# Technographic search: find companies that use a technology

Add uses=hubspot to a company or people search and combine it with size, industry and place. Counts and filter lists are free. Check any one company's stack, then find the people who run the tool.

By Enrich.chat Editorial. Updated October 19, 2026.

**Short answer:** Technographic search finds companies by the software they use. On Enrich.chat, add `uses=hubspot` to `GET /v1/companies` or to a people search, or `uses_category=crm` for any tool in a category, and combine it with size, industry and place. Counting matches is free, a company in a result list uses 5 credits, and a detection is a signal to confirm, not proof.

## Key takeaways

- `uses=hubspot` works on company search and people search. Several tools mean a company must use all of them, while `uses_category=crm` matches any tool in that category. Exact names come from `GET /v1/facets/technology`, which is free.
- `GET /v1/company/tech?domain=` lists one company's technologies, each with a category. A stack found uses 5 credits, and one not found uses 0.
- A search that filters by technology returns one page of up to 25 companies, largest first. The free count shows how many match in all.
- A technology detection is a signal, not proof. Confirm your top accounts before you write to them.

## Technographic search for agents and apps

- **One filter, any cut.** Add `uses=hubspot` to a company or people search, then narrow by size, industry and place.
- **Exact names, free.** `/v1/facets/technology` lists each tool with its category. Lists and counts use no credits.
- **A stack per company.** `/v1/company/tech` returns a company's technologies with categories, for 5 credits.
- **From the tool to its owner.** People search takes the same `uses` filter, so one call can ask for marketing operations leaders at companies on a tool.
- **Free counts.** `/v1/companies/count?uses=` shows how many companies match before you list any.
- **Built for agents.** The MCP server has `search_companies`, `company_tech_stack` and `list_filter_values`, and extra filters go in `more_filters`. A wrong name returns suggestions.

## From a tool name to the people who run it

1. **Find the exact name.** Call `/v1/facets/technology?q=hubspot`. It is free and returns the spelling and the category.
2. **Count, then list.** Add `uses` to a company search. The count is free. A list is one page of up to 25 companies.
3. **Check the stack, find the people.** Confirm a company's stack with `/v1/company/tech`, then search the people at its website.

## What is technographic search?

Technographic search finds companies by the software and services they use, such as a CRM, a payment processor or a cloud host. It sits beside firmographic filters like industry and size, which the [firmographic data guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/firmographic-data/) covers. Vendors infer the answer from public traces, so a match is evidence, not proof.

Vendors read different traces. [TheirStack](https://theirstack.com/en/docs/guides/how-to-find-companies-by-technology-stack) detects technologies from job postings. [Crustdata](https://docs.crustdata.com/guides/technographics) combines a company's web presence with its job postings. Open-source fingerprints read website code, headers and DNS records, as [our guide to technographic data](https://enrich.chat/blog/technographic-data/) explains.

Teams use technographic search for three jobs:

- **Integration fit.** If your product connects to a tool, the companies that use it are your best-fit accounts.
- **Competitive replacement.** If you sell an alternative to a tool, the companies that run it are the accounts to win.
- **Relevant outreach.** Mention a tool by name only when it changes your message.

To browse well-known examples without a search, open the [companies using a technology](https://enrich.chat/companies-using/) directory.

## How do you find companies that use HubSpot on Enrich.chat?

Add `uses=hubspot` to a company search, then narrow it with size, industry or place so the list is one you can work. The same filter is in the dashboard. Open the Companies screen and use Uses technology, under Technology and signals.

1. **Check the name.** `GET /v1/facets/technology?q=hubspot` returns the exact spelling and category. It is free.
2. **Count.** The count request takes the same filters as the list and uses no credits.
3. **List.** The list request returns one page of companies.

```
GET /v1/companies/count?uses=hubspot&state=Texas&company_size=51-200
GET /v1/companies?uses=hubspot&state=Texas&company_size=51-200&limit=25
```

The list is one page. A search that filters by technology returns up to 25 companies, largest LinkedIn following first, with no `next_cursor`. The count tells you how many match in all. To see other companies, narrow the search with another state, size band or industry. The sample response above is illustrative, with fictional companies on example.com.

Each company in the list uses 5 credits on a plan. On the free tier, the search uses one of your 10 lookups a day, however many companies it shows.

**Figure 1: A technology search request, part by part.** A request to GET /v1/companies with uses=hubspot, state=Texas, company_size=51-200 and limit=25. The uses filter means the company must use the tool, the state and size filters combine with AND, and limit sets rows per page from 1 to 25. The response shows how the request was read and returns one page of companies with no next cursor.

To reach the people, pass a company's website to `company_domain` in a people search, or add `uses` to the people search itself. The second route finds, for example, marketing operations leaders in Texas at companies that use HubSpot, in one call. Then `GET /v1/person?person_id=` reveals a contact. A work email found uses 10 credits and a mobile 250. See [people search](https://enrich.chat/features/people-search/) for the filters.

```text
Use www.enrich.chat to find companies in Texas with 51 to 200 employees that use HubSpot, then find the head of marketing at each one and give me each work email with its status
```

## Which technologies can you search for?

You can search for the tools in the technology list. `GET /v1/facets/technology` returns each tool with its category, and `GET /v1/facets/technology_category` returns the categories. Both are free.

| Call | What it returns |
| --- | --- |
| `/v1/facets/technology?q=hubspot` | The exact spelling to pass to `uses`, with each category the tool sits in |
| `/v1/facets/technology?q=crm` | Tools whose name or category contains crm |
| `/v1/facets/technology_category` | The category names and labels, such as CRM, marketing automation, e-commerce and analytics |
| `uses_category=crm` on a company or people search | Companies that use any tool in that category, so you do not need to name each tool |

Names match loosely, so `hubspot` and `HubSpot` both work. A name that is not in the list returns `unknown_filter_value` with `did_you_mean` suggestions, so an agent can correct itself. A tool that is not on the list cannot be searched. One tool can sit in several categories, and the facet list shows each pairing.

Other technology signals sit beside `uses`: a marketing technology category (`martech_category`), whether the company has a CIO or a CISO, whether it has a mobile app or a web app, app downloads and app category. `GET /v1/filters` lists them with an example each, for free. Each works on the data Enrich.chat holds, so a company can have no value for a field.

### How do you see what one company uses?

Call `GET /v1/company/tech?domain=`, or add `include=technologies` to `GET /v1/company`. Each technology comes back with a category. A stack found uses 5 credits, and nothing found uses 0. Neither call takes a company name.

For a whole list of accounts, upload a CSV of websites to [Bulk enrich](https://enrich.chat/features/bulk-enrichment/) and choose company tech stacks, or start a job with `POST /v1/jobs` and `op` set to `company_tech`. Choose Run it on the server and the job keeps going after you close the tab. A job holds up to 5,000 rows, and a signed webhook can tell your app when it finishes. [Background jobs](https://enrich.chat/features/background-jobs/) has the details.

In the dashboard, open a company from the Companies screen and choose Load full profile. The technologies show grouped by category, as Figure 3 shows. The free [tech stack lookup](https://enrich.chat/tools/tech-stack-lookup/) checks one site in a browser, and [what technology does a website use](https://enrich.chat/blog/what-technology-does-a-website-use/) covers other ways to check. For examples, see companies that use [HubSpot](https://enrich.chat/companies-using/hubspot/), [Salesforce](https://enrich.chat/companies-using/salesforce/) and [AWS](https://enrich.chat/companies-using/aws/).

**Figure 3: A company profile with its technologies.** A drawing of a company profile panel for a fictional company. The top shows industry, size band, revenue band, founded year and funding. Below, Technologies are grouped by category, such as CRM, marketing automation, cloud, e-commerce and email hosting, and one tool can appear in more than one group. The profile with technologies uses the profile credit rate, and nothing found uses no credits.

## How accurate is technographic data?

Treat every technology match as a signal to confirm. [Apollo's guide to technology targeting](https://www.apollo.io/insights/find-companies-that-run-a-specific-technology-in-their-stack-so-i-can-target-them) says most technographic data is a probabilistic signal, not a guarantee, and that providers report accuracy around 90% at best. Treat every Enrich.chat match the same way.

A detection shows a trace, not a decision. The open-source [webappanalyzer fingerprint](https://github.com/enthec/webappanalyzer/blob/main/src/technologies/h.json) for HubSpot looks for a script from hs-scripts.com, a JavaScript variable named `_hsq` and DNS records that mention HubSpot domain verification. Finding one of these shows HubSpot's code or setup on a site, not that anyone uses it today.

- **It may be old.** Apollo notes that a tag seen once, months ago, can reflect a trial or an integration that was later removed.
- **It hides the plan.** A match does not show which plan the company pays for or how many people use the tool.
- **It can miss tools.** Apollo says backend systems, private databases and internal tools rarely leave a public footprint. A missing tool is not proof that a company does not use it.

Three habits help. Combine the tool with size, industry and a role, so one weak signal does not decide the list. Confirm your top accounts with one stack lookup before you write to them. Open with the problem the tool creates for the reader, not with a line about their software.

## How much does technographic search cost?

Lists and counts are free. A company in a result list uses 5 credits on a plan, and a stack lookup uses 5. On the free tier, each search or stack lookup that finds something uses one of your 10 lookups a day.

| What you do | Credits | Plan that covers it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| List technologies and categories | 0 | None needed |
| Count companies that use a tool | 0 | None needed |
| Read one page of 25 companies | 125 | Growth, $29 a month |
| Check the stack of 100 accounts | 500 | Growth, $29 a month |
| Check 100 stacks and reveal one work email at each, where found | 1,500 | Growth, $29 a month |

A plan is a fixed monthly price with a pool of credits, so each row shows the smallest plan that holds that work. Unused credits do not roll over. See [pricing](https://enrich.chat/pricing/) for every plan.

## What does technographic search not do, and when is another tool better?

Enrich.chat's technographic search is a filter on company and people search, with a stack lookup beside it. It has gaps.

- **One page per search.** A technology search returns up to 25 companies. Use the free count for the total, and narrow by state, size or industry to see others.
- **All of them for named tools.** Several tools in `uses` mean a company must use all of them, as Figure 2 shows. For either-or between named tools, run one search per tool. For any tool in a category, use `uses_category`.
- **Listed tools only.** You can filter on the tools in the technology list, not on any tool on the web.
- **No dates or confidence.** A stack shows names and categories. It does not show when a tool was first seen or how sure the match is.
- **No alerts or tracking.** Enrich.chat does not notify you when a company adopts or drops a tool, and webhooks announce finished jobs only.

**Figure 2: Several tools in uses return the overlap.** Two overlapping circles, one for companies that use HubSpot and one for companies that use Salesforce. A search with uses=hubspot,salesforce returns only the overlap, the companies that use both. For companies that use either tool, run one search for each tool and join the lists.

*The `uses` filter is all-of, not any-of. Source: the [Enrich.chat OpenAPI spec](https://enrich.chat/openapi.json).*

Other tools cover these gaps. TheirStack's [company search](https://theirstack.com/en/docs/guides/how-to-find-companies-by-technology-stack) offers "is any of" and "contains all of" matching, plus filters for confidence and for first and last date found. Apollo's [organization search API](https://docs.apollo.io/reference/organization-search) documents more than 1,500 supported technologies. Hunter's [Discover](https://help.hunter.io/en/articles/9123069-find-companies-using-hunter-discover) lets you match any or all technologies, as a paid-plan feature. Choose one of those when you need either-or matching, install dates or the widest tool catalog. For firmographic filters, see [company search](https://enrich.chat/features/company-search/). For account lists built on a tool, see [account-based marketing lists](https://enrich.chat/use-cases/abm-lead-lists/). Save the accounts to a list and your whole [team](https://enrich.chat/features/team-workspaces/) sees it, with the owner's plan paying for lookups. To rank people at those accounts by fit, see [match tiers](https://enrich.chat/features/match-tiers/). Agents can read every endpoint on this page in [agents.md](https://enrich.chat/agents.md), and the [install page](https://enrich.chat/install/) shows how to connect one.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I find companies that use HubSpot?

Add `uses=hubspot` to a company search on Enrich.chat, in the Companies screen of the dashboard or with `GET /v1/companies`. Narrow it with size, industry or state. The search returns one page of up to 25 companies, largest first, and the free count shows how many match in all. For well-known examples, browse the [companies using HubSpot](https://enrich.chat/companies-using/hubspot/) directory.

### What is the difference between technographic and firmographic data?

Firmographic data describes the company: industry, size, revenue, location and age. Technographic data describes the tools it runs, such as a CRM or a cloud host. Firmographic filters say whether a company fits. A technographic filter says whether it works the way your product expects. Good searches use both, which is why `uses` sits beside the size and industry filters. The [firmographic data guide](https://enrich.chat/blog/firmographic-data/) has examples.

### Can I search for companies that use more than one technology?

Yes, for all of them. Several values in `uses`, such as `hubspot,salesforce`, return only companies that use every tool you list. There is no either-or option for named tools, so run one search per tool and join the lists. To match any tool in a category, such as CRM, use `uses_category`. Check exact names first with `/v1/facets/technology`, which is free.

### How do I see which technologies one company uses?

Call `GET /v1/company/tech?domain=` with the company's website. It returns each technology with a category, uses 5 credits when it finds a stack and 0 when it does not. In the dashboard, open a company and choose Load full profile. The free [tech stack lookup](https://enrich.chat/tools/tech-stack-lookup/) checks one site in your browser.

### How accurate is technographic data?

No provider can promise a perfect match. [Apollo's guide](https://www.apollo.io/insights/find-companies-that-run-a-specific-technology-in-their-stack-so-i-can-target-them) says most technographic data is a probabilistic signal, not a guarantee, and tools inside a company often leave no public trace. A detection can be old, too. Treat each match as a strong lead: filter by size and role as well, and confirm key accounts with a stack lookup before you write to them.

### Can I find the people who run a tool, not only the companies?

Yes. People search takes the same `uses` filter, so you can ask for marketing operations leaders at companies that use HubSpot in one call. You can also take a company's website from a search and pass it to `company_domain`. Each person returned uses 5 credits. A work email found uses 10 credits and a mobile 250. Anything not found uses 0.
