# How to find someone's email address on LinkedIn, with or without a connection

LinkedIn shows an email only to the people the member chooses. Start with what LinkedIn gives you, then work out the company's format, verify it or look up the profile URL, and check the email rules before you send.

By Enrich.chat Editorial. Updated October 15, 2026.

**Short answer:** LinkedIn shows a member's email only in the Contact info section of their profile, only if they share it, and by default [only to 1st-degree connections](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a523134/visibility-of-your-email-address-on-linkedin). If it is hidden, connect and check again, export your connections, or work out the company's email format and verify a guess. A lookup by profile URL can return the work email with its status, without logging in to LinkedIn.

## Key takeaways

- LinkedIn shows a member's email only in Contact info, and by default only to 1st-degree connections. Members can open it to 2nd-degree connections or anyone, or hide it.
- The Contact info email is pre-filled from the address the member signed up with, so it can be a personal address rather than a work email.
- The connections export includes an email only for connections who allowed it, and it never covers people outside your 1st-degree network.
- Free accounts can add a note to 3 connection requests a month. Sales Navigator gives 50 InMail credits a month on every plan.
- CAN-SPAM makes no exception for business email, and UK and EU GDPR apply to a named work address such as jane.doe@acme.com.

## How do you find someone's email on LinkedIn?

Open the person's profile and select Contact info. LinkedIn shows an email there only if the member shares it, and by default only to 1st-degree connections, so you will often need a second method.

Here are the six methods, from the free LinkedIn ones to the fastest:

1. **Check Contact info.** Free and instant, if you are connected and they shared an email.
2. **Connect first, then check again.** Send a request with a short note and wait.
3. **Export your connections.** LinkedIn's data download lists the email of each connection who allowed it.
4. **Find the company's email format and verify a guess.** Work out the pattern, then check the mailbox.
5. **Look up the profile URL.** A contact data tool returns the work email with a status.
6. **Message on LinkedIn instead.** An InMail reaches people you are not connected to.

The right method depends on whether you are connected, how soon you need the email, and how many people you need. The tree below picks one in three questions.

**Figure 1: Pick a method in three questions.** A decision tree for finding an email from a LinkedIn profile. If you are a 1st-degree connection, check Contact info and your connections export. If not, and you can wait, connect with a note or send an InMail. If you need the email today for just one person, guess the company's email format and verify it. For a list of people, look up each profile URL. Every route ends the same way: verify the address and check the email rules before you send.

*Three questions pick the method. Step 5 also works for a single profile when you need the email in seconds. ## Does LinkedIn show someone's email address?

Yes, but only in the Contact info section, and only to the people the member allows. LinkedIn says a member's primary email is [only visible to their direct connections by default](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a523134/visibility-of-your-email-address-on-linkedin).

Each member picks one of four settings under Settings & Privacy, then Visibility, then Email visibility, according to [LinkedIn's Help Center](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a523134/visibility-of-your-email-address-on-linkedin):

| Email visibility setting | Who can see the member's email |
| --- | --- |
| Only visible to me | No one else |
| 1st-degree connections (the default) | Direct connections only |
| 1st and 2nd-degree connections | Direct connections and the people they are connected to |
| Anyone on LinkedIn | Any member who views the profile |

Two more details decide what you see. First, the same screen has a switch that lets connections [download the member's primary email in their data exports](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a523134/visibility-of-your-email-address-on-linkedin). If the member turns it off, the email stays out of your export. Second, the email in Contact info is [pre-filled from the address the member signed up with](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a565128/contact-info-section-of-your-profile). If they joined LinkedIn with a personal address, that is the one you see, not their work email.

Other parts of Contact info can still help. A website, blog or Twitter handle [may be visible to all members](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a545600/what-people-can-see-on-your-profile), connected or not, and the site it links to may list an address.

**Figure 2: Where a person's email can show up.** Six places a work email can come from. On LinkedIn: Contact info, shown to 1st-degree connections by default if the member shares it; your connections data export, only if the connection allowed it; and a website link, which may show to all members. Off LinkedIn: the company website's team and contact pages, which are public; email signatures in threads you already have; and the company's email format, which gives a guess you must verify first.

*Only the left column comes from LinkedIn, and each of those sources depends on what the member shared. The right column works for anyone, but a format guess must be verified before you send. ## How do you find an email on LinkedIn, step by step?

Work through the steps in order and stop when one gives you an address. Steps 1 to 3 use LinkedIn itself and only work for people you are connected to. Steps 4 to 6 work for anyone.

### Step 1: Check the profile's Contact info

On a desktop, open the person's profile and click **Contact info** in the introduction section, near their name and headline. On the mobile app, open the profile and scroll to the Contact section, as [LinkedIn's steps](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a543988/viewing-contact-information-of-a-connection?lang=en) describe.

The email shows only if the person [opted to share their details](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a543988/viewing-contact-information-of-a-connection?lang=en) and you fall inside their email visibility setting. Under the default, you must be a 1st-degree connection. If the panel shows only a profile link, the email is hidden from you.

Read the rest of the profile too: the About section, Featured links and recent posts. An address someone wrote there is one they chose to publish.

### Step 2: Connect first, then wait

If you are not connected, send a connection request and check Contact info again after the person accepts. Under the default visibility setting, accepting makes their email visible to you.

Select Connect on the profile, then Add a note, and say who you are and why you want to talk. A free account can [add a personalized message to up to three connection requests a month](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/46662), with up to 200 characters each. Premium members can send unlimited personalized invitations. If nothing happens after a week, move to Step 4 or Step 5.

Accepting does not guarantee an email. A member who chose Only visible to me stays hidden even from connections. You can still message them, now that you are connected, and ask for the best address.

### Step 3: Export your connections

LinkedIn lets you download a file of your connections, with an email for each one who allowed it. It is the quickest way to collect addresses for many people you already know.

1. Click the **Me** icon, then **Settings & Privacy**.
2. Select **Data privacy**, then **Get a copy of your data** under How LinkedIn uses your data.
3. Pick the option that includes connections, then select **Request archive**.
4. Open the email LinkedIn sends to your primary address and download the file.

Those steps come from LinkedIn's guide to [exporting connections](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a566336/export-connections-from-linkedin). The connections file holds [the first and last name, public profile URL, email address, company, position and connection date](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a1339364) for all 1st-degree connections. An email is included only when the connection authorized it. LinkedIn lists connections among the files ready within 48 hours, and the link works for 72 hours.

**Figure 3: What the connections file holds.** Four example rows from a LinkedIn connections export with name, profile URL, email address and company columns. Two rows show work emails. One row is blank because that connection did not allow email downloads. One row shows a personal Gmail address, because the file holds each member's primary LinkedIn email. Only 1st-degree connections appear, and the file also lists position and the date you connected.

*What the connections file holds, shown with made-up people. Expect blanks: an email appears only when the connection allowed it. Sources: [LinkedIn Help, Download your data](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a1339364), [email visibility](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a523134/visibility-of-your-email-address-on-linkedin).*

LinkedIn says [you can't export contacts who aren't 1st-degree connections](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a566336/export-connections-from-linkedin), and names in languages such as Chinese, Japanese or Hebrew may not come through. A blank email cell means the person kept their address private, so use Step 4 or Step 5 for them.

### Step 4: Find the company's email format and verify a guess

A company usually gives staff addresses in one pattern, such as jane.doe@acme.com. With the pattern and the domain you can build the address, but it stays a guess until you check the mailbox.

1. **Find the domain.** Copy the website from the company's LinkedIn Page. Some companies send email from a different domain, so confirm it in the next step.
2. **Find the pattern.** Enter the domain in the free [email format finder](https://enrich.chat/tools/email-format-finder/), or look the company up in our [directory of company email formats](https://enrich.chat/email-format/). By hand, search Google with the [site: operator and exact-match quotes](https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/2466433), such as `site:acme.com "@acme.com"`.
3. **List the candidates.** The [email permutator](https://enrich.chat/tools/email-permutator/) turns a name and domain into every common pattern, free and in your browser.
4. **Verify before you send.** Put the name and domain into the [email finder](https://enrich.chat/tools/email-finder/), which returns the work email with a status: verified, catch-all or unknown. A catch-all domain accepts mail for any address, so test it with the [catch-all checker](https://enrich.chat/tools/catch-all-checker/) and treat those addresses as risky.

If you cannot find one real address at the company, its size is a rough guide. In [Interseller's 2019 study of more than 5 million companies](https://www.interseller.io/blog/2019/02/04/top-email-address-patterns-by-company-size/), first name only was most common up to 50 staff, first initial plus last name from 51 to 1,000, and first.last above 1,000. Our guide to [business email formats](https://enrich.chat/blog/email-address-formats/) explains each pattern.

Never send to every guess to see which one sticks. Wrong guesses bounce, and Gmail's [email sender guidelines](https://support.google.com/a/answer/81126) tell senders to reduce volume when messages bounce and to unsubscribe recipients with multiple bounces.

### Step 5: Look up the profile URL with a contact data tool

A contact data tool takes the LinkedIn profile URL as a lookup key and returns the person's work email when it finds a match. You can run this LinkedIn email address lookup on any profile, connected or not, and it takes seconds.

Copy the address that contains linkedin.com/in/ and paste it into the [LinkedIn email finder](https://enrich.chat/tools/linkedin-email-finder/). You get the name, title and company, so you can confirm the person, plus the work email with its status. The website tools give you 10 free lookups, and a lookup with no match is not counted.

The tool never logs in to LinkedIn or uses your account. From code or an AI agent, the same lookup is one request to the [LinkedIn URL to email API](https://enrich.chat/api/linkedin-to-contact/):

```
GET /v1/person?linkedin_url=linkedin.com/in/jane-doe&fields=email
Host: enrich.chat
{"found": true,
 "name": "Jane Doe",
 "title": "VP Operations",
 "work_email": {"value": "jane.doe@acme.com", "status": "verified"},
 "credits_used": 10,
 "free_lookups_remaining": 9}
```

The `status` is `verified`, `catch_all` or `unknown`. A work email found uses 10 credits, and a response of `{"found": false}` uses 0. Each response includes `credits_used`, and on the free tier `free_lookups_remaining`. The [pricing page](https://enrich.chat/pricing/) has every plan.

Two things to know before you choose Enrich.chat. It has no Chrome extension, so you copy the URL yourself, and no built-in email sequencer, so you send from your own tools. Our [comparison of LinkedIn email finders](https://enrich.chat/blog/best-linkedin-email-finder/) covers tools that work inside LinkedIn.

### Step 6: Message them on LinkedIn instead

If you cannot find an email, talk to the person on LinkedIn. InMail reaches members you are not connected to, and you can ask for their email or keep the conversation there.

- **InMail credits.** LinkedIn gives [5 InMail credits a month on Premium Career and 15 on Premium Business](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a541643). [Sales Navigator gives 50 a month](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/57013) on Core, Advanced and Advanced Plus. You can bank up to 150, and you cannot buy more.
- **Credits back.** You get a credit back when the person [accepts, declines or responds within 90 days](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a541643). You cannot send a second InMail to the same member until they respond to the first.
- **Open Profile.** Some Premium members turn on Open Profile, which lets [anyone on LinkedIn contact them for free](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/140), even without a connection. Free accounts can send only a limited number of these messages each month.

Sales Navigator will not reveal a hidden email. A lead page shows contact information [only if the member added it, someone on your team entered it, or your CRM supplied it](https://www.linkedin.com/help/sales-navigator/answer/a106049/lead-pages-in-sales-navigator-overview?lang=en). Our [Sales Navigator pricing guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/linkedin-sales-navigator-pricing/) compares the plans.

## Which method should you use?

Use LinkedIn's own tools for people you are connected to, and a format check or URL lookup for everyone else. The table matches each situation to a method.

| Your situation | Best method | Cost | Time to an email |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| You are 1st-degree connected | Step 1: Contact info | Free | Seconds, if they shared it |
| You want emails for all your connections | Step 3: export your connections | Free | Up to 48 hours |
| You are not connected and can wait | Step 2: connect with a note | 3 free notes a month, unlimited on Premium | Days, if they accept |
| You would rather talk on LinkedIn | Step 6: InMail or Open Profile | InMail credits from Premium or Sales Navigator | Days, if they reply |
| You have a name and company, and time to check | Step 4: format, then verify | Free permutator, then 10 free lookups | Minutes |
| You need one email now | Step 5: paste the profile URL | 10 free lookups, then plans from $29 a month | Seconds |
| You need emails for a list | Step 5 through an AI agent or the API | 10 free a day, then plans from $29 a month | Minutes for the whole list |

Most people combine methods. A recruiter might look up the URL for the email, then send a connection note so the first message is not cold. A seller might run a list through an agent, then send InMails to the rows with no match.

## How do you get contact info from LinkedIn without a connection?

Without a connection, LinkedIn shows you a member's email only if they set email visibility to 2nd-degree connections or to anyone on LinkedIn. Everything else comes from outside LinkedIn or from the person.

- **Check what is public.** A website link in Contact info [may be visible to all members](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a545600/what-people-can-see-on-your-profile). Follow it to the person's site or their company's team page.
- **Use the company's own pages.** Team pages, press releases and author bios are public and often list an address.
- **Search your inbox.** If you or a colleague have traded email with their team, a signature or out-of-office reply may hold the address.
- **Build and verify it, or ask.** Use Step 4 or Step 5, ask a mutual connection for an intro, or send an InMail.

Phone numbers work the same way, with stricter rules for calls and texts. See our guide to [getting a phone number from LinkedIn](https://enrich.chat/blog/find-phone-number-from-linkedin/).

## What should you avoid when you look for emails on LinkedIn?

Avoid anything that copies data out of LinkedIn through your account, and anything that sends email to unverified guesses. The first puts your LinkedIn account at risk. The second hurts your sender reputation.

- **Scraping extensions and bots.** LinkedIn says it does not permit [browser plug-ins or extensions that scrape, modify the appearance of, or automate activity](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a1341387) on its site, and members who use them risk having their accounts restricted or shut down. Section 8.2 of the [LinkedIn User Agreement](https://www.linkedin.com/legal/user-agreement) bans software, including browser plugins and add-ons, that scrapes or copies profiles. Section 3.4 lets LinkedIn restrict, suspend or terminate accounts that break the agreement.
- **Fake or borrowed accounts.** Section 8.2 also bans creating a false identity and using someone else's account, so connecting from a fake profile to read Contact info breaks two rules.
- **Lists scraped from LinkedIn.** In July 2025 LinkedIn said it had [resolved its lawsuit against Proxycurl](https://news.linkedin.com/2025/LinkedInWinsLegalBattleToProtectMemberData), which it accused of unauthorized data scraping, fraud and trademark misuse. Gmail's guidelines also say [don't purchase email addresses from other companies](https://support.google.com/a/answer/81126).
- **Emailing every permutation or asking a chatbot to guess.** Five guesses to reach one person can mean four bounces, and a chat assistant with no data source can only guess. Verify first, as in Step 4.

Not every extension scrapes, and LinkedIn does not publish a list of banned tools. The risk is where the tool runs: an extension works inside your signed-in session, so any penalty lands on your account. Our [Apollo Chrome extension review](https://enrich.chat/blog/apollo-chrome-extension/) looks at one example, and our [Proxycurl alternative guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/proxycurl-alternative/) covers what the lawsuit meant for API buyers.

## What rules apply when you email someone you found on LinkedIn?

In the US, CAN-SPAM covers every commercial email, including email to businesses. In the UK and EU, a named work address is personal data, so GDPR applies even where you do not need consent to send. This is a summary, not legal advice.

### United States: CAN-SPAM

The FTC's compliance guide says [the law makes no exception for business-to-business email](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/can-spam-act-compliance-guide-business). Each commercial email needs accurate header details, a subject line that matches the content, a clear note that it is an ad, your valid postal address and a clear way to opt out. You must honor an opt-out within 10 business days, and you cannot contract that duty away to a vendor. Each email in violation can cost up to $53,088.

### United Kingdom: PECR and UK GDPR

Under PECR, the ICO says you [can email any corporate body](https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/direct-marketing-and-privacy-and-electronic-communications/guide-to-pecr/electronic-and-telephone-marketing/electronic-mail-marketing/), such as a company or an LLP, without prior consent. Sole traders, some partnerships and anyone on a personal address count as individuals, so you need their consent unless they are existing customers. You must not hide who you are, and you must give a valid address for opt-outs.

UK GDPR still applies to work emails, because an address like jane.doe@acme.com identifies a person. The ICO's [business-to-business marketing guidance](https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/direct-marketing-and-privacy-and-electronic-communications/business-to-business-marketing/) says that where PECR does not require consent, legitimate interests is likely to be the right lawful basis in many cases, and people keep an absolute right to stop direct marketing. The ICO notes that this guidance is under review after the Data (Use and Access) Act.

### European Union: GDPR

If you got someone's email from a source other than them, Article 14 of the GDPR says you must tell them, among other things, [which source the data came from](https://gdpr-info.eu/art-14-gdpr/). If you use the data to contact them, you must do it at the latest at the time of the first communication. Under Article 21, a person can [object to direct marketing at any time](https://gdpr-info.eu/art-21-gdpr/), and you must then stop. National email marketing rules also differ across the EU, so check the rules for each country you send to.

You are responsible for following the laws that apply to your emails, wherever the address came from. Anyone can ask Enrich.chat to delete their data on the [opt-out page](https://enrich.chat/opt-out/), and requests are processed within 15 days.

## How do you find emails for a whole list of LinkedIn profiles?

Give your list of profile URLs to an AI agent and let it run one lookup per row. You get back a table with a work email and its status for each match, and "not found" for the rest.

Paste this prompt into ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor or any agent that can make web requests, then paste your URLs below it:

```text
Use www.enrich.chat to find the verified work email for each LinkedIn profile URL in my list. Flag catch-all emails as risky, mark rows with no match as not found, and give me the total credits_used.
```

The agent reads the instructions at enrich.chat/agents.md and calls the API once per URL, at no more than 5 requests a second. Agents get 10 free lookups a day per IP with no signup. After that, monthly plans start at $29 for 100,000 credits. A work email found uses 10 credits, so 500 verified emails use 5,000 credits, which fits the Growth plan at $29 a month, and rows with no match use 0 credits. To add mobiles, see the [guide for AI agents](https://enrich.chat/agents/).

If you start from names and companies, use the [email finder](https://enrich.chat/tools/email-finder/) or our guide on [how to find anyone's work email](https://enrich.chat/blog/how-to-find-someones-email/). To build the list itself, describe your buyers to the [AI lead list builder](https://enrich.chat/tools/lead-list-builder/).

## Frequently asked questions

### Can you see someone's email on LinkedIn if you are not connected?

Only if the member allows it. LinkedIn shows a member's primary email [to direct connections by default](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a523134/visibility-of-your-email-address-on-linkedin). A member can open it to 1st and 2nd-degree connections or to anyone on LinkedIn, or hide it from everyone. If you see no email, connect and check again. Or look up the profile URL with the [LinkedIn email finder](https://enrich.chat/tools/linkedin-email-finder/), which returns a work email with its status and never logs in to LinkedIn.

### Why does LinkedIn show a personal email instead of a work email?

The email in Contact info is [pre-filled from the address the member signed up with](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a565128/contact-info-section-of-your-profile). If they joined LinkedIn with a personal address, that is what their connections see. For business outreach you usually want the work address instead. Work out the company's pattern with the [email format finder](https://enrich.chat/tools/email-format-finder/) and verify it, or look up the profile URL. In the UK, marketing email to an individual's personal address needs their consent under PECR.

### How do I hide my email address on LinkedIn?

Click the Me icon, then Settings & Privacy, then Visibility, and select Email visibility. Choose Only visible to me to hide it from everyone. On the same screen, turn off the option that lets connections download your email in their data export, per [LinkedIn's Help Center](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a523134/visibility-of-your-email-address-on-linkedin). Changes save automatically. Contact data tools may still list your work email. You can ask Enrich.chat to delete your data on the [opt-out page](https://enrich.chat/opt-out/), and requests are processed within 15 days.

### Does LinkedIn Sales Navigator show email addresses?

Only when someone has supplied one. A Sales Navigator lead page shows contact information [if the member added it, if you or a teammate entered it, or if it came from your CRM](https://www.linkedin.com/help/sales-navigator/answer/a106049/lead-pages-in-sales-navigator-overview?lang=en). It does not find or verify emails for you. What Sales Navigator adds is reach: [50 InMail credits a month](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/57013) on every plan. Our [Sales Navigator pricing guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/linkedin-sales-navigator-pricing/) compares the plans.

### How can I find someone's email from LinkedIn for free?

Start with Contact info and your connections export. Both are free, but they only cover 1st-degree connections who shared an address. For anyone else, list the likely addresses with the free [email permutator](https://enrich.chat/tools/email-permutator/), which runs in your browser with no limit. Then check the best guess with the [email finder](https://enrich.chat/tools/email-finder/). The website tools give you 10 free lookups, and a lookup with no match is not counted. Never send to a guess you have not verified.

### Can ChatGPT or Claude find someone's email from a LinkedIn profile?

Not on its own. A chat assistant has no live email data, so it can only guess a pattern, and it cannot check that the mailbox exists. Connect it to a contact data API and it can. Paste a prompt that points it to enrich.chat/agents.md, and it looks up each LinkedIn URL and returns the work email with its status. Agents get 10 free lookups a day per IP with no signup. After that, monthly plans start at $29 for 100,000 credits, and a work email found uses 10. See the [guide for AI agents](https://enrich.chat/agents/).
