# What is PitchBook? Data, products, price and free ways to get company data

PitchBook sells private-market data to investors and dealmakers. Here is what is in it, what it costs, who it suits, and what to use when you only need company profiles and contacts.

By Enrich.chat Editorial. Updated October 16, 2026.

**Short answer:** PitchBook is a subscription database of private-market data: companies, deals, investors, funds and the people behind them. Morningstar owns it, and its [2025 annual report](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1289419/000128941926000013/morn-20251231.htm) shows $671.8 million of PitchBook revenue and 113,451 licensed users. PitchBook [publishes no price](https://web.archive.org/web/20260728165003/https://pitchbook.com/pricing); the lowest sourced seat price is $7,000 a year, from 2022.

## Key takeaways

- PitchBook is Morningstar's private-market data business. Its 10-K reports $671.8 million of revenue in 2025, about 10,200 client accounts and 113,451 licensed users.
- PitchBook publishes no price. Its pricing page says cost depends on seats and firm type. The lowest sourced figures are $7,000 a seat (2022 order forms) and $12,000 for a one-seat plan (self-reported).
- Direct Data (API and Data Feed) and CRM integration are paid add-ons. One competitor reports API packages from about $70,000 a year, on top of a platform licence.
- Free routes exist: a 49-company data sample on AWS, free profile previews, university library access and SEC Form D data sets. All are limited.
- For company profiles, people and work emails from a website, Enrich.chat plans start at $29 a month. It has no deal, valuation or investor data.

## What is PitchBook?

PitchBook is a subscription database of private-market data. It covers companies, deals, investors, funds, limited partners and the people who work at them. Morningstar's [2025 annual report](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1289419/000128941926000013/morn-20251231.htm) calls it a platform for professionals who allocate, deploy or advise on capital. Investors, bankers and corporations use it to find targets, study deals and see who funds whom.

The 2016 filing gives the founding date indirectly: it says PitchBook was founded nine years earlier. In October 2016 Morningstar agreed to pay about $180 million for the stake it did not already own, valuing PitchBook at $225.0 million. PitchBook's trailing 12-month revenue was then $31.1 million, per the [announcement](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1289419/000110465916150147/a16-19902_1ex99d2.htm). In 2025 it was $671.8 million.

## Is a pitch book the same as PitchBook?

No. A pitch book is a document, and PitchBook is a company. The names collide in search, so check which one you mean before you read on.

A pitch book, also spelled pitchbook, is a sales or deal document. [Macabacus](https://macabacus.com/blog/investment-banking-pitch-book) describes an investment bank's pitch book as a sales presentation that shows why the bank is the right adviser for a client. [Slidebean](https://slidebean.com/blog/what-is-a-pitch-book-meaning) describes it as a detailed document on a company's business, with financials, projections and deal terms, and calls a pitch deck the shorter, growth-story version used by startups. [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitchbook) adds that a pitch book is also called a confidential information memorandum. The rest of this page covers PitchBook, the data company.

## What data does PitchBook have, and where does it come from?

PitchBook says it tracks millions of companies, investors, deals, funds and people. The counts below are PitchBook's own claims, not audited figures.

*PitchBook's data page, Internet Archive copy of July 8, 2026. Counts are as PitchBook states them.*

| Dataset | PitchBook's claim | What PitchBook says it holds |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Companies | 10.1M+ | Financial data on private and public companies |
| Investors | 600K+ | Track records and activity |
| Deals | 2.9M+ | Deal histories and multiples |
| Funds | 156K+ | Fund performance across strategies |
| Limited partners | 62K+ | Commitments, mandates and strategies |
| Professionals | 4.7M+ | People to contact and how to connect |
| Service providers | 122K+ | Advisers for a deal |

The counts move between pages. A [PitchBook comparison page](https://web.archive.org/web/20260731010844/https://pitchbook.com/compare/pitchbook-vs-crunchbase) copied three weeks later, on July 31, 2026, says 12M+ companies and 3.1M+ deals. Read headline counts as marketing, and test your own target list in a trial.

On sourcing, PitchBook's data page says its data operations team updates records several times a day from survey requests, regulatory filings and freedom-of-information responses. It also says the team reviews more than a million news events a week. PitchBook's [AI page](https://web.archive.org/web/20260722011816/https://pitchbook.com/products/pitchbooks-ai-capabilities) says an average profile holds more than 200 data points. Morningstar's 10-K adds that PitchBook published more than 2,400 research reports in 2025.

The people data is built for networking among investors and advisers. PitchBook's [people data page](https://web.archive.org/web/20260512161628/https://pitchbook.com/platform-data/professionals) lists career and education histories, board seats, deal roles and conference attendance. It does not say whether work emails or mobile numbers are included, so ask about contact fields before you buy. Our guide to [sales intelligence](https://enrich.chat/blog/what-is-sales-intelligence/) explains how contact data differs from company data.

## What does PitchBook sell, and what costs extra?

PitchBook sells a platform licence by seat, plus paid add-ons. The [pricing page](https://web.archive.org/web/20260728165003/https://pitchbook.com/pricing) says the desktop app, the mobile app, and the Excel and PowerPoint plug-ins and Chrome extension come with it. Figure 1 shows the split.

**Figure 1: What a PitchBook licence covers and what costs extra.** Two columns. Included with a licence: desktop and mobile apps, Excel, PowerPoint and Chrome plug-ins, research and analyst consultation, and data sets by screener. Sold as add-ons: Direct Data (API and data feed), CRM integration, and Lumonic portfolio monitoring. LLM connectors for Claude and ChatGPT are shown as a dashed fourth item because the pages we read state no price or terms.

*What PitchBook says comes with a licence and what it sells on top. The dashed item is a connector product whose price and terms we could not find. Sources: [pricing page](https://web.archive.org/web/20260728165003/https://pitchbook.com/pricing), [platform page](https://web.archive.org/web/20261001113318/https://pitchbook.com/products), [integrations page](https://web.archive.org/web/20260512170522/https://pitchbook.com/products/integrations), [Morningstar 10-K](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1289419/000128941926000013/morn-20251231.htm).*

PitchBook's [integrations page](https://web.archive.org/web/20260512170522/https://pitchbook.com/products/integrations) says Direct Data and CRM integration are premium additions priced by seats and firm type. Its [CRM page](https://web.archive.org/web/20260707194718/https://pitchbook.com/products/crm-integration) lists Salesforce, Microsoft Dynamics, HubSpot, DealCloud and Affinity. PitchBook acquired the portfolio-monitoring tool Lumonic in 2025, per the 10-K.

The 10-K also lists AI features inside the platform: PitchBook Navigator for natural-language search, the VC Exit Predictor, and Valuation Estimates for thousands of companies. PitchBook's [data page](https://web.archive.org/web/20260708093912/https://pitchbook.com/data) says its Premium Connector brings its data into LLM tools such as Claude and ChatGPT. Stanford's licence leaves that connector out, so check what your own licence includes.

## How much does PitchBook cost?

PitchBook does not publish a price. Its [pricing page](https://web.archive.org/web/20260728165003/https://pitchbook.com/pricing) shows a request form and says cost depends on how many seats you need and your firm type, plus premium add-ons. Morningstar's [10-K](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1289419/000128941926000013/morn-20251231.htm) says platform pricing is mainly by licensed user, with custom pricing for large enterprises, boutique firms and startups. It says Direct Data is priced by data volume, refresh needs and technical specs.

That leaves reported figures. The table lists every number we found and what it rests on. Read the basis column before you quote one.

*Pages read October 16, 2026. The two Morningstar rows are our arithmetic, not prices.*

One-seat plans reported to Failory are $12,000 to $13,500. Revenue per client account is about $65,900. The API is reported to start near $70,000 a year. PitchBook publishes no price.

*Yearly PitchBook figures on one scale. Blue bars are per user or per seat, grey is per client account and beige is a reported API estimate. The two Morningstar bars divide segment revenue by users or accounts, so they blend every product and are not prices. Treat $7,000 as a 2022 floor. The pricing report that quotes those forms advises budgeting above it for 2026, and it cites Morningstar saying PitchBook seeks price increases at renewal where appropriate. Our [PitchBook pricing guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/pitchbook-pricing/) goes deeper on quotes and negotiation.

### What do PitchBook contracts look like?

PitchBook licences usually renew by default. Morningstar's 10-K says its licence agreements typically run one to three years. The pricing report says the subscription agreement filed with UK buyers renews for one-year terms unless a party gives notice 30 days before expiry, and that fee changes need notice 45 days before the anniversary. Failory's list says only annual licences are offered.

The 10-K puts the revenue renewal rate for the platform and Direct Data together at about 103% in 2025, down from 108% in 2024. Above 100% means renewing accounts spent more in total than a year earlier. Morningstar says the drop mainly reflects softness among corporate clients.

### Is PitchBook worth the cost?

It is for teams that use deal and valuation data every week, and less clearly so for contact lookups. The renewal rate of about 103% suggests that accounts who stay keep expanding. PitchBook's own [free trial page](https://web.archive.org/web/20260928142616/https://pitchbook.com/free-trial) says 86% of surveyed organizations saw a return within a year, from a June 2026 survey of 3,005 users. That is a vendor survey, so weigh it as one. The 10-K adds that licensed users were flat in 2025, with new accounts offset by churn.

## Who is PitchBook for, and who is it not for?

PitchBook is for investment professionals. Its pricing page says it is geared toward them, though it adds that others may find value. The 10-K lists private equity and venture capital firms, asset managers, limited partners, investment banks, private credit investors, corporations and professional service providers as clients.

- **Investors and bankers.** They use deal terms, valuations, fund performance and limited partner data, which are PitchBook's core.
- **Companies raising money.** A [review-your-profile form](https://web.archive.org/web/20260704214219/https://pitchbook.com/request-your-pitchbook-profile) lets companies, investors and limited partners ask to review their profile.
- **Service firms and corporations.** They look up advisers, investors and acquirers. The 10-K notes softness in the corporate segment, especially smaller firms with narrow uses.
- **Sales teams.** PitchBook lists business development as a use case, but the product is built around investors, deals and funds. If your job is selling to companies, see our guides to [ZoomInfo](https://enrich.chat/blog/what-is-zoominfo/) and [B2B data providers](https://enrich.chat/blog/best-b2b-data-providers/).

## Is there a free way to get PitchBook data?

Yes, but each free route is small. The table covers the ones we could verify. None of them replaces a licence for deal work.

*Free routes checked October 16, 2026. PitchBook pages are Internet Archive copies.*

| Route | What you get | The catch |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Free profile previews](https://web.archive.org/web/20260512161638/https://pitchbook.com/profiles) | Search a company, investor, adviser, limited partner, fund or professional and preview the profile | Previews only |
| [Free trial request](https://web.archive.org/web/20260928142616/https://pitchbook.com/free-trial) | A form that leads to a call with PitchBook | PitchBook decides whether a trial fits you |
| [AWS Data Exchange sample](https://aws.amazon.com/marketplace/pp/prodview-kjevwrwcqwszi) | PitchBook's Companies & Deals sample as a CSV file, free, updated daily | 49 companies, no API or scheduled feed, needs an AWS account |
| [University library](https://libguides.stanford.edu/pitchbook) | Full platform for students and staff at schools with a licence | Stanford caps exports at 10 Excel rows a day and 24 a month |
| [SEC Form D data sets](https://www.sec.gov/data-research/sec-markets-data/form-d-data-sets) | Quarterly files from notices of exempt securities offerings | As filed, with no accuracy guarantee from the SEC, and not every company files one |

Do not scrape PitchBook. Stanford's guide warns that PitchBook bans accounts that scrape, including with browser plug-ins or LLMs. Crunchbase also has a free account with usage limits, as our [Crunchbase API pricing guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/crunchbase-api-pricing/) explains. The SEC's Form D page says the data is presented without change from the filings and that the SEC cannot guarantee its accuracy.

## What should you use instead of PitchBook?

It depends on the job. PitchBook is the answer for deal, valuation and fund data. A lighter database may do for funding rounds. For a company profile plus the people and work emails behind a list, you need a contact data tool. Figure 3 maps four needs to a route.

**Figure 3: Which route fits which job.** Four needs and the route for each. Deal terms, valuations, and limited partner and fund data: PitchBook, by quote on an annual licence. Funding rounds in a lighter database or API: Crunchbase and similar tools, with self-serve plans and API by quote. A few funding facts with no budget: free routes such as SEC Form D files and the PitchBook data sample. A company profile, people and work emails by website: Enrich.chat, on credit plans, with no funding rounds or deal data.

*A starting point for choosing a route. Sources: [PitchBook pricing page](https://web.archive.org/web/20260728165003/https://pitchbook.com/pricing), [our Crunchbase API pricing guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/crunchbase-api-pricing/), [Enrich.chat pricing](https://enrich.chat/pricing/).*

PitchBook is often confused with other company data tools that sell something different. The table below says what each one sells, as our guides describe it.

*What each tool mainly sells. Read the linked guide for sources and prices.*

| Tool | Main data | Buyer | Read more |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| PitchBook | Deals, valuations, investors, funds, limited partners | Investors, bankers, advisers | [PitchBook alternatives](https://enrich.chat/alternatives/pitchbook/) |
| Crunchbase | Startup funding rounds and company profiles | Founders, investors, sales teams | [What is Crunchbase](https://enrich.chat/blog/what-is-crunchbase/) |
| ZoomInfo | Business contacts and companies, plus sales software | Sales, marketing and recruiting teams | [What is ZoomInfo](https://enrich.chat/blog/what-is-zoominfo/) |
| D&B Hoovers | Company and corporate-structure data | Sales and risk teams | [D&B Hoovers pricing](https://enrich.chat/blog/dun-and-bradstreet-hoovers-pricing/) |

For funding data, [Crunchbase vs PitchBook](https://enrich.chat/compare/crunchbase-vs-pitchbook/) sets the two side by side, and our [Crunchbase alternatives](https://enrich.chat/alternatives/crunchbase/) page ranks more options. For company fields by API, the [best company data APIs](https://enrich.chat/blog/best-company-data-apis/) guide lists prices. Our [firmographic data guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/firmographic-data/) explains which company fields matter.

## How does Enrich.chat fit next to PitchBook?

Enrich.chat covers the step after you pick companies: a profile by website, the people at the company, and their work emails. It has no deal, valuation or investor data, only the latest funding stage on a profile. A typical loop starts with a list of company websites from PitchBook, Crunchbase or the SEC files above. Your AI agent reads [enrich.chat/agents.md](https://enrich.chat/agents.md), or you add the MCP server at `https://enrich.chat/mcp` (steps on the [install page](https://enrich.chat/install/)). The free tier needs no key.

Here is the loop with a fictional company. Every name and address is made up, and the responses are illustrative. Step 3 is where the email status appears.

One company, two founders and one email use 25 credits and three free lookups. A lookup that finds nothing uses 0 credits. The email status is `verified`, `catch_all` or `unknown`. Treat every contact as a strong lead, not a guarantee.

```text
```

### What does a 200-company list cost on Enrich.chat?

Take 200 companies from a funding list, two founders at each, and one work email per company. That is 5,000 credits a month, which fits the Growth plan at $29 a month. Priced at the plan's own credit rate, the workload uses $1.45. Every plan has unlimited seats, every product and no annual contract. For scale, a reported PitchBook seat of $7,000 a year is about $583 a month. The two buy different things: PitchBook sells deal data and Enrich.chat sells contact and company profiles. See [pricing](https://enrich.chat/pricing/) for the rates.

Enrich.chat has honest gaps next to PitchBook:

- **No funding rounds, deals, valuations or investors.** The company profile returns the latest funding stage with its date where we have it, plus size and revenue bands, a founded year and location, but no round history.
- **A company lookup needs a website.** A LinkedIn company page or a company_id also works, but company names alone are not supported, so keep the website column when you export a list.
- **25 people a page, at most 1,000 per search, about one request a second.** Saved lists are [shared across your team](https://enrich.chat/features/team-workspaces/), and there is no SSO, Chrome extension, CRM app or sequencing.

Check your PitchBook licence before you move exported data into other tools. For more on company and people lookups, see the [company enrichment API](https://enrich.chat/api/company-enrichment/), the [people search API](https://enrich.chat/api/people-search/), our guide to [finding employees of a company](https://enrich.chat/blog/find-employees-of-a-company/), and the free [lead list builder](https://enrich.chat/tools/lead-list-builder/). To turn a CSV of company websites into profiles, use the dashboard's [bulk enrichment](https://enrich.chat/features/bulk-enrichment/), up to 5,000 rows per run, which can run on the server as a [background job](https://enrich.chat/features/background-jobs/).

## When is PitchBook the better choice?

PitchBook is the better choice when your work is deals, funds and valuations, and you can budget for a licence. It fits these cases:

- You need deal terms, valuations, exits, fund performance or limited partner data, which Enrich.chat does not hold.
- You work in Excel or PowerPoint all day, and the free plug-ins fit your workflow.
- You want research and analyst access in the same subscription.
- Your firm already holds a licence, or your university library provides one.

If you only need to turn a list of companies into profiles and contacts, a seat-based deal database is more than the job needs. Start with the free tier, and see our [company data enrichment guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/company-data-enrichment/) for the fields to ask for.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is PitchBook a legitimate company?

Yes. PitchBook is a segment of Morningstar, Inc. (Nasdaq: MORN), which files annual reports with the SEC. Its [2025 Form 10-K](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1289419/000128941926000013/morn-20251231.htm) lists $671.8 million of PitchBook revenue, about 10,200 client accounts and 113,451 licensed users. PitchBook sells to professionals by subscription and does not publish prices, so you ask for a quote.

### Is PitchBook free for students?

Often, through a school. Some universities license PitchBook for students and staff. [Stanford's library guide](https://libguides.stanford.edu/pitchbook) says its access covers current faculty, staff and students, caps exports at 10 Excel rows a day and 24 a month, and leaves out the MCP and Claude connector. Ask your library. PitchBook's own sign-up forms ask whether you are a student.

### How does PitchBook collect its data?

PitchBook says a data operations team of 1,800+ people updates records several times a day from survey requests, regulatory filings and freedom-of-information responses, and reviews more than a million news events a week. That comes from [PitchBook's data page](https://web.archive.org/web/20260708093912/https://pitchbook.com/data), so treat it as the company's own description.

### How do I get access to PitchBook?

Fill in the request form on [PitchBook's free trial page](https://web.archive.org/web/20260928142616/https://pitchbook.com/free-trial) or its pricing page, and a representative follows up. PitchBook says it will see whether a trial fits. Other routes are a university library licence, free profile previews, and a free 49-company sample on [AWS Marketplace](https://aws.amazon.com/marketplace/pp/prodview-kjevwrwcqwszi).

### Does PitchBook have an API?

Yes. Its Direct Data products deliver data by API and data feed, and [Morningstar's 10-K](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1289419/000128941926000013/morn-20251231.htm) says they are priced by data volume, refresh needs and technical specs. [Multiples](https://multiples.vc/compare/pitchbook-api-alternatives), a competitor, reports packages from about $70,000 a year and says a platform licence is required. For company profiles by website, see the [company enrichment API](https://enrich.chat/api/company-enrichment/).

### Who owns PitchBook?

Morningstar owns PitchBook. In October 2016 it agreed to pay about $180 million for the stake it did not already hold, which valued PitchBook at $225.0 million, per [Morningstar's announcement](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1289419/000110465916150147/a16-19902_1ex99d2.htm). Morningstar had owned about 20 percent since investing in 2009. PitchBook now reports as its own segment.
