**Short answer:** A company email format is the rule an employer uses to turn a person's name into a work address, such as first.last@gs.com at [Goldman Sachs](https://enrich.chat/email-format/goldman-sachs/) or flast@deloitte.com at [Deloitte](https://enrich.chat/email-format/deloitte/). Look up the company in this A to Z directory to see its most common format, then verify the exact address before you send, because some staff do not follow the rule.

## Key takeaways

- A company email format is a rule, such as first.last@, that IT usually sets once for everyone, for example as an [Exchange email address policy](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/email-addresses-and-address-books/email-address-policies/email-address-policies).
- First.last was the top pattern at companies with more than 10,000 staff in [Interseller's 2019 study](https://www.interseller.io/blog/2019/02/04/top-email-address-patterns-by-company-size/), at 56.31%.
- The email domain is not always the website. Goldman Sachs staff use gs.com, and Facebook moved staff email to [fb.com in 2010](https://venturebeat.com/business/facebook-fb-com).
- A format is a likely guess, not a verified address. Check one address at a time, and never mail every variation: CAN-SPAM treats [permutation-built addresses](https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/15/7704) as an aggravating factor.

## What is a company email format?

A company email format is the rule an employer uses to build each work address from a person's name. At Goldman Sachs the most common rule is first.last@gs.com, so Jane Doe would be jane.doe@gs.com, as the [Goldman Sachs email format page](https://enrich.chat/email-format/goldman-sachs/) shows.

IT teams usually set the rule once. In Microsoft Exchange, an [email address policy](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/email-addresses-and-address-books/email-address-policies/email-address-policies) holds a template, such as %g.%s for first.last, and applies it to every person the policy covers. That is why one known address at a company usually predicts the rest. This directory covers addresses only, not how to lay out the message itself.

Every company in the A to Z list on this page has its own format page. For a company that is not listed, enter its domain in the free [email format finder](https://enrich.chat/tools/email-format-finder/). Our guide to [business email formats](https://enrich.chat/blog/email-address-formats/) explains each common pattern in depth.

## How do you read a company email format page?

Each company format page is built from the same five parts. The first three sit in a card at the top, next to the verify box. Two parts, other formats and other domains, appear only when a company has them.

**Figure 1: How to read a company email format page.** A mock format page for a made-up company, Acme, with five labelled parts: the most common format, first.last@acme.com; an example for Jane Doe, jane.doe@acme.com; other formats seen less often, flast and first; other email domains, acmegroup.com and acme.co.uk; and an email finder box to verify one address.

*The five parts of a company email format page, shown as one card. Acme is a made-up company. On real pages, such as the [Goldman Sachs email format](https://enrich.chat/email-format/goldman-sachs/), the verify box sits beside the card and other domains appear under the format table.*

1. **Most common format.** The pattern most staff at the company's main email domain follow. On the [Deloitte email format page](https://enrich.chat/email-format/deloitte/), it is flast@deloitte.com.
2. **Example for Jane Doe.** The same rule applied to a sample name, so you can see where the dots, underscores and initials go. At Deloitte, Jane Doe becomes jdoe@deloitte.com.
3. **Also seen, less often.** Other patterns found at the same domain. The [Microsoft email format page](https://enrich.chat/email-format/microsoft/) leads with firstl@microsoft.com but also lists flast, first.last and firstlast, so expect variety there.
4. **Other email domains.** Some companies send email from more than one domain. The [JPMorgan Chase email format page](https://enrich.chat/email-format/jpmorgan-chase/) names jpmorgan.com first, then jpmchase.com and chase.com.
5. **Verify box.** A free email finder beside the card, already filled in with the company's domain. Type a full name to check one real address.

Read the short answer on each page as well. "Most employees follow it" means one pattern clearly leads. "Other formats are also in use" means no single pattern dominates, so a guess is more likely to miss.

## How are the formats on these pages worked out?

The formats come from company addresses observed in Enrich.chat contact data. Each address is matched to its owner's name and read as a pattern: jane.doe@ is first.last, and jdoe@ is first initial plus last name. The patterns at each domain are then ranked.

The top pattern becomes the most common format. Patterns seen less often go under "also seen". When staff also send from another domain, the page names it. Each page shows the date it was last updated, because formats change when companies merge, rebrand or move to a new email system.

If you quote a format, link to the company's page and give that date. A format describes how most addresses at a company are built. It never confirms the address of one person.

## Why should you verify an address before you send?

A format gives you the likely address, not the real one. Verify each address before you send it anything, for three reasons.

- **People break the rule.** A second Jane Doe may get a number, and contractors may write from an agency domain. Exchange lets an admin [turn off policy updates](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/email-addresses-and-address-books/email-address-policies/email-address-policies) for one person, so early hires can keep an older address. The [email format finder](https://enrich.chat/tools/email-format-finder/) page covers these exceptions in detail.
- **Domains change.** In 2010, Facebook moved staff email from facebook.com to [fb.com](https://venturebeat.com/business/facebook-fb-com). The email domain is often not the website, too: [Goldman Sachs staff use gs.com](https://enrich.chat/email-format/goldman-sachs/), not goldmansachs.com.
- **Catch-all domains say yes to everything.** [Google Workspace](https://knowledge.workspace.google.com/admin/gmail/advanced/get-misaddressed-email-in-a-catch-all-mailbox?hl=en) lets admins send mail for unknown addresses to one shared mailbox. On such a domain a mailbox check cannot confirm the person, so the format is your best evidence. Test any domain with the [catch-all checker](https://enrich.chat/tools/catch-all-checker/).

Bounces cost you, too. [Google's sender guidelines](https://support.google.com/a/answer/81126) tell senders to cut volume when messages start bouncing. Check one address at a time with the free [email finder](https://enrich.chat/tools/email-finder/), which labels each result verified, catch-all or unknown. If you start from a LinkedIn profile, the [LinkedIn email finder](https://enrich.chat/tools/linkedin-email-finder/) skips the format step.

**Figure 2: Look up, apply, verify, then send.** Four steps for using a company email format: look up the format, first.last at acme.com; apply it to a name, jane.doe at acme.com; check the status of the address; then act on it. A verified address gets one email, a catch-all address is treated as risky because the server accepts all mail, and an unknown address is not sent to.

*Look up the format, apply it to one name, verify the mailbox, and send only to a verified address. Catch-all behaviour: [Google Workspace Admin Help](https://knowledge.workspace.google.com/admin/gmail/advanced/get-misaddressed-email-in-a-catch-all-mailbox?hl=en).*

## Which email formats do large companies use?

First.last is the usual choice at big employers. In [Interseller's 2019 study](https://www.interseller.io/blog/2019/02/04/top-email-address-patterns-by-company-size/) of over 5 million companies, first.last was the top pattern at companies with more than 10,000 staff, at 56.31%. First initial plus last name came second, at 21.75%. The table gives one company page for each of six common patterns.

| Pattern | Jane Doe becomes | Example company page |
| --- | --- | --- |
| first.last | `jane.doe@` | [Goldman Sachs](https://enrich.chat/email-format/goldman-sachs/): first.last@gs.com |
| flast | `jdoe@` | [Deloitte](https://enrich.chat/email-format/deloitte/): flast@deloitte.com |

The study is several years old and comes from a sales software company, so treat it as a guide, not a rule. When a company page shows more than one pattern, the [email permutator](https://enrich.chat/tools/email-permutator/) lists every option for a name.

## How do you request a company that is not listed?

Email [hello@enrich.chat](mailto:hello@enrich.chat) with the company's name and website. Add its email domain if you know it, since staff often send from a different one, as Goldman Sachs staff do with gs.com.

You do not have to wait. The [email format finder](https://enrich.chat/tools/email-format-finder/) accepts any domain, and each visitor gets 10 free lookups across the website tools. For a list of names, your AI agent can call the [Enrich.chat API for agents](https://enrich.chat/agents/), with 10 free lookups a day. After that, monthly plans start at $29 for 100,000 credits, and a work email found uses 10 credits. A lookup that finds nothing uses 0 credits. See [pricing](https://enrich.chat/pricing/) for every plan.

## How do you use company email formats responsibly?

Use a format to reach one person you have a real reason to contact, then verify that one address. Never build every variation of a name and mail them all.

- **US: CAN-SPAM.** A commercial email that breaks the law becomes an [aggravated violation](https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/15/7704) if the sender knew the address came from an automated tool that combines "names, letters, or numbers into numerous permutations." The FTC says the law makes [no exception for business-to-business email](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/can-spam-act-compliance-guide-business). Every message needs a working opt-out and your postal address, and you must honor opt-outs within 10 business days.
- **EU: GDPR.** The European Commission lists name.surname@company.com as an [example of personal data](https://commission.europa.eu/law/law-topic/data-protection/data-protection-explained_en), while a generic info@company.com is not. A named work address brings the GDPR into play.
- **UK: PECR and UK GDPR.** The ICO says you do not need consent under PECR to email [corporate subscribers](https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/direct-marketing-and-privacy-and-electronic-communications/business-to-business-marketing/), but you must say who you are and give a valid opt-out address. Sole traders and some partnerships count as individuals, so the consent rule applies to them.

Anyone can remove their data from Enrich.chat at [enrich.chat/opt-out/](https://enrich.chat/opt-out/). You are responsible for following the laws that apply to your outreach. This is not legal advice.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I find a company's email format?

Search for the company in the A to Z list on this page and open its page. You will see the most common format, an example for Jane Doe, the other formats seen and any other email domains. If the company is not listed, enter its domain in the free [email format finder](https://enrich.chat/tools/email-format-finder/). To check by hand, find one named address in a press release or filing, match it to the person's name, and confirm the pattern with a second address.

### What is the most common company email format?

It depends on company size. In [Interseller's 2019 study](https://www.interseller.io/blog/2019/02/04/top-email-address-patterns-by-company-size/) of over 5 million companies, first name only (jane@) led at companies with up to 50 staff, first initial plus last name (jdoe@) led from 51 to 1,000, and first.last (jane.doe@) led above 1,000. At companies with more than 10,000 staff, first.last was the top pattern at 56.31%. The study comes from a sales software vendor, so check the actual company.

### What is my company's email format?

Look at your own work address and match it to your name. If you are Jane Doe and your address is jane.doe@acme.com, your company's format is first.last. New hires usually get the same pattern, because IT sets it once, for example as an [Exchange email address policy](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/email-addresses-and-address-books/email-address-policies/email-address-policies). Colleagues with shared names, contractors and staff at acquired brands may differ, so ask IT before you rely on the rule.

### Can I guess someone's email from the company format?

You can use the format to make a first guess, but do not send to it until you verify it. Some staff break the rule, and every bounce counts against your sender reputation. Check the guess with the free [email finder](https://enrich.chat/tools/email-finder/), which labels each result verified, catch-all or unknown. On a catch-all domain no check can confirm the person, so treat that address as risky. Never email every variation of a name.

### Why is a company's email domain different from its website?

Many companies send email from a short or older domain. Goldman Sachs staff use gs.com, and Facebook made fb.com its [corporate email domain in 2010](https://venturebeat.com/business/facebook-fb-com), which is why the [Meta email format page](https://enrich.chat/email-format/meta/) shows fb.com. Acquired brands often keep their own domains. Each company page names the main email domain and lists the others when staff use more than one, such as jpmchase.com and chase.com for JPMorgan Chase.

### Is it legal to email someone using their company email format?

Often yes, if the message is relevant and follows the rules where the person works. In the US, the FTC says CAN-SPAM makes [no exception for business email](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/can-spam-act-compliance-guide-business), so include an opt-out and your postal address. Addresses built by a permutation tool can make a violation an [aggravated one](https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/15/7704). In the UK and EU, a named work address is personal data, and the [ICO's B2B rules](https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/direct-marketing-and-privacy-and-electronic-communications/business-to-business-marketing/) apply. This is not legal advice.
