# What is sales intelligence? Definition, the six parts, and how it fits your sales stack

Sales intelligence turns data about companies and buyers into decisions: whom to contact, when, and what to say. Here is what the term covers, what sits outside it, and what to buy first.

By Enrich.chat Editorial. Updated October 15, 2026.

**Short answer:** Sales intelligence is the data, software and practice that tell a seller which accounts to work, whom to contact and when. [IBM](https://www.ibm.com/think/topics/sales-intelligence) and [Salesforce](https://www.salesforce.com/sales/sales-intelligence/) define it as collecting and analyzing information about prospects and customers to guide sales decisions. Vendors count contact, company, tech stack, intent and trigger-event data, and some add call analysis.

## Key takeaways

- Sales intelligence is data used to decide whom to sell to and when. IBM, Salesforce, HubSpot and ZoomInfo each define it as gathering and using data about prospects and buyers to guide sales decisions.
- The parts differ by source. Salesforce lists five data types, HubSpot five, ZoomInfo six and Crunchbase three. Every list includes contact, company and intent data.
- A CRM records what you know, sales engagement runs outreach, and data enrichment fills blank fields. Sales intelligence decides whom to work next.
- Labels blur. Gartner says revenue intelligence, sales force automation and sales engagement overlap more each year, and Apollo's $49-a-seat Basic plan, billed yearly, bundles contact data, intent topics, sequences and call recording (checked October 15, 2026).
- Enrich.chat covers three parts for AI agents: contact data, company data and tech stack, with 10 free lookups a day. It sells no intent, trigger-event or call data.

## What is sales intelligence?

Sales intelligence is the collection and use of information about prospects, customers and markets to make better sales decisions. [IBM defines it](https://www.ibm.com/think/topics/sales-intelligence) as gathering data on prospects, customers, competitors and market conditions, so sales teams can spot opportunities and tailor their approach. [Salesforce's guide](https://www.salesforce.com/sales/sales-intelligence/) gives a shorter version: data and insights that help sellers make informed decisions through the whole sales process.

The term has two meanings, and pages often mix them. It names a practice, such as researching a buyer before you call. It also names the software that does the research for you. [Salesloft notes](https://www.salesloft.com/resources/blog/sales-intelligence-software) that a search for sales intelligence software mostly returns B2B prospecting databases. A **sales intelligence platform** bundles several kinds of data in one product. [Clay's glossary](https://www.clay.com/glossary/sales-intelligence-platform) defines one as software that collects, processes and analyzes data from many sources to give sellers insights.

The sources agree on the goal. [HubSpot](https://www.hubspot.com/glossary/sales-intelligence) says sales intelligence informs which opportunities to prioritize and how to tailor outreach. [ZoomInfo](https://pipeline.zoominfo.com/sales/sales-intelligence) says it helps revenue teams identify, prioritize and engage the right buyers at the right time. They disagree on which data counts. Figure 1 compares five published lists.

**Figure 1: Which data types five sources count as sales intelligence.** A grid of seven data types against five published definitions: IBM, Salesforce, HubSpot, ZoomInfo and Crunchbase. All five list contact, company and intent data. Four list tech stack as its own type. Trigger events, deal and call data, and competitive data are listed by only some of them.

*Data types in five published definitions of sales intelligence. A filled dot means the page lists it as a data type. A ring means it appears inside another type, as a source or as a feature. The orange bar marks the three types all five share. Sources: [IBM](https://www.ibm.com/think/topics/sales-intelligence), [Salesforce](https://www.salesforce.com/sales/sales-intelligence/), [HubSpot](https://blog.hubspot.com/sales/use-sales-intelligence), [ZoomInfo](https://pipeline.zoominfo.com/sales/sales-intelligence) and [Crunchbase](https://about.crunchbase.com/guide/sales-intelligence). The grid is our reading of each page.*

All five lists include contact, company and intent data. Four list tech stack as its own type. Only IBM and ZoomInfo name competitive intelligence, and only IBM and Salesforce list data from your own past deals as a type. So when a vendor says it sells sales intelligence, ask which of these parts it means.

## What are the parts of sales intelligence?

Sales intelligence has six parts that matter to a seller: contact data, company data, tech stack, intent data, trigger events and conversation intelligence. The first three describe the buyer. The last three describe timing and what was said. Figure 2 shows the question each part answers and which ones Enrich.chat covers.

**Figure 2: The six parts of sales intelligence and the question each one answers.** Six cards in two columns. The left column, who the buyer is, holds contact data, company data and tech stack, and these three are covered by Enrich.chat. The right column, when to act and what was said, holds intent data, trigger events and conversation intelligence, which are sold by other vendors. Each card shows the question it answers and example fields.

*The six parts of sales intelligence, the question each answers and example fields. The part names follow the lists from [Salesforce](https://www.salesforce.com/sales/sales-intelligence/), [HubSpot](https://blog.hubspot.com/sales/use-sales-intelligence), [ZoomInfo](https://pipeline.zoominfo.com/sales/sales-intelligence) and [Gong](https://www.gong.io/blog/what-is-conversation-intelligence). Enrich.chat covers the three parts on the left, and its fields are documented in [agents.md](https://enrich.chat/agents.md).*

### Contact data

Contact data tells you how to reach a person: name, title, department, work email, phone and profile link. [ZoomInfo's list](https://pipeline.zoominfo.com/sales/sales-intelligence) adds management level, org chart and career history. People change jobs, so this part needs a refresh habit. Our guide to [B2B data decay](https://enrich.chat/blog/b2b-data-decay/) explains why.

### Company data

Company data, also called firmographic data, describes the business: industry, headcount, revenue, location and ownership. [HubSpot's example](https://blog.hubspot.com/sales/use-sales-intelligence) is a filter for logistics companies in the Midwest with more than $50M in revenue. It tells you whether an account fits before anyone writes a message. Details are in our guide to [firmographic data](https://enrich.chat/blog/firmographic-data/).

### Tech stack

Technographic data lists the software and infrastructure a company uses. In HubSpot's example, a vendor that sells a Shopify plugin pulls a list of sites built on Shopify. It matters most to software sellers, who look for accounts that run a tool they replace or connect to. Check a domain with the free [tech stack lookup](https://enrich.chat/tools/tech-stack-lookup/), or read our guide to [technographic data](https://enrich.chat/blog/technographic-data/).

### Intent data

Intent data shows which companies are researching a topic. [HubSpot lists](https://blog.hubspot.com/sales/use-sales-intelligence) visits to pricing pages, review-site activity and content downloads as examples. It usually points to an account, not a named buyer, and it covers only part of the web. Our [intent data guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/intent-data/) covers types, providers and cost.

### Trigger events

Trigger events are changes at a company that can open a sales conversation. [Salesforce lists](https://www.salesforce.com/sales/sales-intelligence/) new funding, expansion into new markets, hiring or promotions, layoffs, and mergers and acquisitions. [ZoomInfo adds](https://pipeline.zoominfo.com/sales/sales-intelligence) product launches and leadership changes. Vendors also call these signals. Most are public facts, such as a funding round, so you can check them.

### Conversation intelligence

Conversation intelligence software [records, transcribes and analyzes](https://www.gong.io/blog/what-is-conversation-intelligence) customer and prospect conversations, according to Gong. It surfaces objections, risks and coaching moments from your own calls. Vendors disagree on whether it belongs under sales intelligence. [Crunchbase](https://about.crunchbase.com/guide/sales-intelligence) lists Gong, Dialpad and Drift among its sales intelligence tools, and Salesforce lists conversation insights as a software feature. IBM's list of data types leaves it out, and Gong itself uses the wider label revenue intelligence.

## How does sales intelligence work?

Sales intelligence works in four steps: gather data, match it to your accounts, score it, and deliver it where sellers work. [Crunchbase](https://about.crunchbase.com/guide/sales-intelligence) describes three stages, which are data gathering, data analysis and actionable insights. The match step is where data enrichment fits.

1. **Gather.** [ZoomInfo lists](https://pipeline.zoominfo.com/sales/sales-intelligence) CRM data, email engagement, website analytics and recorded calls as internal sources. Public filings, announcements, professional profiles, web data and third-party providers are the external ones.
2. **Match.** Each fact must attach to the right company and person. A domain or a LinkedIn URL makes a good key. [Data enrichment](https://enrich.chat/blog/what-is-data-enrichment/) is the name for this step when it fills fields in your own records.
3. **Score.** ZoomInfo describes scoring on two dimensions: fit, meaning how well firmographic and technographic data match your ideal customer, and intent, meaning buying signals. Build the fit side from your [ideal customer profile](https://enrich.chat/blog/ideal-customer-profile/).
4. **Deliver.** Insight helps only where the seller works. [6sense says](https://6sense.com/platform/sales-intelligence/) its sales product shows buyer context in a Chrome browser, a CRM, a sales engagement tool or its own platform. An AI agent can call the same kind of data through an API.

Data quality decides the result at every step. A wrong match sends a message to the wrong person, and old data sends it to someone who left. Use the status that comes with each field, and refresh records on a schedule.

## How is sales intelligence different from data enrichment, a CRM and sales engagement?

Sales intelligence decides whom to work and when. A CRM records what you know, data enrichment fills blank fields, sales engagement runs outreach, and revenue intelligence analyzes calls and deals. Figure 3 shows how the five fit into one sales workflow.

| Category | Question it answers | Works on | Definition |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Sales intelligence | Which accounts and people should we work, and when? | Company, contact, tech and signal data | [IBM](https://www.ibm.com/think/topics/sales-intelligence), [ZoomInfo](https://pipeline.zoominfo.com/sales/sales-intelligence) |
| Data enrichment | Which fields are missing from this record? | A key you already hold, such as an email or domain | [Our guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/what-is-data-enrichment/) |
| CRM | What do we know about each customer and prospect? | Your own records and activity | [Salesforce](https://www.salesforce.com/crm/what-is-crm/) |
| Sales engagement | How do we run outreach across email, calls and social? | Contact lists and sequences | [Outreach](https://www.outreach.io/resources/blog/what-is-sales-engagement) |
| Revenue intelligence | What happened in calls and deals, and what comes next? | Seller activity, calls and pipeline | [Gartner](https://www.gartner.com/en/documents/5579027), [Gong](https://www.gong.io/blog/what-is-conversation-intelligence) |

**Figure 3: Five jobs in a sales workflow and the tool category for each.** Five stacked steps. Find uses sales intelligence to decide who fits and why now. Fill uses data enrichment to add missing fields. Record uses a CRM to store customers, deals and history. Reach uses sales engagement to run email, calls and sequences. Review uses revenue intelligence to analyze calls and deals. An orange arrow loops from Review back to Find.

*Five jobs in one sales workflow and the tool category that does each. The orange arrow shows results from calls and deals feeding the next round of target lists. Category names follow [IBM](https://www.ibm.com/think/topics/sales-intelligence), [Salesforce](https://www.salesforce.com/crm/what-is-crm/), [Outreach](https://www.outreach.io/resources/blog/what-is-sales-engagement) and [Gartner](https://www.gartner.com/en/documents/5579027). Enrich.chat works at the Find and Fill steps, for contact, company and tech stack data.*

Salesforce draws the same line between a CRM and sales intelligence. Its guide says a CRM manages and acts on existing customer information, while sales intelligence gathers and applies data to find new opportunities. [Clay's glossary](https://www.clay.com/glossary/sales-intelligence-platform) adds that a sales intelligence platform feeds those new leads into the CRM. [IBM](https://www.ibm.com/think/topics/sales-intelligence) also separates it from sales analytics: intelligence gathers the raw data, and analytics turns it into insight about the sales process.

Vendors blur these lines. [Gartner's July 2024 market guide](https://www.gartner.com/en/documents/5579027) says the revenue intelligence, sales force automation and sales engagement markets keep overlapping. [Forrester's 2024 Wave](https://www.forrester.com/blogs/the-first-forrester-wave-evaluation-of-revenue-orchestration-platforms-is-live) says revenue orchestration platforms combine sales engagement, conversation intelligence and revenue operations. Packaging does the same. [Apollo's pricing page](https://www.apollo.io/pricing) lists contact and account data, six intent topics, unlimited sequences and 150 minutes of call recording in its $49 Basic plan, billed yearly (checked October 15, 2026). Judge a tool by the parts it contains, not by its label.

## How do sales teams use sales intelligence?

Teams use sales intelligence to choose targets, rank leads, prepare for calls and time outreach. The need is real. In [Salesforce's survey](https://www.salesforce.com/news/stories/state-of-sales-report-announcement-2026/) of 4,050 sales professionals, run in August and September 2025, the average seller spent 40% of their time selling. Respondents also gave nearly a full day a week to prospecting, and 48% said they lacked the bandwidth for enough cold outreach. It is a vendor-run survey, so read it as one view.

- **Build target lists.** Turn your ideal customer profile into filters on company, contact and tech data. ZoomInfo adds that sales intelligence can size your total addressable market.
- **Score and route leads.** ZoomInfo scores on fit and intent, and routes opportunities by territory, expertise or account tier.
- **Prepare for a call.** Salesforce gives an example: a seller finds a retailer's press release about expanding into Europe, and shows how the software could speed up that project.
- **Time the outreach.** ZoomInfo says SDRs lean on trigger-event alerts, while account executives lean on expansion signals and call context inside open deals.
- **Feed an AI agent.** An agent needs a tool that returns facts, not guesses. Our guide to [AI sales agents](https://enrich.chat/blog/ai-sales-agents/) covers what they do and what data they need.

### Which parts should you buy first?

Start with the part that removes your biggest blocker.

- You cannot name or reach the right buyers: start with contact data and company data.
- You sell software that replaces or plugs into another tool: add tech stack data.
- Your list is longer than your team can work: add intent data or trigger events to rank it.
- Your reps run many calls: add conversation intelligence.

For named tools in each group, see our ranking of the [best sales intelligence tools](https://enrich.chat/blog/best-sales-intelligence-tools/).

## How much does sales intelligence software cost?

Sales intelligence software costs anywhere from $0 to tens of thousands of dollars a year, and the packaging matters as much as the price. We checked each price below on October 15, 2026.

| Model | Example | Price |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Per-seat bundle | [Apollo](https://www.apollo.io/pricing) | Free plan at $0. Basic at $49 per seat per month, billed yearly |
| Quote-only contract | [ZoomInfo](https://www.zoominfo.com/pricing) | No price on the pricing page. [Vendr](https://www.vendr.com/marketplace/zoominfo) shows a median of $33,500 a year across 1,577 purchases |
| Quote-only contract | 6sense | [Vendr](https://www.vendr.com/marketplace/6sense) shows a median of $62,220 a year across 386 purchases |
| Credits, unlimited seats | [Enrich.chat](https://enrich.chat/pricing/) | 10 free API lookups a day, then plans from $29 a month for 100,000 credits |

These tools sell different bundles, so the same dollar buys different things. Our guides to [ZoomInfo pricing](https://enrich.chat/blog/zoominfo-pricing/) and [Apollo pricing](https://enrich.chat/blog/apollo-pricing/) go deeper. On Enrich.chat, a work email found uses 10 credits, a tech stack lookup uses 5, and a mobile uses 250. A lookup that finds nothing uses 0.

## What privacy rules apply to sales intelligence?

Data about people is personal data, even in a business setting, so privacy law applies to sales intelligence. The UK regulator says the [UK GDPR applies](https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/direct-marketing-and-privacy-and-electronic-communications/business-to-business-marketing/) when you process personal data for direct marketing, even in a business context. You must tell people and have a lawful basis. If a vendor supplies the data, the [ICO adds](https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/direct-marketing-and-privacy-and-electronic-communications/organisations-using-marketing-services-of-data-brokers/) that you must do your own due diligence, and a data broker's assurances alone are not enough.

In the US, calling a mobile number can trigger TCPA rules. Our guide to [TCPA and B2B cold calling](https://enrich.chat/blog/tcpa-b2b-cold-calling/) explains them. This is general information, not legal advice. Anyone can ask to be removed from Enrich.chat at [enrich.chat/opt-out/](https://enrich.chat/opt-out/).

## How can an AI agent use sales intelligence with Enrich.chat?

Enrich.chat gives an AI agent three of the six parts: contact data, company data and tech stack. It does not offer intent data, trigger events or conversation intelligence, and it has no native CRM app. If you need those, add a second vendor.

Setup is one prompt. The agent reads [enrich.chat/agents.md](https://enrich.chat/agents.md), or you add the MCP server at `https://enrich.chat/mcp`. No key is needed to start. The calls map to the parts. `/v1/search` finds people from a plain English description. `/v1/company` returns a company profile, and `/v1/company/tech` returns its tech stack. `/v1/person` returns a work email with a status of verified, catch_all or unknown. Treat every contact as a strong lead, not a guarantee.

```text
Use www.enrich.chat to find 10 VPs of Operations at US logistics companies with 200 to 1000 employees. For each one, add the company's tech stack and flag whether it runs HubSpot, and show the work email status. Mark anyone you cannot find as not found.
```

A workload shows the cost. Looking up the tech stack of 100 companies and finding 300 work emails uses 3,500 credits. That fits the Growth plan at $29 a month, and the free tier needs no signup.

To add intent or trigger data, see the [best sales intelligence tools](https://enrich.chat/blog/best-sales-intelligence-tools/) and the [best MCP servers for sales](https://enrich.chat/blog/best-mcp-servers-for-sales/). ## Frequently asked questions

### What is sales intelligence in simple terms?

Sales intelligence is information that helps a seller decide whom to contact, when, and what to say. It covers the company, such as its industry and size, the person, such as a title and work email, and timing clues, such as a funding round. Software gathers these facts so reps do not research every account by hand. [IBM](https://www.ibm.com/think/topics/sales-intelligence) defines it as the systematic gathering of information about prospects, customers, competitors and market conditions.

### What are examples of sales intelligence?

A prospect's work email, a company's headcount and industry, the CRM and billing tools it runs, a funding announcement, a rise in research on your topic and a call transcript that names a competitor are all examples. [Salesforce](https://www.salesforce.com/sales/sales-intelligence/) groups them into firmographic, contact, technographic, event-trigger and deal data. [ZoomInfo](https://pipeline.zoominfo.com/sales/sales-intelligence) uses six layers. Contact, company and tech stack data describe the buyer. Intent, trigger events and call data describe timing and conversations.

### What is the difference between sales intelligence and a CRM?

A CRM stores and manages what you already know about customers and prospects. Sales intelligence brings in new information, so you can find opportunities and decide whom to work. [Salesforce's guide](https://www.salesforce.com/sales/sales-intelligence/) says the two work together: intelligence adds insights to the CRM, and the CRM acts on them. For the data-entry side, read our guide to [CRM data enrichment](https://enrich.chat/blog/crm-data-enrichment/).

### What is the difference between sales intelligence and revenue intelligence?

Sales intelligence is mostly data about prospects and accounts that helps you decide whom to work. Revenue intelligence analyzes seller activity, calls and pipeline to guide next steps. [Gartner's market guide](https://www.gartner.com/en/documents/5579027) describes it as capturing seller activity, measuring pipeline health and guiding sellers' next steps. Vendors mix the labels: [Crunchbase](https://about.crunchbase.com/guide/sales-intelligence) lists Gong, a revenue intelligence vendor, among its sales intelligence tools.

### Is intent data part of sales intelligence?

Most definitions say yes. IBM, Salesforce, HubSpot, ZoomInfo and Crunchbase all list intent or buyer signals among their data types. You can still run sales intelligence without it. When you can name every target account, a list of fit companies and contacts may be enough. Enrich.chat does not sell intent data. Our [intent data guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/intent-data/) explains when it pays off.

### Do small teams need sales intelligence software?

Not always. [Salesforce says](https://www.salesforce.com/sales/sales-intelligence/) companies of all sizes can benefit, because targeted outreach helps small teams compete. A small team can start with the parts it needs, usually contact and company data, and skip bundles priced per seat. Enrich.chat has 10 free API lookups a day with no signup, and plans from $29 a month with unlimited seats. See [pricing](https://enrich.chat/pricing/).
