# What is Crunchbase? What it holds, where the data comes from, what it costs and what it leaves out

Crunchbase is a database of companies, funding and investors. Here is what is inside it, how the data is gathered, what the plans cost and the step it does not cover.

By Enrich.chat Editorial. Updated October 16, 2026.

**Short answer:** Crunchbase is a database of companies, funding rounds, investors, acquisitions and leaders. It began in 2007 as [TechCrunch's startup directory](https://techcrunch.com/2009/02/19/the-techcrunch-2008-year-in-review/), and [Crunchbase says it covers 4M+ private companies](https://about.crunchbase.com/products/crunchbase-pro). It has a free account, and [Pro costs $49 a month billed annually in year one](https://about.crunchbase.com/products/pricing) or $99 billed monthly (checked October 16, 2026).

## Key takeaways

- Crunchbase began in 2007 as TechCrunch's startup directory and has been a separate private company since 2015, per Wikipedia and TechCrunch.
- Crunchbase says five sources feed it: 4,000+ venture partners and 600K contributors, 80M+ users' activity, ingestion systems, 1,000+ news outlets and filings, and analysts. We found no independent audit.
- A free account has usage limits. Pro is $49 a month billed annually in year one ($79 list) or $99 monthly, Business starts at $199, and API access is by quote (checked October 16, 2026).
- The pricing page ticks People and contacts on Pro and Business but does not say whether emails or phones are included, so ask before you plan around it.
- Enrich.chat takes a company website from a Crunchbase list and returns a profile, people and work emails with a status. It has no rounds or investor data, only the latest funding stage where it has one.

## What is Crunchbase?

Crunchbase is a database of companies, best known for startup funding, investors, acquisitions and leaders. It began in 2007, [per Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crunchbase), as a list of the startups TechCrunch wrote about. TechCrunch's [2008 year-in-review post](https://techcrunch.com/2009/02/19/the-techcrunch-2008-year-in-review/) calls it an open directory of startups, people and investors, run as a moderated wiki that anyone can add to.

It is now a separate company. [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crunchbase) lists Crunchbase, Inc. as its owner since 2015, and [TechCrunch reported](https://techcrunch.com/2015/09/22/aolverizon-completes-spinout-of-crunchbase-funded-by-emergence-capital/) that AOL and Verizon spun it out that September, with Emergence Capital as the lead investor. [OMERS Ventures](https://omersventures.com/news/crunchbase-crunches-its-way-to-fresh-new-capital) says Crunchbase announced a $50 million Series D on July 20, 2022, led by Alignment Growth. So Crunchbase is a private company that sells data about other companies, private and public. Figure 1 shows the milestones.

**Figure 1: Crunchbase from 2007 to 2026.** A timeline of Crunchbase in five steps. In 2007 it began as TechCrunch's startup list. On September 22, 2015 AOL and Verizon spun it out with Emergence Capital as lead investor. On September 12, 2016 Crunchbase Pro launched at $29 a month. On July 20, 2022 it announced a $50 million Series D led by Alignment Growth. On October 16, 2026 its pricing page lists free, Pro and Business plans, with API access by quote.

*Crunchbase milestones. The 2007 start is dated by Wikipedia and TechCrunch, and the 2026 row is the pricing page read on October 16, 2026. Sources: [TechCrunch 2009](https://techcrunch.com/2009/02/19/the-techcrunch-2008-year-in-review/), [TechCrunch 2015](https://techcrunch.com/2015/09/22/aolverizon-completes-spinout-of-crunchbase-funded-by-emergence-capital/), [TechCrunch 2016](https://techcrunch.com/2016/09/12/crunchbase-pro-brings-new-search-and-analysis-features-for-power-users/), [OMERS Ventures](https://omersventures.com/news/crunchbase-crunches-its-way-to-fresh-new-capital), [Crunchbase pricing](https://about.crunchbase.com/products/pricing).*

Crunchbase sells that data in four ways: a web app for one person or a team, a connection for AI assistants called MCP, an API, and data licenses. Its [pricing page](https://about.crunchbase.com/products/pricing) now pitches the data to agents, workflows and apps as well as to people.

## What data does Crunchbase hold?

Crunchbase says it provides six types of data: financials, firmographics, point-in-time events, heat and growth scores, insights and predictions. Its [Data page](https://about.crunchbase.com/data) defines each one.

- **Financials.** Funding rounds, revenue ranges and key financial milestones.
- **Firmographics.** Industry, legal status, employee count and other facts about a company. Our [firmographic data guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/firmographic-data/) explains the term.
- **Point-in-time events.** Acquisitions, funding rounds, investments, fund formations and IPOs.
- **Heat and growth scores.** Proprietary momentum scores based on signals such as news activity, funding trends and user engagement.
- **Insights.** AI-powered summaries of company and market shifts.
- **Predictions.** Forecasts of funding, growth, acquisitions, IPOs, closures and layoffs.

On scale, Crunchbase's [Pro page](https://about.crunchbase.com/products/crunchbase-pro) says it delivers 30M+ verified data updates a year across 4M+ private companies. Its Data page says its models anticipated 84% of real-world funding events before they happened. Those are Crunchbase's claims, and we have not tested them.

The search menu on the pricing page shows the record types you can search: companies, contacts, investors, funding rounds, acquisitions, people, events, schools and hubs. Underneath, the API sells the same data in packages. The [Fundamentals docs](https://data.crunchbase.com/docs/fundamentals) list company profiles with descriptions, websites, founding dates and locations. They also list employee counts and people details such as titles, backgrounds, degrees, advisors and board members. The advanced tier adds round-by-round funding, valuations, revenue ranges and acquisition history. Our [Crunchbase API pricing guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/crunchbase-api-pricing/) explains how those packages are sold.

## How does Crunchbase get its data, and can you trust it?

Crunchbase says five sources feed its data: market experts, user engagement signals, its own ingestion systems, trusted external sources and analyst validation. Figure 2 shows each source and the scale Crunchbase gives for it.

**Figure 2: The five sources behind a Crunchbase record.** A flow with four inputs and one review step. Market experts supply input from more than 4,000 venture partners and 600,000 active contributors. Engagement signals come from more than 80 million users. Ingestion systems collect data automatically. News and filings come from more than 1,000 outlets. All four feed analyst validation, which uses AI grading and human review, and the result is a Crunchbase company record. The numbers are Crunchbase's own claims.

*Crunchbase's own description of its five data sources and their scale. The numbers are Crunchbase's claims, and we have not verified them. Source: [Crunchbase Data page](https://about.crunchbase.com/data), read October 16, 2026.*

The first source is the oldest. Contributors wrote the first records, and Crunchbase still counts more than 600,000 active contributors and 4,000 venture partners among its inputs. Wikipedia now describes its content as a mix of live company data, artificial intelligence and community contributions.

Crunchbase adds that it combines AI grading with human review and benchmarks its data against outside sources. We found no independent audit of its accuracy, so treat the accuracy figures as Crunchbase's own. A sensible habit is to check any single field that drives a decision, such as a round size or a headcount, against the company's own announcement or a filing.

User reviews are mixed. [Trustpilot](https://www.trustpilot.com/review/crunchbase.com) shows 1.4 out of 5 from 51 reviews, 88% of them one star. Reviewers write about trial billing, renewals, support and profile edits. Trustpilot notes the company has not invited reviews, so the sample may not be typical. Crunchbase's own [GTM page](https://about.crunchbase.com/gtm-teams) shows 4.5 out of 5 on G2, a site that blocked our automated read, so we could not check it.

## What does Crunchbase cost in 2026?

Crunchbase has a free account, Pro at $49 a month billed annually in year one, Business from $199 a month, and Custom Data Solutions by quote. The table lists what Crunchbase's [pricing page](https://about.crunchbase.com/products/pricing) showed on October 16, 2026.

*Crunchbase plans, from its pricing page, checked October 16, 2026.*

| Plan | Price | Built for | What the page lists |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Free account | $0 | One person | Company profiles, search results, AI research and MCP, with usage limits |
| Pro | $49 a month billed annually in year one ($79 crossed out), or $99 billed monthly | One person | 7-day trial, 2,000 export rows a month, up to 1,000 results a search, MCP at base usage |
| Business | From $199 a month, billed annually | Teams of 2 or more | 5,000 export rows a month, Salesforce, HubSpot, Zapier and Outreach links, more MCP use |
| Custom Data Solutions | Custom, by quote | Organizations and applications | Scaled API access, Snowflake or Databricks delivery, current and historical signals |

Crunchbase's [Data Boost](https://about.crunchbase.com/data-boost) add-on gives Pro and Business partner filters such as tech stack and IT budget for $360 a year. Our [Crunchbase API pricing guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/crunchbase-api-pricing/) covers the API, contract terms and cost per record, and the [Crunchbase alternatives](https://enrich.chat/alternatives/crunchbase/) page compares eight other tools.

Some directories show an older price. [Salesforge's directory entry](https://www.salesforge.ai/directory/sales-tools/crunchbase) lists Pro at $29 a month. That is the price [TechCrunch reported for Pro's launch](https://techcrunch.com/2016/09/12/crunchbase-pro-brings-new-search-and-analysis-features-for-power-users/) in September 2016, not what Crunchbase shows today.

One more check: the pricing page's comparison table ticks forecasts for both Pro and Business, while the [Pro product page](https://about.crunchbase.com/products/crunchbase-pro) says Business adds predictions. If one feature decides the purchase, ask Crunchbase which plan includes it.

## Who uses Crunchbase, and for what?

Crunchbase's Pro page names four groups: investors, go-to-market teams, analysts and founders. Each uses the same records for a different job.

- **Investors** read funding history and investor data, run due diligence and watch for risk signals.
- **Sales and marketing teams** build target lists by funding stage, headcount and growth, and watch for new rounds. Crunchbase's [GTM page](https://about.crunchbase.com/gtm-teams) pitches funding and growth signals as a way to reach accounts with buying power. Our [sales signals guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/sales-signals/) covers the wider idea.
- **Analysts** compare companies, sectors and competitors. Crunchbase's [MCP docs](https://data.crunchbase.com/docs/mcp-overview) give an example of screening US fintech companies by round and date.
- **Founders** research their market and look for investors that fund their stage.

A January 2024 guide on [Aloa's blog](https://aloa.co/blog/crunchbase) groups startup uses under sales and marketing, customer relationship management and partnership development. Aloa is a software services firm, and its feature list predates Crunchbase's current plans, so check it against the pricing page.

## What does Crunchbase leave out?

Crunchbase answers questions about companies and money. It says less about the step after that, which is who to contact and how. These are the gaps we found in its public pages.

- **Contact fields are not spelled out.** The pricing page ticks "People and contacts" for Pro and Business but does not say whether that includes email addresses or phone numbers. The Fundamentals docs list titles, backgrounds, degrees, advisors and board members and name neither. Ask Crunchbase what your plan returns before you plan around it.
- **Exports are capped and made by hand.** Pro allows 2,000 export rows a month and Business 5,000. The [Terms of Service](https://about.crunchbase.com/terms-of-service) bar crawling, scraping and automated export, so the export button is the route, not a script.
- **Moving data into other tools is limited.** The same terms bar copying or storing a significant portion of the content in a third-party tool such as ChatGPT, except as the service permits or through authorized MCP access. The [MCP Server Terms](https://about.crunchbase.com/terms-of-service/mcp-server-terms), effective September 30, 2026, allow internal business purposes and bar giving raw data or outputs to unauthorized third parties.
- **The API is sold by quote.** The pricing page lists scaled API access under Custom Data Solutions at custom pricing.
- **MCP access is described two ways.** The pricing page says MCP is included with Pro and Business, with usage limits. The developer docs say it is bought per workspace, with a seat for each user. Ask sales which rule applies to you.

None of this is a flaw in a research tool. It means Crunchbase is the start of a lead workflow, not the whole of one.

## When is Crunchbase the better choice?

Crunchbase is the better choice when your question is about funding, investors or company momentum. Enrich.chat holds only the latest funding stage, with no rounds, investors or acquisitions, and a contact database rarely does more.

- **Funding history for one researcher.** Pro costs $49 a month billed annually in year one, or $99 billed monthly, with a 7-day trial.
- **Investors and acquisitions in one place.** The Data page lists funding rounds, acquisitions, investments, fund formations and IPOs.
- **Scores and forecasts.** Heat scores, growth scores and predictions are Crunchbase's own products. We did not test them.
- **Research inside an AI assistant.** The MCP overview lists Claude, ChatGPT, VS Code with GitHub Copilot and Perplexity as supported tools, with each person signed in to their own Crunchbase account.
- **Licensed data inside a product.** Custom Data Solutions is the route Crunchbase offers for applications.

Look elsewhere in three cases. If PitchBook is on your shortlist, read [what PitchBook is](https://enrich.chat/blog/what-is-pitchbook/), [PitchBook pricing](https://enrich.chat/blog/pitchbook-pricing/), [Crunchbase vs PitchBook](https://enrich.chat/compare/crunchbase-vs-pitchbook/) and the [PitchBook alternatives](https://enrich.chat/alternatives/pitchbook/). If you want funding fields through an API with public prices, see the [Crunchbase alternatives](https://enrich.chat/alternatives/crunchbase/) and the [best company data APIs](https://enrich.chat/blog/best-company-data-apis/). And if you need a work email for a named person, you need a contact data step, which is the last section.

## How does Enrich.chat pick up where a Crunchbase list ends?

Enrich.chat is the next step after Crunchbase, not a replacement for it. You give it a company website from your list. It returns the company profile, the people in the roles you name, and a work email with a status for each. It has no funding rounds, investors, acquisitions or news, only the latest funding stage where it has one, so keep Crunchbase for those. Enrich.chat is ours, so the gaps are listed below.

### What does the loop look like for one company?

Say your Crunchbase list shows a small logistics startup that just raised a seed round, and its profile gives a website. Figure 3 shows three calls from there. An agent can make them from one prompt, or you can add the MCP server at `enrich.chat/mcp`, which needs no key, with the steps on the [install page](https://enrich.chat/install/). Everything below is made up and uses `example.com`.

**Figure 3: From a Crunchbase list to the people at the company.** A four step loop for one company. A Crunchbase list gives a company website. The company lookup returns a profile for 5 credits. The search returns up to three founders and growth leads for 15 credits. The person lookup returns a work email with a status for each of two people for 20 credits. One company uses 40 credits in all.

# 3. Get a work email and its status for each person you want to contact.

{
  "found": true,

    "status": "verified"
  },
  "credits_used": 10,
  "free_lookups_remaining": 7
}
```
On the free tier, each found call uses one of the day's 10 free lookups, so the counter above falls from 9 to 7. With a paid plan's key, responses show `credits_left` instead. A call that finds nothing uses 0 credits and no free lookup. The `status` on each email is `verified`, `catch_all` or `unknown`. A `catch_all` status means the domain accepts every address, so the mailbox cannot be confirmed. Treat every contact as a strong lead, not a guarantee.
Search also takes filters such as `seniority`, `title`, `industry` and `employees_min`, and returns up to 25 people a page, with a cursor for the next page. Add `with_email=true` to include the email, with the status `unknown`, or call `/v1/person` to get the status. Go at about one request a second. The [company enrichment API](https://enrich.chat/api/company-enrichment/) and [people search API](https://enrich.chat/api/people-search/) pages list every field, and the free [lead list builder](https://enrich.chat/tools/lead-list-builder/) runs one search from your browser.
### What does a month of this loop cost?
Assume each company uses one company lookup, one search that returns 3 people, and 2 work emails found. That is 40 credits a company, and nothing is used when a lookup finds nothing. Your counts will differ, so treat the table as arithmetic, not a forecast.
| Companies a month | Credits | Plan that covers it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 200 | 8,000 | Growth, $29 a month |
| 2,000, a full Pro export | 80,000 | Growth, $29 a month |
| 5,000, a full Business export | 200,000 | Scale, $90 a month |
A plan is a fixed monthly bill, so the 200-company job uses only part of the Growth plan. You still need a Crunchbase plan for the list: its pricing page shows Pro, with 2,000 export rows a month, at $49 to $99 a month. See [Enrich.chat pricing](https://enrich.chat/pricing/) for every plan. On the free tier, one company takes up to four lookups (one company, one search, two people), so a free day covers about two companies.
### What does Enrich.chat not do?
- **No round-by-round funding data.** It has no funding rounds, investors, acquisitions or news. It returns a revenue band, a founded year and the latest funding stage where it has them, not exact figures. It cannot tell you who invested or how much was raised.
- **Websites, not names.** A company lookup takes a website, a LinkedIn company page or a company ID. A company name alone is not supported, so your Crunchbase export needs the website column. Enrich.chat does not read Crunchbase profiles or IDs.
- **Jobs and searches have caps.** A search returns 25 people a page and pages on up to 1,000, and a batch call takes up to 25 per call. The dashboard saves lists and exports CSV or Excel, and its [Bulk enrich](https://enrich.chat/features/bulk-enrichment/) can run as a [background job](https://enrich.chat/features/background-jobs/) that keeps going after you close the tab. A job holds at most 5,000 rows and its results are kept 30 days.
- **No outreach tools.** There is no Chrome extension, CRM app, sequencing, dialer or intent data. SDKs are planned, and plain HTTPS works today.
### What should you check before you move a list?
The only Crunchbase data in the loop is a company website, but the Crunchbase terms above still apply to the list you start from. Check what your plan or order form lets you pass to another service, or start from your own account list or CRM instead. People can remove their data at [enrich.chat/opt-out/](https://enrich.chat/opt-out/), and you are responsible for the rules that apply to you, such as TCPA, CAN-SPAM and GDPR. Accounts are covered by our [terms](https://enrich.chat/terms/). This is not legal advice.
To run the loop on your own list, paste this into ChatGPT, Claude or Cursor:
```text
Use www.enrich.chat to take the company websites below, which I copied from my own Crunchbase list. For each one, look up the company profile, search for its founders and head of growth, then get a work email and its status for each person. Go at about one request a second, mark misses as not found, flag catch_all emails as risky, add no funding or investor data, and give me the total credits_used: [paste websites, one per line]
```
## Frequently asked questions
### What is Crunchbase used for?
Crunchbase is used to research companies and the money behind them. Investors read funding history and investor data, sales teams build target lists and watch for new rounds, analysts map markets and competitors, and founders look for investors. [Crunchbase's Pro page](https://about.crunchbase.com/products/crunchbase-pro) names those four groups. It is a research product, so a verified email for a named person usually needs a contact data API as the next step.
### Is Crunchbase free?
Partly. [Crunchbase's pricing page](https://about.crunchbase.com/products/pricing) says a free account gives company profiles, search results, AI research and MCP, with usage limits. Pro costs $49 a month billed annually in year one or $99 billed monthly, with a 7-day trial and 2,000 export rows a month. Business starts at $199 a month, and API access comes through sales. We checked these on October 16, 2026.
### Is Crunchbase a private company?
Yes. [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crunchbase) lists Crunchbase, Inc. as the owner since 2015, and [TechCrunch reported](https://techcrunch.com/2015/09/22/aolverizon-completes-spinout-of-crunchbase-funded-by-emergence-capital/) that AOL and Verizon spun it out that September. [OMERS Ventures](https://omersventures.com/news/crunchbase-crunches-its-way-to-fresh-new-capital) says Crunchbase announced a $50 million Series D on July 20, 2022, led by Alignment Growth. The company is separate from the profiles inside it, which cover private and public companies.
### Where does Crunchbase get its data?
Crunchbase says five sources feed it: input from more than 4,000 venture partners and 600,000 active contributors, aggregated activity from more than 80 million users, its own ingestion systems, more than 1,000 news outlets and government filings, and a team of analysts who review the data. These figures come from [Crunchbase's Data page](https://about.crunchbase.com/data). We found no independent audit of its accuracy.
### What is a heat score on Crunchbase?
A heat score is one of Crunchbase's proprietary momentum scores. [Its Data page](https://about.crunchbase.com/data) says heat and growth scores draw on signals such as news activity, funding trends and user engagement, and are meant to show emerging companies and accelerating sectors. [The Pro page](https://about.crunchbase.com/products/crunchbase-pro) says heat scores help you reach rising companies at the right moment. Those pages do not publish the formula.
### Does Crunchbase give you email addresses and phone numbers?
Crunchbase does not spell it out. The [pricing page](https://about.crunchbase.com/products/pricing) ticks People and contacts for Pro and Business but does not say whether that includes emails or phones, and the [Fundamentals docs](https://data.crunchbase.com/docs/fundamentals) list titles, backgrounds, degrees, advisors and board members without naming either. Ask Crunchbase what your plan returns. Enrich.chat returns people and work emails from a company website, plus the latest funding stage where it has one, but no rounds or investors.
