# What is Apollo.io? What it does, how credits work, what it costs and when another tool fits better

Apollo.io sells a B2B contact database with outreach tools in one per-seat plan. Here is what it does, who it suits, what you get on each plan, how its credits work, where it falls short, and how to opt out.

By Enrich.chat Editorial. Updated October 16, 2026.

**Short answer:** Apollo.io is a sales platform that puts a B2B contact database, email and phone outreach, deal tracking and data enrichment in one per-seat subscription. Apollo says its database holds [240M+ contacts](https://www.apollo.io/product/data). It has a free plan and paid plans from [$49 a seat a month billed yearly](https://www.apollo.io/pricing), and an email costs 1 credit while a phone number costs 8.

## Key takeaways

- Apollo.io combines a B2B contact database, email and phone outreach, deal tracking and enrichment in one subscription. Apollo says over 600,000 companies use it and its database holds 240M+ contacts.
- An email costs 1 credit and a phone number 8. Credits are pooled across the team, granted each billing cycle, and expire unused, add-on credits included.
- Checked October 16, 2026: Free is $0 with 75 credits a month. Basic is $49 a seat billed yearly or $65 monthly, Professional $79 or $99, and Organization $119, annual only, with 3 seats minimum.
- Apollo's terms renew subscriptions automatically unless you give 30 days' notice, and fees are non-cancelable and non-refundable. Plans are for internal business use only.
- Apollo is a data broker. Anyone can opt out in its Privacy Center, and Apollo keeps a suppression list so the profile is not added again.

## What is Apollo.io?

Apollo.io is a sales platform that puts a B2B contact database, email and phone outreach, light deal tracking and data enrichment in one subscription. A company called ZenLeads, Inc. runs it under the Apollo.io name, per [Apollo's privacy policy](https://www.apollo.io/privacy-policy). Reps use it to find buyers, get their work emails and phone numbers, and contact them from the same app.

Apollo now calls itself an AI go-to-market system with three layers: data, intelligence and execution, per [its home page](https://www.apollo.io/). For most users the older description still fits. You search a database, spend credits to reveal contact details, then send sequences and make calls from one seat.

Apollo's size claims vary by page. Its [Chrome Web Store listing](https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/apolloio-free-b2b-phone-n/alhgpfoeiimagjlnfekdhkjlkiomcapa) still says 210M contacts and 35M accounts, while its site says 240M+ and 30M+. The 40,000 paying customers figure also appeared in a [2023 funding report](https://siliconangle.com/2023/08/29/sales-intelligence-startup-apollo-now-worth-1-6b-100m-round/), so it may be dated. Treat all of these as marketing, not audited counts.

### Is Apollo.io the same as Apollo GraphQL?

No. Apollo GraphQL is a separate company. It sells [GraphOS](https://www.apollographql.com/), a platform for building on a company's existing APIs and systems, and its home page does not mention Apollo.io. If a guide talks about GraphQL schemas, it is about that company. If it talks about credits, contacts and sequences, it is about Apollo.io. Our [Apollo API guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/apollo-api/) and [Apollo MCP guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/apollo-mcp-alternative/) make the same check.

## What does Apollo.io do, and who uses it?

Apollo does four jobs: it holds a contact database, enriches your own lists, runs outreach and tracks deals. Figure 1 shows each job and whether it spends credits or comes with the seat.

**Figure 1: The four jobs in one Apollo subscription.** Four stacked rows show the jobs in one Apollo subscription. Database: filter by role, size and industry, where Apollo says it has 240M+ contacts, and revealing an email costs 1 credit and a phone number 8. Enrichment: fill gaps in your own lists from CSV files, a CRM or the API, for 1 to 8 credits each. Engagement: sequences, a dialer, mailboxes, a Chrome extension and Gmail tools come with the seat, and the dialer uses credits. Deals: leads, deals, meetings and reports, with Salesforce and HubSpot sync, are included in the seat.

*The four jobs in one Apollo subscription, and whether each spends credits (orange tag) or comes with the seat (grey tag). Some seat features, such as AI research and calls, also use credits. Our grouping of the features on [Apollo's pricing page](https://www.apollo.io/pricing) and [Apollo Data page](https://www.apollo.io/product/data), checked October 16, 2026.*

- **Database.** You filter people by role, industry, company size and location. Apollo says every record has [65+ data points](https://www.apollo.io/product/data). Paid plans add advanced filters, and signals such as job changes and funding rounds.
- **Enrichment.** Apollo fills gaps in your own records from CSV files, your CRM or its API. Its waterfall feature, on Basic and above, asks [20+ partner sources](https://www.apollo.io/product/data) in turn until a field is filled. Our [data enrichment guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/what-is-data-enrichment/) explains the idea.
- **Engagement.** Sequences are automated multi-step email campaigns. A US dialer places calls. A Chrome extension shows Apollo data in [Gmail, LinkedIn and on company websites](https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/apolloio-free-b2b-phone-n/alhgpfoeiimagjlnfekdhkjlkiomcapa). Our [Apollo extension review](https://enrich.chat/blog/apollo-chrome-extension/) covers its permissions and limits.
- **Deals and CRM tools.** Under "deal execution," [Apollo's pricing page](https://www.apollo.io/pricing) lists lead management, deals, meetings, conversations and reports. It also syncs with Salesforce, HubSpot and Pipedrive, so a team that already has a CRM can keep it.
- **AI features.** Apollo has an AI assistant, AI research at 1 credit a run, and AI lead scoring from the Professional plan. Its [MCP connector](https://www.apollo.io/product/mcp) lets Claude and ChatGPT work on an Apollo account.

### Who is Apollo.io for?

Apollo is for B2B sales and marketing teams that prospect and send outreach themselves. Its [pricing page FAQ](https://www.apollo.io/pricing) says the Free plan suits exploring Apollo and early-stage founders. Basic suits individual sellers who do regular outbound. Professional suits full-time reps who need more credits, AI features and call recording. Teams that need custom credit volumes, SSO or advanced security are sent to a Custom plan. The same page lists roles such as sales reps, sales leaders, RevOps, marketers and developers.

The [SalesHive review](https://saleshive.com/vendors/apollo-io) adds a view from outside. SalesHive is a B2B sales agency with its own platform, so it has a stake in the category. It recommends Apollo for teams with an SDR or inside sales function. It does not recommend it for mainly B2C or local-service sellers, for teams that need very precise data in a narrow region, or for teams that only need a light email sequencer.

## How do people use Apollo.io day to day?

Most people use Apollo in a loop: build a list, reveal contacts, send outreach, call, and sync the results. Each step below is a feature on [Apollo's pricing page](https://www.apollo.io/pricing), with the plan limits that apply.

1. **Filter for your buyers.** Pick titles, industries, company sizes and places. Free has basic filters. Basic and above add advanced filters, and intent topics rise from 1 on Free to 6 on Basic and Professional and 12 on Organization.
2. **Select and save records.** A record selection limit caps how many people you can pick at once: 25 on Free, 1,000 on Basic, 2,500 on Professional and 10,000 on Organization.
3. **Reveal emails first.** A phone number costs eight times an email, so ask for phones only for people you plan to call.
4. **Send sequences.** Free allows 2 sequences per team, one mailbox per user, Gmail only, and 250 emails a day. Basic allows unlimited sequences but the same 250 a day. Professional and Organization have no daily send cap, more mailboxes and A/Z testing. Basic and above include a deliverability suite and email warmup.
5. **Call.** The US dialer comes with paid plans and uses 1 credit per 30 seconds. An Advanced Dialer add-on with parallel and power dialing costs $119 per team per month billed annually, or $149 billed monthly.
6. **Sync and track.** Contacts and activity sync to Salesforce, HubSpot or Pipedrive. Apollo's deal tools track meetings and conversations, and reports show what works.

Other uses skip outreach. Teams enrich a CSV or CRM export, identify companies that visit their website (20 a month on Free, 100 on paid plans), or connect Apollo to Claude or ChatGPT. For the cold email side of the loop, see our [cold email guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/cold-email/).

## What do you get on each Apollo.io plan?

Apollo has four self-serve plans, Free, Basic, Professional and Organization, plus Custom plans by quote. The prices below are per seat per month, as shown on [Apollo's pricing page](https://www.apollo.io/pricing) in both billing views, checked October 16, 2026. They exclude tax. Our [Apollo pricing guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/apollo-pricing/) has the full plan table, add-ons and cost per contact.

| Plan | Billed yearly / monthly | Credits per seat | What the step adds |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Free | $0 | 75 a month | 2 sequences, basic filters, 25-record selection, API access, Chrome extension |
| Basic | $49 / $65 | 2,500 a month (30,000 a year) | Unlimited sequences, advanced filters, US dialer, waterfall enrichment, CRM integrations, deliverability suite |
| Professional | $79 / $99 | 4,000 a month (48,000 a year) | A/Z testing, no daily send cap, AI lead scoring, 4,000 minutes of call recording |
| Organization | $119 / annual only; 3 seats minimum | 6,000 a month (72,000 a year) | 12 intent topics, 500 workflows, 8,000 minutes of call recording, 10,000-record selection |
| Custom | By quote | Custom volumes | Custom credits, SSO and advanced security, per Apollo's FAQ |

Annual billing saves 24% on Apollo's toggle, but you pay for the year up front. Organization shows $149 in the monthly view and is marked Annual Only. Every seat on an account must be on the same plan. Basic and Professional offer a 14-day trial with 75 credits. Add-ons such as the Advanced Dialer and Inbound cost extra, and Apollo labels them introductory pricing that may change.

## How do Apollo.io credits work?

Apollo credits are the currency for revealing contact data and using some features. An email costs 1 credit and a phone number costs 8, per [Apollo's pricing page](https://www.apollo.io/pricing) and its [credits page](https://www.apollo.io/pricing/about-credits). Credits are pooled across your whole team.

| Action | Credits | What to know |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Email | 1 | Personal, business or both; charged only for emails Apollo can verify |
| Phone number | 8 | Mobile, direct dial or extension; every verified number costs the same |
| Enrich data | 1 to 8 | Adds data to contact and company records |
| AI research | 1 per run | Research on prospects and filters |
| US dialer | 1 per 30 seconds | International calls vary by region |
| Waterfall lookup | Email 1 to 4; phone 8 to 25 typically | Can pass 20 for email and 45 for phone; some vendors charge even with no result |

The first five rows come from Apollo's pricing and credits pages. The waterfall ranges come from [Apollo's API pricing page](https://docs.apollo.io/docs/api-pricing), which also says people enrichment costs 1 credit plus 8 when a mobile comes back, and charges only when data is found.

These rules decide what you really pay:

- **Credits arrive up front.** Per the pricing FAQ, they are granted at the start of each billing cycle. Annual plans get the whole year on day one.
- **Credits expire.** They reset each cycle and do not roll over, including add-on credits you bought.
- **Add-ons renew.** Extra credits are charged at once and renew every cycle until you set the slider back to zero.
- **Admins can cap users.** Per-user caps stop one rep from draining the shared pool.
- **Refunds are narrow.** As our [Apollo phone number guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/apollo-phone-numbers/) reports from Apollo's help center, a bounced email can earn a credit back, but wrong mobile numbers cannot.

To price one contact, divide the seat price by the seat's credits. Basic billed yearly is $588 for 30,000 credits, about $0.02 a credit. An email costs about $0.02 and a phone number about $0.16. Billed monthly, Basic is $65 for 2,500 credits, so an email costs $0.026 and a phone number $0.21. These rates assume you spend every credit. Figure 2 shows why that matters.

**Figure 2: How two reps use one Apollo Basic seat in a month.** Two bars show how one Apollo Basic seat, with 2,500 credits a month, is used by two different reps. An email-led rep who reveals 400 emails and 30 phone numbers uses 640 credits, and 1,860 expire unused. A phone-led rep who reveals 100 emails and 275 phone numbers uses 2,300 credits, and 200 expire. An email costs 1 credit and a phone number 8, and unused credits expire at the end of the billing cycle.

*Two illustrative workloads on one Basic seat. Credits are in the pool at 1 per email and 8 per phone number, and unused credits expire at the end of the billing cycle. Our arithmetic from [Apollo pricing](https://www.apollo.io/pricing) and [Apollo credits](https://www.apollo.io/pricing/about-credits), checked October 16, 2026.*

## What are Apollo.io's limits and common complaints?

Apollo's main limits are credits that expire, plans that renew by default, usage rules, and mixed reviews on data and support. Each point below has a source.

- **Data quality is mixed.** Apollo's [data page](https://www.apollo.io/product/data) claims 98% email accuracy and gives no method. The [SalesHive review](https://saleshive.com/vendors/apollo-io) says accuracy varies, especially for phone numbers and some emails, which causes bounces and extra checking. We found no independent test that settles it, so check a sample of your own list. Our [email bounce rate guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/email-bounce-rate/) shows what to watch.
- **Reviews split by site.** [Trustpilot](https://www.trustpilot.com/review/apollo.io) shows 3.1 out of 5 from about 1,370 reviews, with 46% five-star and 36% one-star. Its AI summary of recent reviews cites hard-to-reach support, sudden account lockouts and rigid billing. Apollo's own pricing page shows 4.7 out of 5 from 9,690 reviews and does not name the site. Scores differ by site, so read the written reviews.
- **Contracts renew.** Apollo's [Terms of Service](https://www.apollo.io/terms), last updated August 10, 2026, say subscriptions renew automatically unless you give notice at least 30 days before the term ends. Fees are non-cancelable, non-refundable and cannot be lowered during the term, and Apollo can change the fee at renewal. Monthly billing is month to month, but cancellations take effect at the end of the term.
- **Downgrades are not refunded.** The pricing FAQ says a downgrade applies at once, with no refund for unused time or the price difference.
- **Credits expire.** A seat that uses half its credits pays twice as much per contact.
- **Internal use only.** The pricing FAQ says plans are for internal business use. Powering an external product, sharing data with customers or reselling needs a separate agreement. The Terms also bar using contact data to train AI models, other than your own internal ones.

## Is Apollo.io legit, and how does it get its data?

Yes, Apollo.io is a real, venture-backed company. It is also a data broker, so your details may be in its database. Its [privacy policy](https://www.apollo.io/privacy-policy) says it operates as a registered business-to-business data broker and names three ways data comes in. Its data page adds a fourth.

- **Public and third-party sources.** Public websites, professional directories, government sources and vetted third-party data providers.
- **Customer contributions.** Contacts that customers submit. Apollo says customers acknowledge it may use them to grow, enrich and verify its Contributor Database, which is made available to other customers. Its [credits page](https://www.apollo.io/pricing/about-credits) calls this a data contributor network.
- **Email and calendar access.** When a user authorizes Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, Apollo may collect email headers, message content and meeting details, depending on the services enabled.
- **Waterfall partners.** Its data page says waterfall enrichment combines 20+ sources.

Check what your team connects before you turn on mailbox or calendar sync.

### How do you opt out of Apollo.io?

Go to Apollo's [Privacy Center](https://www.apollo.io/privacy-center) and use the opt-out request button. Apollo says your profile is removed from its products as soon as possible, and it keeps a suppression list so the profile is not added again. You can also email privacy@apollo.io to opt out of sale and sharing. The Global Privacy Control browser signal does not remove you from the database, per the policy. You can ask to be removed from Enrich.chat at [enrich.chat/opt-out/](https://enrich.chat/opt-out/).

Apollo's privacy center says it is ISO 27001 and SOC 2 certified, and its home page lists GDPR and CCPA. Those are Apollo's own statements. Its data FAQ says customers must make sure their own use follows the privacy laws that apply to them. That includes calling and email rules: see our [TCPA and B2B cold calling](https://enrich.chat/blog/tcpa-b2b-cold-calling/) guide. This is general information, not legal advice.

## When is another tool a better fit than Apollo.io?

Another tool fits better when your work is not "reps in one app." Figure 3 sorts the choice by who does the work and what you need.

**Figure 3: Which tool fits which job.** A two by two grid sorts tools by who does the work and what you need. For reps working in an app who need outreach tools in the same app: Apollo, with sequences, a dialer and CRM sync, priced per seat. For an agent or your own code that needs outreach tools: Apollo MCP or API on your Apollo seat and credits. For reps in an app who need contact data only: browser extension tools such as Lusha, Kaspr and Hunter. For an agent or your own code that needs contact data only: Enrich.chat, through a plain API or MCP with monthly credit plans and no seats.

*A way to shortlist tools by who does the work and what you need. Our reading of Apollo's public pages and our guides to the other tools. Sources: [Apollo pricing](https://www.apollo.io/pricing), [Apollo MCP docs](https://docs.apollo.io/docs/apollo-mcp), [Enrich.chat pricing](https://enrich.chat/pricing/), checked October 16, 2026.*

- **An AI agent or app needs contact data.** Apollo's plans are for internal use, and an agent runs on an Apollo seat and its credits. A credit-plan API with unlimited seats fits better. See our [Apollo alternatives](https://enrich.chat/alternatives/apollo/).
- **You need intent data and org charts at enterprise scale.** ZoomInfo sells them by quote. Read [Apollo vs ZoomInfo](https://enrich.chat/compare/apollo-vs-zoominfo/) and [what is ZoomInfo](https://enrich.chat/blog/what-is-zoominfo/).
- **You want to build enrichment across many providers.** Clay is a table-based workflow builder: [Clay vs Apollo](https://enrich.chat/compare/clay-vs-apollo/).
- **You work from LinkedIn search.** [Apollo vs LinkedIn Sales Navigator](https://enrich.chat/compare/apollo-vs-linkedin-sales-navigator/) shows what each does and costs.
- **You mostly need phone numbers in a browser.** Lusha charges fewer credits per phone, but its credits cost more. See [Apollo vs Lusha](https://enrich.chat/compare/apollo-vs-lusha/) and [what is Lusha](https://enrich.chat/blog/what-is-lusha/).

### When is Apollo.io the better choice?

Apollo is the better choice when your reps run outreach where they find leads. It also wins in a few narrower cases:

- You mostly reveal emails. At 1 credit, an email is about $0.02 on annual plans if you use every credit.
- You want a free plan to test with: 75 credits a month, with no time limit, per Apollo's pricing FAQ.
- You already use Salesforce, HubSpot or Pipedrive and want Apollo to feed it.
- You want sequences, a dialer and a Chrome extension under one login.

## How can an AI agent get Apollo-style contacts with Enrich.chat?

Enrich.chat is a plain HTTPS API and MCP server that returns people, work emails, mobile numbers, company profiles and tech stacks to an AI agent or app. Your agent reads [enrich.chat/agents.md](https://enrich.chat/agents.md), or you add the MCP server at `https://enrich.chat/mcp`. The [install page](https://enrich.chat/install/) has the steps. You get 10 free lookups a day with no signup. Try this prompt:

```text
Use www.enrich.chat to find 15 heads of marketing at US ecommerce companies with 20 to 200 employees. For each one, show the work email and its status, plus the company's tech stack. Mark anyone you cannot find as not found, and tell me the total credits_used.
```

The calls map to common Apollo jobs. `/v1/search` finds people from a plain-English description, with filters such as title, seniority, industry and company size. `/v1/person` returns a work email and mobile from a LinkedIn URL, an email, or a name and company. `/v1/company` and `/v1/company/tech` return a company profile and a tech stack. Each work email comes back as verified, catch_all or unknown. Treat every contact as a strong lead, not a guarantee. Enrich.chat never logs in to LinkedIn.

A work email costs 10 credits and a mobile 250. A lookup that finds nothing costs 0 credits. Take 500 work emails and 100 mobiles. On Apollo that is 1,300 credits, which one Basic seat covers for $65 a month billed monthly, or $49 billed yearly. On Enrich.chat it is 30,000 credits, which fits the Growth plan at $29 a month, with unlimited seats and no annual contract. The comparison shifts with your seat count and with how much of Apollo's outreach tooling you use. See [pricing](https://enrich.chat/pricing/), or try one lookup in the free [LinkedIn email and phone finder](https://enrich.chat/tools/linkedin-email-finder/).

Enrich.chat is not a swap for the whole Apollo app. It has two honest gaps:

- **No sequencing, dialer or Chrome extension.** You send email and place calls in another tool.
- **No visual table of leads to browse.** You search in plain English or with the free [AI lead list builder](https://enrich.chat/tools/lead-list-builder/). SDKs are planned, so for now you call the HTTPS API or the MCP server.

Our [data API for AI agents](https://enrich.chat/agents/) page lists what is included. If you plan to call Apollo from code instead, read the [Apollo API guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/apollo-api/) first.

Annual plans receive the whole year of credits on day one.

### Is Apollo.io legit?

Yes. Apollo.io is run by ZenLeads, Inc. in San Francisco, was founded in 2015, and raised a $100 million Series D in August 2023, per [SiliconANGLE](https://siliconangle.com/2023/08/29/sales-intelligence-startup-apollo-now-worth-1-6b-100m-round/). Reviews are mixed: [Trustpilot](https://www.trustpilot.com/review/apollo.io) shows 3.1 out of 5.

### What is the difference between Apollo.io and Apollo GraphQL?

They are unrelated companies. Apollo.io sells a B2B sales platform with contact data, credits and email sequences. Apollo GraphQL sells [GraphOS](https://www.apollographql.com/), a platform for building on a company's existing APIs and systems, and its home page does not mention Apollo.io. If a guide discusses GraphQL schemas, it is not about Apollo.io's sales tools.
