# How to build a lead list, from filters to a CSV you can use

Turn your ideal customer profile into filters, read the free count, search, save the people you want, reveal their emails and export a clean CSV. The credit math for a 500-person list is below.

By Enrich.chat Editorial. Updated October 19, 2026.

**Short answer:** To build a lead list, turn your ideal customer profile into filters, read the free count, run the search, save the people you want to a list, reveal their work emails, and export a CSV. On Enrich.chat the count is free, each person shown uses 5 credits and each email revealed 10, so a 500-person list with emails uses at most 7,500 credits.

## Key takeaways

- Counts are free. The dashboard shows how many people match as you edit filters, and `GET /v1/search/count` does the same in the API.
- A search shows 25 people a page and reaches up to 1,000 results. On a plan, each person shown uses 5 credits.
- Reveal after you save. An email is 10 credits and a mobile 250. Nothing found is free, and a revealed contact is free to open again, for the whole team.
- Add your do-not-contact list before you export. The whole team shares it, and list exports leave those people out.

## What you need to build a list and nothing else

- **Filters from your profile.** Job title, level, department, industry, company size, revenue band, technology, funding stage and place, plus filters to leave out what you skip. Or just type a sentence.
- **A free count first.** The count updates as you edit filters and costs nothing, so you size a list before you spend a credit.
- **Shared lists with tags and notes.** Save people or companies from any search. Add a tag and a note. The whole team sees the list.
- **Reveal only who you keep.** 10 credits per email, 250 per mobile. Nothing found is free, and revealed contacts are shared with your team.
- **Do not contact, built in.** Add emails, company websites or LinkedIn profiles. They are left out of every list export.
- **Export as CSV or XLSX.** Export this page, selected rows, up to 1,000 results per search, or a whole list, as CSV or an Excel file.

## From a buyer profile to a list you can send to

1. **Describe the buyer.** Pick a role, a kind of company and a place. Type it in plain English or set the filters, and watch the free count.
2. **Search and save.** Run the search, then save the people you want to a list with a tag and a note.
3. **Reveal and export.** Reveal emails for the people you keep, then export the list as CSV or XLSX with your do-not-contact list applied.

## How do you build a lead list step by step?

Build it in six steps: describe the buyer as filters, read the free count, search, save the people you want, reveal their contacts and export. Enrich.chat spends no credits until you show rows or reveal a contact, so you can tune the filters for free.

1. **Write the buyer as filters.** Name one role, one kind of company and one place. For a list of accounts, start in [company search](https://enrich.chat/features/company-search/) instead.
2. **Read the free count.** The count updates as you edit filters, so add a filter if it is huge and drop one if it is tiny. In the API this is `GET /v1/search/count`.
3. **Run the search.** Results come best first: people with an email and a mobile on file, then email only. A page holds 25 people, and one search reaches up to 1,000.
4. **Save the keepers.** Add people to a [list](https://enrich.chat/features/lists-and-export/) with a tag and a note. Saving costs nothing, and your whole [team](https://enrich.chat/features/team-workspaces/) sees the list.
5. **Reveal contacts.** An email costs 10 credits and a mobile 250. Nothing found is free, and a contact you revealed is shared with your team, so opening it again costs nothing.
6. **Export the list.** Export CSV or an Excel (.xlsx) file from the list. Anyone on your shared [do-not-contact list](https://enrich.chat/features/do-not-contact/) is left out.

If you start from a spreadsheet of names instead of a search, skip the search and run Bulk enrich on the server as a [background job](https://enrich.chat/features/background-jobs/). It keeps going after you close the tab.

**Figure 1: The lead list funnel for a 500-person list.** Five steps and what each costs. Count: free. Search: 500 people shown, 2,500 credits. Save to a list: free. Reveal emails: up to 500, up to 5,000 credits. Export a CSV: free, minus anyone on your do-not-contact list. The total for 500 people with emails is 7,500 credits.

## How do you turn an ideal customer profile into filters?

Write the profile as one sentence, then map each part to a filter. Take "IT directors at US hospitals with 1,000+ employees". You can paste that sentence as it is, or set the filters yourself. Enrich.chat shows how it read your sentence in `interpreted_as`, and a filter you set replaces what the sentence says about the same thing.

| Part of your profile | Filter in the dashboard | API parameter |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Buyer role | Job title, Level, Department, Role group | `title`, `level`, `function`, `persona` |
| Industry | Industry | `industry` |
| Company size | Employees | `company_size`, `employees_min`, `employees_max` |
| Revenue band | Revenue | `company_revenue` |
| Tools they run | Uses technology | `uses` |
| Place | Country, State | `country`, `state` |
| Several title phrases | More filters: any of these title phrases, exact titles | `title_any`, `title_exact` |
| Industry codes | More filters: NAICS industry code, SIC industry code | `naics`, `sic` |
| Customers and segments to skip | Leave these out, plus the More filters "Leave out" group | `exclude_domains`, `exclude_industry`, `exclude_company_name`, `exclude_country` |
| Contact on file | Has a work email, Has a mobile | `has_email`, `has_mobile` |

A wrong value returns `unknown_filter_value` with `did_you_mean` suggestions, and `GET /v1/facets/industry` lists every valid value for free. `GET /v1/filters` lists every filter with its type and an example. A filter works on the data we hold, so not every company has every field. Keep the filters as a saved search, shared with your team, so anyone can run them again before the next campaign. Our guide to the [ideal customer profile](https://enrich.chat/blog/ideal-customer-profile/) explains how to choose the parts.

When the exact profile returns too few people, build the list in tiers. Write tier 1 as IT directors at US hospitals with 1,000+ employees, tier 2 as IT managers at the same hospitals, and tier 3 as IT directors at hospitals with 501 to 1,000 employees. The dashboard's Match tiers mode and `POST /v1/search/cascade` return each person once, labelled with the tier that matched first and a score of 100, 75, 50, 25 or 10. Counts for a tier set are free, so you see what each tier adds before you read a row. A tier search is billed like a normal one, 5 credits for each person shown on a plan. See [match tiers](https://enrich.chat/features/match-tiers/).

**Figure 2: The People search screen.** The dashboard's People search screen drawn as a diagram. Filters sit on the left: job title, level, industry, employees, country and has a work email. On the right are a free count of matching people, a Search button, three result rows with reveal buttons, a bar for selected rows with Add to list, Reveal emails and Export CSV, and a note that each row shown uses 5 credits.

*The People search screen, redrawn: filters on the left, a free count, results with a reveal button per person, and bulk actions for the rows you select. Names and numbers are made up. See [people search](https://enrich.chat/features/people-search/).*

Test before you spend: show one page of 25, read the titles and companies, and only then page further. On the free tier, a search uses one lookup however many rows it shows. For a preview without signing in, try the free [lead list builder](https://enrich.chat/tools/lead-list-builder/).

## How many credits does a 500-person lead list use?

A 500-person list with a work email for each person uses at most 7,500 credits. That fits the Growth plan at $29 a month.

| Step | Credits |
| --- | --- |
| Read the count, as often as you like | 0 |
| Show 500 people, 20 pages of 25 (500 x 5 credits) | 2,500 |
| Save them to a list | 0 |
| Reveal 500 emails (up to 500 x 10 credits) | Up to 5,000 |
| Reveal 50 mobiles, optional (up to 50 x 250 credits) | Up to 12,500 |
| **Total with emails** | **Up to 7,500** (Growth plan, $29 a month) |
| **Total with 50 mobiles** | **Up to 20,000** (Growth plan, $29 a month) |

Adding 50 mobiles still fits the Growth plan. Anyone whose contact is not found uses 0 credits. A row you never save still costs 5 credits to show, so tighten the filters before you page through. On the free tier, one search uses one of your 10 daily lookups however many rows it shows, and each reveal uses one more. Plans bill monthly with unlimited seats, the owner's credits are one pool for the whole team, and unused credits do not roll over. See [pricing](https://enrich.chat/pricing/).

## Can an AI agent build the list for you?

Yes. The same count, search and reveal flow works through the API and the MCP server, so Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor can run it from one prompt. The MCP tools include `search_people`, which has a `count_only` option, and `list_filter_values`.

Enrich.chat has two MCP addresses. `https://enrich.chat/mcp` needs no sign-in and gives 10 free lookups a day. `https://enrich.chat/mcp/oauth` signs you in with your Enrich.chat account over OAuth, and the app then uses your plan's credits. You disconnect it in the dashboard at `/app/#/agent`. In Claude Code, one command adds it:

```
claude mcp add --transport http enrich https://enrich.chat/mcp/oauth
```

```text
Use www.enrich.chat to build a lead list: count IT directors at US hospitals with 1,000+ employees who have a work email, show me the first 25 with name, title and company, and tell me how many credits it would take to reveal their emails.
```

The [MCP server](https://enrich.chat/features/mcp-server/) and [install](https://enrich.chat/install/) pages show the setup for each app, and [AI lead search](https://enrich.chat/features/ai-lead-search/) has more prompts.

## How do you keep a lead list clean and lawful?

Read each status, skip people you already hold, honor opt-outs and refresh before every campaign.

- **Read the status.** Each work email comes back `verified`, `catch_all` or `unknown`, and each mobile has a line type of `mobile` or `unknown`. Treat every contact as a strong lead, not a guarantee, and read our guide to [email bounce rates](https://enrich.chat/blog/email-bounce-rate/) before a big send.
- **Skip people you already have.** In HubSpot, import with "Create new records only" and [existing records in the file are ignored](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/import-and-export/import-objects). In the search, add your customers' websites to "Leave these out".
- **Use the do-not-contact list.** Add emails, company websites or LinkedIn profiles. Your whole team shares the list, and list exports and background jobs leave those people out. Anyone who opted out at [enrich.chat/opt-out](https://enrich.chat/opt-out/) is left out of every result.
- **Follow the sending rules.** The FTC says [CAN-SPAM makes no exception for business-to-business email](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/can-spam-act-compliance-guide-business) and requires you to honor an opt-out within 10 business days. The ICO says a [work address can be personal data](https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/direct-marketing-and-privacy-and-electronic-communications/business-to-business-marketing/). Google tells senders not to [purchase email addresses from other companies](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/81126?hl=en).
- **Refresh before each campaign.** People change jobs: the BLS reports that [20.6% of US wage and salary workers had a year or less](https://www.bls.gov/news.release/tenure.nr0.htm) with their employer in January 2026. Run your saved search again and reveal only the new people.

This is not legal advice. Our guide to [buying email lists](https://enrich.chat/blog/buying-email-lists/) covers the risks of bought lists.

## What can you not do with lists on Enrich.chat?

Lists are a working tool, not a full sales platform, so here are the gaps. For account-based lists, see [ABM lead lists](https://enrich.chat/use-cases/abm-lead-lists/).

- A search returns at most 1,000 results. To go deeper, narrow the filters, for example one state or one size band per search.
- There is no SSO and there are no per-person credit limits. A team shares lists and the owner's credits, but you cannot cap what each member spends.
- Enrich.chat does not send email, run sequences or sync to a CRM. Export the file to your sending tool or CRM, and use [CRM enrichment](https://enrich.chat/use-cases/crm-enrichment/) to update records.
- It does not track people or send alerts. A saved search runs again only when you press Run.
- Company lookups take a website, not a company name, and revenue is a band, not an exact figure.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I build a lead list for free?

Use the free tier. Counts cost nothing, and on the free tier (10 lookups a day) one search uses one lookup however many people it shows. Describe your buyer in people search, read the count and view a page of results. Each email you reveal uses one more lookup, so a big list needs a plan. For a preview without signing in, try the [free lead list builder](https://enrich.chat/tools/lead-list-builder/).

### What is a B2B lead list?

A B2B lead list is a set of people at companies that match your ideal customer profile, with the details you need to reach them, such as name, title, company and a work email. A good list is narrow: one buyer type, one kind of company and one place. Enrich.chat builds it from filters, then reveals emails and mobiles for the people you keep.

### How many results can one search return?

A search returns 25 people per page and can be paged 40 times, so you can reach up to 1,000 results. To go deeper, narrow the filters, for example by state or company size. The dashboard can export up to 1,000 results per search as CSV or XLSX. The free count still tells you how many people match in all.

### Can I export a lead list to HubSpot or Salesforce?

Yes, as a CSV or XLSX file. Export the list from the dashboard, then import it with HubSpot's importer or the Salesforce Data Import Wizard. There is no native CRM app and no CRM sync. In HubSpot, choose Create new records only to skip people you already hold. Add your do-not-contact list first, because list exports leave those people out. See [CRM enrichment](https://enrich.chat/use-cases/crm-enrichment/).

### How much does it cost to build a lead list?

Counts are free. On a plan, each person shown uses 5 credits, each email revealed 10 and each mobile 250. A 500-person list with an email for each uses at most 7,500 credits, which fits the Growth plan at $29 a month. Anything not found uses 0 credits. On a team, the plan owner's credits pay for everyone.

### Is it legal to email a B2B lead list?

Often yes, but rules still apply. The FTC says [CAN-SPAM has no exception for business email](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/can-spam-act-compliance-guide-business), so you need a clear opt-out and must honor requests within 10 business days. In the UK, the ICO says UK GDPR can still apply to a work address. Check the rules where your recipients live. This is not legal advice.
