# How to generate leads on LinkedIn, and get their work emails without breaking the rules

LinkedIn is where you find people, not where you get their contact details. Here are the routes LinkedIn gives you, the limits it documents, what its rules forbid, and the lawful lookup that turns a profile into a work email.

By Enrich.chat Editorial. Updated October 16, 2026.

**Short answer:** To generate leads on LinkedIn, aim for a conversation, not a list. Find people by hand through search, content, events, groups or Lead Gen Forms, and reach them within [LinkedIn's invitation limits](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/4800). LinkedIn [bans scraping tools and bots](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a1341387), so get a work email by looking up the person's name and company website, or profile URL, in a contact data API.

## Key takeaways

- A free LinkedIn account can add a note to three connection requests a month, up to 200 characters each. LinkedIn publishes no weekly invitation cap, but it restricts accounts that send many invitations that get ignored or flagged.
- InMail credits are fixed by plan: 5 a month on Premium Career, 15 on Premium Business and 50 on Sales Navigator. A reply within 90 days returns the credit.
- Section 8.2 of the User Agreement bans scraping software, bots and browser add-ons, and the Community Policies bar promotional messages in invitations to strangers.
- Lead Gen Forms are the one native route that hands you a contact list: pre-filled forms, up to 12 fields, a CSV download, paid through the ad set.
- LinkedIn shows an email only if the member shares it. A lookup by name and company website, or by profile URL, returns a work email with a status, and a lookup with no match uses 0 credits.

## What does generating leads on LinkedIn really mean?

Generating leads on LinkedIn means starting conversations with people who may need what you sell. A name on a list is not a lead. A lead is a named person, a reason to talk to them and a way to reach them.

Aim for conversations, because most people you find are not buying today. LinkedIn's [B2B Institute](https://business.linkedin.com/advertise/resources/b2b-institute/b2b-research/trends/95-5-rule) says 95% of potential buyers are not ready to buy today. It cites joint research with the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute: 75% of companies buy computers once every 4 years, and 80% change banking services once every 5. Your first message should earn a reply. It should not ask for a sale.

Most top-ranking guides cover profile tuning, posting, connection requests and ads. Then they send you to a Chrome extension or an automation tool. [Lemlist's guide](https://www.lemlist.com/blog/linkedin-lead-generation) calls a Chrome extension or LinkedIn scraper its favorite way to gather contact details in bulk. [Skylead's guide](https://skylead.io/blog/linkedin-lead-generation/) promotes its own LinkedIn automation tool for outreach. LinkedIn's rules, covered below, do not permit extensions or tools that scrape or automate its site. This guide follows the whole path instead (Figure 1).

**Figure 1: From a LinkedIn profile to a conversation.** Five steps run in order: find people by hand on LinkedIn, warm up by reading and commenting, get contact data with a lookup by name and company website or profile URL, check the status and log the source, then reach out. Step three is the one most outreach guides skip.

*The full path from a profile to a conversation. Steps 1 and 2 happen on LinkedIn, by hand. Step 3 is the one outreach-tool guides skip. ## Which native routes find and reach people on LinkedIn?

LinkedIn gives you five routes: your profile and content, search, messages, Lead Gen Forms, and events and groups. Each has limits that LinkedIn documents in its Help Center. We read those pages on October 16, 2026. The table puts them side by side.

| Route | What you get | Limit or cost LinkedIn documents | Contact details? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Profile and content | People who follow, comment or accept | Following needs no invitation | Only what the member shares |
| Search and Sales Navigator | A filtered list of people | Free search has an unpublished commercial use limit. Sales Navigator shows up to 2,500 leads per search | No export. Only what someone supplied |
| Connection requests and InMail | A direct message | Free: 3 notes a month. InMail: 5, 15 or 50 credits a month by plan | No |
| Lead Gen Forms | People who submit a pre-filled form | Paid ads, up to 12 fields | Yes, what they submit |
| Events and groups | Attendee lists and group members | 1,000 event invitations a week | No |

### Profile and content

Follow people before you ask to connect. [LinkedIn says](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a702683) following lets you see someone's public posts and articles without sending an invitation. It suggests connecting, with a note, once you have met. A useful comment on a post gives you a reason to talk that a cold request lacks.

Your own profile works as an inbound route. By default, your email is [visible only to your direct connections](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a523134/visibility-of-your-email-address-on-linkedin). LinkedIn lets you widen that to second-degree connections or to anyone, so check the setting if you want leads to write to you.

### Search and Sales Navigator

Free search works, but LinkedIn limits it. The [commercial use limit](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a564226) applies when your activity suggests hiring or prospecting. LinkedIn shows a warning as you near it, gives no number, and resets free monthly usage at midnight PST on the first of each month. Searching by name does not count. Browsing your own first-degree connections does not count either. LinkedIn says you can upgrade to Premium Business, Recruiter Lite or Sales Navigator to raise the number of searches and views.

Sales Navigator Core starts at US$119.99 a month per license, per [LinkedIn's compare plans page](https://business.linkedin.com/sell/sales-navigator/compare-plans), which we checked on October 16, 2026. A search shows [up to 2,500 lead results across 100 pages](https://www.linkedin.com/help/sales-navigator/answer/a106030). You can save [1,000 leads in each list and 10,000 in total](https://www.linkedin.com/help/sales-navigator/answer/a101025), 25 at a time. LinkedIn says it [does not offer a CSV or XLS export](https://www.linkedin.com/help/sales-navigator/answer/a102031) of leads. Our guides explain [Sales Navigator pricing](https://enrich.chat/blog/linkedin-sales-navigator-pricing/) and [what you may do when you export leads](https://enrich.chat/blog/export-leads-from-sales-navigator/).

Search by role, company size and place. Then add a reason to act now, such as a job post, a new hire or a recent post. Our guides to the [ideal customer profile](https://enrich.chat/blog/ideal-customer-profile/) and [intent data](https://enrich.chat/blog/intent-data/) show how to turn those signals into filters.

### Connection requests and InMail

A free account can add a personalized note to [up to three connection requests a month](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/46662), with 200 characters each. Premium members can add notes to every request, though request limits may still apply. An older [LinkedIn page](https://www.linkedin.com/help/billing/answer/a550555) says five a month, so check the box in your own invitation window.

The LinkedIn help pages we read give no weekly cap on invitations. Its [help page on restrictions](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/4800) says an account can be restricted for sending many invitations in a short time, for many invitations that are ignored, left pending or marked as spam, or for suspected automation. Most restrictions lift within a week. LinkedIn cannot lift one on request. A withdrawn invitation cannot be resent to the same person for up to three weeks, and the network limit is 30,000 first-degree connections. Treat any weekly figure from another site as a guess.

The [Professional Community Policies](https://www.linkedin.com/legal/professional-community-policies) add a rule: do not use the invitation feature to send promotional messages to people you do not know. So your note says who you are and why you want to connect. It does not pitch. For people you do not know, LinkedIn's own advice is to [use InMail and Groups](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/4800).

InMail credits depend on your plan, according to [LinkedIn's InMail page](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a541643):

| Plan | Credits a month | Most you can bank |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Premium Career | 5 | 15 |
| Premium Business | 15 | 45 |
| Sales Navigator (Core, Advanced, Advanced Plus) | 50 | 150 |

You get a credit back when an InMail is accepted, declined or answered within 90 days. You cannot send a second InMail to the same member until they respond to the first. All three Sales Navigator plans [give the same number of credits](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/57013), and LinkedIn does not sell extra ones. Members with [Open Profile](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/140) accept messages from anyone without InMail credits, and free accounts can send only a limited number of those each month.

### Lead Gen Forms

Lead Gen Forms are the one native route that hands you a contact list. They are paid ads. A member clicks your ad, sees a form pre-filled from their profile, and submits it. LinkedIn says there is [no additional cost for the form](https://www.linkedin.com/help/lms/answer/73944) beyond the ad set. Ads are bought per click or per impression, and cost per lead is not available.

You can choose up to 12 fields. Members can edit fields such as work email and phone before they submit, per [LinkedIn's field guide](https://www.linkedin.com/help/lms/answer/79852). You must add a [privacy policy URL](https://www.linkedin.com/help/lms/answer/a420012), and you can add a disclosure checkbox for each way you plan to use the data. Download leads as a CSV from Campaign Manager or sync them to a CRM. LinkedIn says members can delete submitted data, and that collected member profile data [can be stored for only one year](https://www.linkedin.com/help/lms/answer/a425750).

### Events and groups

Events and groups put you in front of people who share an interest. For events, [organizers and attendees can invite 1,000 connections a week](https://www.linkedin.com/help/billing/answer/98193). After you accept an invitation, you can open the [list of attendees](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/98189). LinkedIn says you can message attendees you are connected to, and use InMail for those you are not. In a group, you can send a [message request](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/119257) to a member. LinkedIn adds that it may limit your ability to message people you are not connected to.

## What does LinkedIn allow and forbid?

LinkedIn allows you to use the site by hand and forbids software that scrapes it or acts for you. Section 8.2 of the [User Agreement](https://www.linkedin.com/legal/user-agreement) lists the bans. We read the version effective November 3, 2025 on October 16, 2026. This is a summary, not legal advice.

**Figure 2: What LinkedIn allows and forbids for lead generation.** Two columns compare what LinkedIn allows when you use the site by hand, such as search, following, short notes, InMail and Lead Gen Form ads, with what it forbids: scraping extensions, bots that invite or message, fake or shared logins, add-ons that alter the site and sales pitches in cold invitations.

*What LinkedIn allows when you use the site by hand, and what it forbids. Sources: [User Agreement](https://www.linkedin.com/legal/user-agreement), [prohibited software and extensions](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a1341387), [Professional Community Policies](https://www.linkedin.com/legal/professional-community-policies).*

- **Scraping.** No software, scripts, robots, crawlers, browser plugins or add-ons that scrape or copy the Services, including profiles and other data.
- **Automation.** No bots or other unauthorized automated methods to add or download contacts, send or redirect messages, or comment on, like or share posts.
- **Third parties.** No copying or distributing information from LinkedIn through third parties, such as data aggregators or brokers, without the content owner's consent.
- **Identity.** No false identity, no shared logins and no copied cookies.

LinkedIn's page on [prohibited software and extensions](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a1341387) says members who use such tools risk having their accounts restricted or shut down, and that the tools may stop working without notice. Section 3.4 lets LinkedIn limit your connections and your ability to contact members, and restrict, suspend or terminate an account that breaks the rules. This guide gives no steps for scraping or automating LinkedIn. For the court cases, read [Is it legal to scrape LinkedIn?](https://enrich.chat/blog/is-linkedin-scraping-legal/)

Section 8.1 adds a duty. Members agree to follow all applicable laws, including privacy laws and anti-spam laws. That is why the checks later in this guide matter.

## How do you get a work email or phone number for someone you found on LinkedIn?

Look the person up from what you already know: their name and company website, or their public profile URL. This is the step the outreach guides skip, because LinkedIn shows contact details only when the member allows it. It shows an email only if the member shares it, and by default [only to direct connections](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a523134/visibility-of-your-email-address-on-linkedin). A Sales Navigator lead page shows contact information only if the member added it, someone on your team typed it in, or your CRM supplied it, [per LinkedIn](https://www.linkedin.com/help/sales-navigator/answer/a106049/lead-pages-in-sales-navigator-overview?lang=en).

Work down this list and stop at the first lawful answer:

1. **What the person published or shared.** A team page, a byline, or Contact info after they connect. [How to find an email on LinkedIn](https://enrich.chat/blog/find-email-on-linkedin/) walks through each.
2. **A lookup by name and company website.** It needs nothing from LinkedIn, only who they are and where they work.
3. **A lookup by public profile URL.** Copy the [address that starts with linkedin.com/in/](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a522735) yourself, not the linkedin.com/sales/ link. Do it by hand, one person at a time, because Section 8.2 bans software that copies profile data. To avoid LinkedIn data altogether, use the name and company website.
4. **A message on LinkedIn.** Ask for the best address, or keep the conversation in the inbox.

A contact data API takes those inputs. Enrich.chat never logs in to LinkedIn or uses anyone's LinkedIn account, and a profile URL is only a lookup key. A request by name and company website looks like this:

```
GET /v1/person?name=Jane%20Doe&company=acmelogistics.com&fields=email
Host: enrich.chat
{"found": true,
 "name": "Jane Doe",
 "title": "VP Operations",
 "company": {"name": "Acme Logistics"},
 "linkedin_url": "https://www.linkedin.com/in/jane-doe-ops",
 "work_email": {"value": "jane.doe@acmelogistics.com", "status": "verified"},
 "credits_used": 10,
 "free_lookups_remaining": 9}
```

Compare the name, title and company in the reply with the profile you looked at before you use the email. The company must be a website, not a company name. The `status` is `verified`, `catch_all` or `unknown`. A catch-all domain accepts every address, so treat those emails as risky. A work email found uses 10 credits and a mobile uses 250. A reply of `{"found": false}` uses 0 credits. Phone numbers follow stricter rules for calls and texts, so read [how to get a phone number from LinkedIn](https://enrich.chat/blog/find-phone-number-from-linkedin/) first.

**What Enrich.chat does not do.** It has no LinkedIn extension, no Sales Navigator export and no automation. It sends no messages and runs no sequences. You pick the person and copy the name or URL yourself, then send from your own tools. If you want a tool that works inside LinkedIn, our [comparison of LinkedIn email finders](https://enrich.chat/blog/best-linkedin-email-finder/) covers them, along with LinkedIn's warning about extensions.

Paste this prompt into an AI agent that can make web requests, with the details of a person you found by hand. The example is fictional:

```text
Use www.enrich.chat to find the work email for Jane Doe, VP Operations at acmelogistics.com. Her profile is linkedin.com/in/jane-doe-ops. Do not log in to LinkedIn or open the profile. Show the email with its status, plus the title and company so I can confirm it is the same person. If nothing matches, say not found.
```

## How do you check and keep the contact details you find?

### Check the status before you send

Read the status on every row. Send first to the rows marked verified, and hold back catch_all and unknown rows until you have a reason to trust them. A mobile comes back with a line type, `mobile` or `unknown`. That is the number's type, not proof that it works or belongs to the person. Treat every contact as a strong lead, not a guarantee.

Watch your bounces. Mailgun's general recommendation is to keep the [bounce rate under 2%](https://www.mailgun.com/blog/deliverability/email-bounces-what-to-do-about-them/), and Google asks senders to keep [reported spam rates below 0.10%](https://support.google.com/a/answer/81126). At 10 emails a week, one bounce is 10%, so track the rate over a month and fix the cause of every bounce. Our guide to [email bounce rates](https://enrich.chat/blog/email-bounce-rate/) explains the math. People change jobs often, so re-check an address before you reuse it. The guide to [B2B data decay](https://enrich.chat/blog/b2b-data-decay/) shows how fast.

### Record the source and honor opt-outs

Log the source and date next to every contact, for example "found by hand on LinkedIn, name and company lookup, October 16, status verified." You will need that record when someone asks where you got their details. Keep a suppression list of people who said no, and check every new row against it. Our guide to [cold email data and sender rules](https://enrich.chat/blog/cold-email/) shows what to keep. Anyone can also ask Enrich.chat to delete their data on the [opt-out page](https://enrich.chat/opt-out/), and requests are processed within 15 days.

### GDPR and CAN-SPAM in short

**GDPR (EU and UK).** A work email that names a person is personal data. If you did not get it from the person, [Article 14 of the GDPR](https://gdpr-info.eu/art-14-gdpr/) says you must tell them the source of the data. You must do it within one month at the latest, and no later than your first message if you use the data to contact them. Under [Article 21](https://gdpr-info.eu/art-21-gdpr/) a person can object to direct marketing at any time, and then you must stop. The UK ICO says that if you collect a person's business contact details to send them [direct marketing, you must tell them and have a lawful basis](https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/direct-marketing-and-privacy-and-electronic-communications/business-to-business-marketing/). The ICO notes that this guidance is under review.

**CAN-SPAM (US).** The [FTC's guide](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/can-spam-act-compliance-guide-business) says the law makes no exception for business-to-business email. Each message needs honest header and subject lines, a note that it is an ad, your postal address and a way to opt out. You must honor an opt-out within 10 business days, and each email in violation can cost up to $53,088. Calls and texts to mobiles follow other rules, see [TCPA rules for B2B calls and texts](https://enrich.chat/blog/tcpa-b2b-cold-calling/). Lists bought in bulk add risk, see [buying email lists](https://enrich.chat/blog/buying-email-lists/).

This is general information, not legal advice. A status is not consent or a lawful basis, and you stay responsible for following GDPR, CAN-SPAM and TCPA.

## What does a weekly LinkedIn lead routine look like?

A workable week is about three hours for 25 people. Pick people on Monday, research on Tuesday, look up contacts on Wednesday, reach out on Thursday and review on Friday (Figure 3). Every number below is a suggestion to adjust, not a benchmark.

**Figure 3: A suggested weekly LinkedIn lead routine, about three hours.** Five bars show a suggested week for 25 people: Monday 30 minutes to pick people, Tuesday 60 minutes to research, Wednesday 30 minutes to look up contacts, Thursday 45 minutes to reach out and Friday 30 minutes to review, about 195 minutes in total.

*A suggested week for 25 people, 195 minutes in all. The lookup step is the one most guides leave out. The times are our assumptions, not measurements.*

| Number | Why we suggest it |
| --- | --- |
| 25 people a week | Sales Navigator [saves 25 leads at a time](https://www.linkedin.com/help/sales-navigator/answer/a101025), and we assume two minutes to read a profile and its recent posts |
| Up to 10 connection requests | Connect with people you have already engaged with. Free accounts get 3 notes a month, so use them on your best accounts |
| Up to 5 InMails | Sales Navigator's 50 credits a month is about 12 a week, and Premium Business's 15 is about 3 a week. Replies return the credit |
| Up to 10 emails | Send only to rows marked verified. Ten is a number you can personalize by hand |
| 25 contact lookups, about 100 a month | That fits the 10 free lookups a day if you spread them over three days. On a plan, 100 work emails use 1,000 credits, which fits the Growth plan at $29 a month |

Each Friday, count two things: how many people replied and how many emails bounced. Reply rates vary with your audience and offer, so compare each week with your own last one. Change one thing at a time.

## Where does Enrich.chat fit, and where does it stop?

Enrich.chat handles one step: it turns a person you found into contact details with a status. Your agent reads [enrich.chat/agents.md](https://enrich.chat/agents.md), or you add the MCP server at enrich.chat/mcp, and then it calls `/v1/person` with a name and company website or a profile URL. Agents get 10 free lookups a day per IP with no signup. After that, monthly plans start at $29 for 100,000 credits, with unlimited seats. See [pricing](https://enrich.chat/pricing/) and the [guide for AI agents](https://enrich.chat/agents/).

It does not find people inside LinkedIn, post for you or send a message. To find people without starting on LinkedIn, describe your buyer to the [AI lead list builder](https://enrich.chat/tools/lead-list-builder/) or the [people search API](https://enrich.chat/api/people-search/). To test one profile, paste its URL into the free [LinkedIn email and phone finder](https://enrich.chat/tools/linkedin-email-finder/). The [LinkedIn URL to contact API](https://enrich.chat/api/linkedin-to-contact/) page shows a full response.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do you generate leads on LinkedIn for free?

Search and filter by hand, follow and comment on posts, join events and groups, and send short notes. Free accounts can add a note to [three connection requests a month](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/46662), and free search has a [commercial use limit](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a564226) that LinkedIn does not publish. Then look up the contact details of the people who reply, using a name and company website. Enrich.chat gives 10 free lookups a day with no signup.

### How many connection requests can you send on LinkedIn per week?

LinkedIn publishes no weekly number. Its [help page on invitation restrictions](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/4800) says accounts can be restricted for sending many invitations in a short time, for many ignored, pending or flagged invitations, or for suspected automation. Most restrictions lift within a week, and LinkedIn cannot remove one on request. Treat weekly figures from other sites as guesses, and connect first with people you have already engaged with.

### What is the 95-5 rule on LinkedIn?

It is a B2B marketing idea from LinkedIn's [B2B Institute](https://business.linkedin.com/advertise/resources/b2b-institute/b2b-research/trends/95-5-rule): at any moment about 95% of potential buyers are not ready to buy today, and about 5% are. The institute cites research that 75% of companies buy computers once every four years. For lead generation it means most people you message will not buy this week, so aim for a conversation and a reason to reply later.

### Are LinkedIn Lead Gen Forms free?

The form is free, but the ads are not. LinkedIn says there is [no additional cost for Lead Gen Forms](https://www.linkedin.com/help/lms/answer/73944) outside the cost of the ad sets that carry them. You pay per click or per impression, and cost per lead is not available. You must add a privacy policy URL, and you can download leads as a CSV. LinkedIn says members can delete the data they submitted.

### Can you use automation tools for LinkedIn lead generation?

LinkedIn says no. Its [prohibited software page](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a1341387) says it does not permit crawlers, bots, browser plug-ins or extensions that scrape or automate activity, and members who use them risk having their accounts restricted or shut down. Section 8.2 of the [User Agreement](https://www.linkedin.com/legal/user-agreement) bans bots that send messages or add contacts. See our guide to [scraping and the law](https://enrich.chat/blog/is-linkedin-scraping-legal/).

### How do you get an email address for a LinkedIn lead?

LinkedIn shows an email only if the member shares it, and by default [only to direct connections](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a523134/visibility-of-your-email-address-on-linkedin). For everyone else, look up the person's name and company website, or their public profile URL, in a contact data API. Enrich.chat returns a work email with a status (verified, catch_all or unknown) and never logs in to LinkedIn. See [how to find an email on LinkedIn](https://enrich.chat/blog/find-email-on-linkedin/).
