | A landline [generally can't receive SMS](https://www.twilio.com/docs/lookup/v2-api/line-type-intelligence) | Consent for autodialed texts; written consent for commercial texts |
| State Do Not Call lists | Check your state | Check your state |

Hand-dialed, one-to-one calls to business lines carry the least risk. Stop calling anyone who asks you to. You are responsible for compliance whatever your data source, Enrich.chat included, and anyone can remove their data at the [Enrich.chat opt-out page](https://enrich.chat/opt-out/).

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the difference between a direct dial and a DID number?

A DID, or direct inward dialing number, is the telecom feature behind most desk direct dials. The [ATIS Telecom Glossary](https://glossary.atis.org/glossary/direct-inward-dialing-did/) defines it as a way for outside calls to reach a specific PBX extension without human intervention. Direct dial is the sales term for any number that reaches one person, so it covers DIDs and mobiles. A DID assigned to one person is a direct dial. A DID that rings a team queue is not.

### Is a mobile number a direct dial?

Yes, in sales usage. A mobile reaches one person with no switchboard, so most teams count it as a direct dial, and often the best one. Data providers usually label it apart: [Apollo lists mobile and work direct](https://knowledge.apollo.io/hc/en-us/articles/31969477982221) as separate types. Vendor data favors mobiles. [Nooks found a 45% higher connect rate](https://www.nooks.ai/blog-posts/nooks-insights-heres-who-picks-up-the-most) for mobile numbers. Mobiles also carry stricter TCPA rules for autodialed and prerecorded calls.

### Can you call a direct dial that is on the Do Not Call list?

Usually, if it is a business line and you are selling to the business. The [FTC says the registry ban](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/complying-telemarketing-sales-rule) does not apply to most business-to-business calls, except sales of nondurable office or cleaning supplies. Mobiles are riskier. The FCC presumes registered wireless subscribers are residential, and since the 2025 McLaughlin ruling, courts decide that question for themselves. Scrub mobiles against the registry and state lists, and stop calling anyone who asks.

### How do you find someone's direct phone number for free?

Check the company website, press releases and event speaker pages first. Then look at the person's email signature and their LinkedIn Contact Info, which [shows a phone number only if they added one](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a1342405). You can also call the main line and use the dial-by-name directory to reach their extension. For more than a few people, use a data provider. Enrich.chat gives your AI agent 10 free lookups a day with no signup.

### Why do direct dials go to voicemail so often?

Many desk direct dials still ring a phone in an office the person rarely visits. The BLS found that [22.6% of US workers teleworked in March 2026](https://www.bls.gov/opub/ted/2026/22-6-percent-of-workers-teleworked-in-march-2026.htm). If the person has not set forwarding or simultaneous ring to a laptop app or mobile, the call drops to voicemail. Desk numbers also go stale when people change jobs. A mobile number is the better first dial, when you are allowed to call it.

### How much does a direct dial number cost?

It depends on the provider and how it bills. On Enrich.chat, a mobile found uses 250 credits and a lookup that finds none uses 0. Plans start at $29 a month for 100,000 credits, enough for 400 mobiles, with unlimited seats and no annual contract, as the [pricing page](https://enrich.chat/pricing/) shows. Apollo [charges credits for verified personal numbers](https://knowledge.apollo.io/hc/en-us/articles/31969477982221), even ones on a do-not-call registry, and does not charge for HQ numbers. Work out the cost per usable number, not per lookup, before you compare.
